I short stop motion piece we were briefed to create. The aim of the stop motion piece was to bring a second had book to life.
This is my week 9 poster relay in response to Emily's "Curious chicken"
Poster relay week 8
Response to Emily's "The Iron Duke" wasn't very inspired initially at first because i couldn't make any obvious links to the name of the pub other than the duke of wellington which was my previous response. Being from Somerset i decided to do a hand rendered replication of my favourite cider's logo.
Relay Week 7
My response to Billy’s relay of the Duke of Wellington, after some background research I found out he was known as the Iron Duke in his old age because he put iron shutters on his house to block out angry citizens. I thought “The Iron Duke” sounded like a really typical British pub name so I have created a water colour painting of the outside of a pub called The Iron Duke.
Relay Week 6
This is my response to Emily's fools gold pirate charters. i decide to respond with a charter of my own, i decided to take the parrot from Emily's response and and expand from that.
Relay Response Week 5
In response to Billy’s piece containing the words ‘fools gold’.
I did research into where the saying ‘fools gold’ actually comes from, and it is the name given to the mineral iron pyrite or iron disulfide. When people first discovered gold in the earth, iron pyrites were commonly mistaken for real gold due to their golden colouring, unfortunately worth a lot less.
I thought the word pyrite looks and sounds too similar to pirate to ignore, thus I transformed some little fool’s gold nuggets into pirates. I added the type to be clear on what the meaning behind the piece was, i decided to use a font similar to the font used for the film “Pirates of the Caribbean” as it is highly recognized and associated with pirates around the world.
Relay Week 7
This is a response to a photography Emily produced. The image was of a wellington covered in pictures of beef to represent the dish 'beef wellington'. from this i did research where the french dish beef wellington originates from. i discovered the rumours are it was named after the first duke of wellington, i found i portrait of the first duke and created an illustrated version with a piece of hand rendered type.
Interim Brief: Select your favourite film and create a visual synopsis.
As an interim task we got briefed to "Select your favourite film and create a visual synopsis of it", the film i chose was Fear and Loathing it's a film based on an article writen by Hunter S Thompson based on events he experienced. Johnny Depp playing the role of Hunter.
This is one of the 12 scenes in my original synopsis, i decided to take this scene re-illustrate and present it on it's own. i plan to do this with other select scenes that have contrasting vibes and emotions to display.
Relay response week 4
Emily had produced a poster with cows but out of paper in a repeated pattern with one cow breaking this. i decide to research mass cattle farming, the supply of meat and any recent media coverage for inspiration.
i came across the recent horse meat scandal and i thought this would be a good base, i produced a logo with the phrase '100% Beef'. I mainly looked at signage for the style i have chosen specifically American fast food and typographic signage.
Notes: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES WEEK 2
WHAT IS VISUAL CULTURE?
Visual culture is the connection between advertisements and how they come across to a particular audience. i.e Old Spice shower gel - original advert is aimed at adults, then to have Puss in Boots recreate, even though its originally from a film aimed at children, this advert was aimed at adults still because they understand the connection between the two.
It combines cultural, historical, political, psychological, and philosophical and other critical frame works to make sense of contemporary.
Due to time restrictions you will receive a largely Eurocentric account of visual culture. - NOT because other cultures are inferior or unimportant. As researchers you should be aware of the position ally of the authors of the texts that you encounter. Writers are not disinterested, objective viewers, they are uncultured and positioned We all have a position and that position is not neutral. We are sophisticated readers of cultural ‘texts’
‘text’ does not literally mean text.
ASSESSMENT: We will need to make a poster (250 words) We will need to write an essay (1200 words) We will also need preparatory/supporting work from blog.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESEARCH:
Primary - new, unmediated date/information. This is information taken straight from the source as it were. i.e through surveys, questionnaires, one-to-one interviews, trials, subject, observation tests etc. Primary research can be used to collect two types of data, qualitative and quantitative data.
Secondary - information that has already been gathered and interpreted by someone else for a purpose of their own. This can also be used to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Remember information gathered via secondary research is ‘mediated’
Preparation task - this task is intended to start familiarising you with your chosen field via current and reliable secondary research. Located and peruse periodical (I.e journals, industry magazine etc) real vent to your area of interest. Visit seminar preparation task on blackboard. Identify 3 contemporary practitioners whos work attracts, interests, intrigues or otherwise engages you. Identify the following information about them: Name Nationality Where they work Medium/media they work in Subjects Who is their audience?
Notes: CRITICAL PERSPECTIVES WEEK 1
Connection - what something may suggest, i.e “romance” (straight) is described as “normal” - many cultural references within music etc.
Connotation - what is actually there, I.e Talk Talk advert - music, spaceman, ballerina and house.
All visual images show existing ideas and morals about the world, although these are contested, I.e we do not all agree.
Meanings are produced through a social relationship, which includes how viewers interpret.
Euro Centrism - putting European concerns at the centre of our view. i.e whatever political view you (I) start with, impacts your design. Relationship between design and power.
Europeans were at the forefront of discovering new countries. Maps were designed showing European countries to appear to be larger than they actually were, Greenland to be bigger than Africa showing they see they have power.
Why is north always at the top?
Is the hemisphere at the top more superior?
Apollo 17 captured a photo of the earth upside down but as this is not how we know the world, someone decided that the picture should be turned upside down to show how we do view the world.
Ideology - Beliefs and values that act as a basis for an idea.
Karl Marx (key name to remember) Writing in the 19th century during the rise of capitalism and industrialism.
Ideology of the youth - naturalization of values. Societies mask their ideologies as natural systems of value/beliefs.
French Algerian Marxist philosopher working in late 1960’s. Importance of family, media, religion and education in promising values. No outside to ideology. We are hailed as subjects.
Cultural appropriation - using juxtaposition to create critical distance. Combining two distinct visual languages to make difference in the way we interpret them. i.e Jamie Reid for Sex Pistols. (the queens face)
Conclusions: Interpretation is subjective, guided by the audience and context.
initial ideas ideas for week 4 poster relay
Week 3 poster response to Emils Logos. She produced 2 logos that represented fractions showing pounds over passions so i produced this poster with the phrase Fools Gold.
