indiana + clothing.
to say indiana’s attire is . . . stuffy, would be an understatement. often clad in layers of varying shades of brown, indiana often looks more like his father, & less like a teenager. he dresses like a mini academic - which, really, isn’t too surprising.
teenagers as we know them today, with their own fashion senses & styles, didn’t really exist until the subcultures of the 1950s. up until then, teenagers usually dressed the same as adults, & indiana - accompanying his father on many a lecture circuit - dresses just like henry walton jones, senior. tweed jackets, sweaters, ties, shirts with cuffs buttoned - he always looks well - presented ( has to, of course, with the circles they seem to move in ). however, he never misses a chance to make an outfit his own. whether it’s the addition of the hopi woven belt to his scouting uniform, or mismatched socks under polished red wings or alden boots, there always that little bit of individuality ; that small act of rebellion.
surprisingly, or perhaps merely due to constant practice, indiana can move rather easily & swiftly in his many layers. when he doesn’t have to be dressed up, however, his outfit of choices is a button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, trousers, & his boots — ease of movement without sacrificing style. woollen cardigans may also be worn - but not when he’s out adventuring.
his later adoption of fedora‘s style of dress - combined with his professorial dress sense - implies an insecurity as to who he really is : a boy adventurer, or a budding academic ? ( we know from the previous films, & the rest of crusade that this is something indiana never really comes to terms with, & he constantly flirts between both worlds, though he seems far more comfortable in one than the other ). as far as i can tell, fedora's leather jacket in 1912 is rather anachronistic - the jacket has its roots in the world wars, & then was marketed as a fashion item in the late 1920s. whilst, canonically, both of these suit adult indiana, they don’t quite explain why or how fedora, in 1912, was wearing one. however, i don’t really care, as indiana doesn’t completely adopt fedora's dress sense until he’s a little older. he does however adopt the bullwhip pretty quickly after the encounter with the lion, & can often be found wearing the fedora that was gifted to him. the leather jacket is a wwi edition ; i don’t care what the you.ng indi.ana jon.es chronicles have to say on the matter, quite frankly.
in any other non-canon timeline verse, indiana’s outfits are . . . pretty much the same. a well-polished mini-professor with a rebellious streak, he adopts the jacket & fedora earlier than in canon, but his main attire is still button down shirt, trousers, & boots — jeans are something indiana very rarely wears, as he finds them more constricting rather than anything else. he fits very neatly into the ‘ dark aca.demia ’ aesthetic.
please bring him home to ur mother ,,, they’ll love him & how nicely he dresses, i promise.
