Pause! Time eats away at the soul.
The blackmarketplaylists project, which I run 100% on my own, needs a break. It has simply become too much over time. Too many emails, too many messages, too much fakery, too much technology, too much of everything.
The love of music, the thing that should be at the heart of all this, keeps falling by the wayside more and more.
Somewhere along the way it stopped being about hand-curating: searching, digging and finding great music myself. These days I spend almost all of my time answering emails and messages across every social platform. I've always tried to reply to each one personally, and that is exactly what drains me. Real discovery and the joy of it are what get lost.
I've grown tired. Tired of Spotify and other streaming platforms, tired of social media and its algorithmic nonsense, tired of PR agencies that make it far too easy for themselves, tired of endless submissions of music that is nowhere near a fit for any of my playlists, tired of AI fakes, tired of the cost of tools that I carry alone (and that leave me out of pocket every month, despite the digital beers so many of you have kindly bought me). Just tired.
Because it's not the music I curate that's the problem. It almost never is. It's the whole apparatus around it.
The beauty of great under-the-radar bands, the thing that started all of this, is something I can barely feel anymore, buried under constant new hurdles and problems. But that should be the whole point.
The playlists stay online and will still be updated, just more sparingly and at my own pace.
So for now, I'm pulling the plug. I don't know how long this break will last. And I don't know what comes after it. Only that something has to change.
Thank you for understanding. And thank you to everyone who has been part of this along the way.
Thomas
P.S. Submissions are closed for now, on the website too.
Hand-curated Spotify playlists — supporting underground bands. No bots. No AI.
So this finally happened: the blackmarket playlists app is out now on Google Play. 90+ hand-curated playlists - shoegaze, dreampop, indie rock, punk and more - sorted by genre, country, and theme. No algorithm deciding what you hear, no ads, no data collection. Just playlists made by an actual human who spends way too much time digging for music. If you're in a band: you can submit your tracks directly through the app. If you're a listener: this is for finding the stuff Spotify's algorithm will never show you. It's completely free and independent. Search "blackmarket playlists" on Google Play or grab the link on blackmarketplaylists.de

Setting the Stage: My New Signature Intro by Shades of Violette Every great journey needs a starting point, and for blackmarketplaylists.de, that moment has finally arrived. I am beyond excited to introduce my official new playlist intro: a piece of music that perfectly captures the soul of what we do here.
A Collaboration Across Borders Released in May 2026, this intro is the result of a wonderful collaboration with Melanie and Jeremy from the incredibly talented band Shades of Violette, based in Washington, D.C.
When I reached out to them, I was looking for something that could represent the diversity of the "under the radar" scene. What they delivered exceeded all expectations. They’ve managed to craft a multifaceted atmosphere that bridges the gap between different worlds in just a few moments.
The Sound: Dreamy, Gazey, and Pure Post-Punk Technically and artistically, the track is a masterclass in atmosphere. It seamlessly weaves together:
• Dreamy Textures: Setting a reflective, immersive mood.
• Gazey Elements: Providing that signature wall of sound we love.
• Post-Punk Energy: Adding a rhythmic edge that keeps the listener engaged.
All of this is tied together by Melanie’s captivating voice. Her unique timbre and the way she carries the melody provide the perfect emotional "hook" that makes you want to stay for the rest of the playlist.
Why it Matters At blackmarketplaylists.de, everything is hand-curated. There are no bots, no algorithms, just a deep-rooted passion for music that deserves to be heard. This intro is a testament to that philosophy: a real connection between a curator and a band, creating something new to support the independent music scene.
From now on, you’ll find this track at the beginning of every playlist. It’s my way of saying: "Welcome. Sit back, and discover your new favorite band."
A massive thank you to Melanie and Jeremy for their incredible work. Let’s go and enjoy!
