...why are they?
Reflection/thoughts
· Explore the digital trace/footprint but in a physical sense
· When an image becomes viral or is unleashed into the digital world and crosses the threshold from existing physically in the world it enters an intangible space.
· What happens when something doesn’t go viral but its left the hand of the creator or owner?
· Exists somewhere in between, we can’t see or touch it but it’s there
· What happens when we consider the non-image that is situated in an intangible space…?
· Physically map out the journey of an image in real world in attempt to make it viral
· What happens when you take away the online, images now become viral because it’s so easy and because of the internet à explore that in the real world
· Experiment – to see if my image could go viral offline
· DISCOVERED- that my work became a depiction of failed virality
· Once effort and time are involved, and particularised interests and relevance, people aren’t so keen anymore to share it or even acknowledge it
· By removing that convenience, and by involving effort, my image failed to circulate, and the process ceased to repeat itself.
· PROCESS : send out a series of letters to mimic online behaviour of chain mail or posting something to a social network
· 13 address, all different locations of Sydney, postage stamp included (free for recipient)
· letter inside
· IMAGE? More focused on the process, this physical trace and journey, so I decided to consider the NON-IMAGE à the idea of something that has gone viral and its reach is more focused on than what
· For me this non- image exists nowhere, because first and foremost you cannot see it, yet it exists within the space of the envelope.
· Considered envelope as vessel, transporting this non-image, this enclosed space
· But between A and B the envelope travels through time and space, and once it enters someones home it kind of crosses from public into private
· My aim was for these letters to be returned to confirm that someone else out there has received the letter. Also, in returning the letter, it must have meant that someone had to open it, and therefore this transferring of space from my private environment into theirs.
· FAILURE – it failed to spread and circulate because people get lazy. Convenience is a large factor. Viral images are able to spread with such ease because technology has enabled it to be.
· My making the process physical I got to decide who received the letter…to an extent. I don’t know if they got lost in the mail, in the age of the internet, when an image leaves your hand, anyone and everyone can see it, is it even yours anymore?
· With my work, once I posted the letters the decision became the recipient’s. They now owned the letter, and if they wished to open, discard, send back, forward the letter, that was up to them.
Everything we post/present online has a digital trace yet this trace is unseeable to the human eye. Instead, it exists in this intangible space that we have come to accept as “online”- a place (perhaps) that sits in between the public and private yet simultaneously merges the two realms.
Letters on fishing line Suspended in time and space Blank Where are they from and where are they going? Are they going anywhere?
this perpetual annoying sound of the printer during my process before and after sending the letters out
Mailbox and mail man but where are my letters
I see you mr mailman
So simple yet carries a lot of depth...the indexicality of the filmic medium.
This work by Broomberg and Chanarin touches on this idea of ‘passing through’ spaces and time.
Properties of photographic paper and the very process of transporting such a basic material - allowing its journey to collect information.
