–George Lucas and the Cult of Darth Vader (x) “And how he confused possessive love with compassionate love” really reminds me of the way George talks about Anakin’s fall in other places:

That it’s not that love is bad, because compassion/compassionate love is central to a Jedi’s life, because you’re allowed to love people, but Anakin loves too much.  And he loves in a possessive, greedy way that’s not balanced.  He made those emotional connections too strongly for someone with such tremendous powers and confused what precisely that love meant–he got attached to things, he can’t let go of his mother, he can’t let go of his girlfriend, he can’t let go of things. And George has always made it clear that love is good, but that attachment–the inability to accept things as they are, like when it’s time to let go–in that sense is possessive and greedy and is at the heart of Anakin’s fall.  He has all this tremendous power and it’s not enough, he wants more power, he wants to possess the people he loves instead of being compassionate towards them, and he can’t let go when he loses them, he just digs everything deeper into his heart and gets all the more greedy.  Not for things, but for people–but that’s just as much a path to the dark side as anything.
