Woman standing in a field, ca. 1910
With a wealthy, successful husband, a magnificent Park Avenue apartment, a Benz limousine, three healthy children, two servants, and a chauffeur, Edith was doing pretty well for herself by 1923. Released by her servants from having to bother with household chores, and indulged by an adoring husband and overattentive mother, she could devote herself to the two activities she had always been interested in – the cultivation of her appearance and her voice.

Mustachioed Man on Bicycle - Cabinet Card from Constantinople by Beverly Via Flickr: A dapper man in a pin striped suit and cap balances on a bicycle in this cabinet card from the Parnasse studio in Constantinople. I was impressed with his ability to keep the bicycle upright with no brace until I examined it at high magnification. It is clear from the cross hatched retouching that there was a brace under his right hand and behind his right leg.
