November 16th Outreach Report

Goal: Provide 40 burritos to West Seattle Mutual Aid Party for Saturday outreach. 20 bean, rice, cheese, 20 with added chicken. Final Numbers: We made 45 burritos, 20 bean, rice, and cheese, and 25 with chicken. Notes: Organizer Lisa said they were an absolute hit, doubled as hand warmers in the cold, and the chicken were the first to go. We did have a little chicken left over but we ran out of beans early, next time I'll make 3lbs vs 2lbs of black beans. Rice was scant at the end too, so instead of 5 cups I'll make 6 cups for this number of burritos. Secret Santa 2025!

We have spoken with a few other MA group organizers and have decided to host another Secret Santa! If you’d like to play Santa, please shoot me a text or send me an email! I’m looking to pair folks up ASAP, I should have all our lists completed by December 1st, we are asking for a minimum contribution of $75 pre-shipping. 🥰

This last week I was recovering from my second Pfizer dose and wow, that was a doozie. Anyway, here was our menu from last week. Currently cooking for nine households.

This week we:

-Did outreach in Kent, there are 3 new folks down there that have asked to be added to our weekly drops

-Brought a bunch of goodies to The Waystation including: 3 boxes of mixed tampons, 2 packages of pads, toilet paper, Powerade, a smol assortment of groceries, burritos, and a GIANT nine person three room tent gifted to me by a friend (thanks Lynn!)

-Jerky drops to both locations!

-Make enchilada burritos for outreach at SnoHill, also brought instant coffee and creamer

-Cooked and delivered to nine households

We have a new Tupperware helper! Thanks to Vanessa for volunteering to take over cleaning our Tupperware every week. This is usually anywhere from 1-3 loads in my dishwasher, and when I’m already doing the dishes for 3.5 people, plus my big cooking day, all in my tiny apartment, this is a HUGE help. She also very graciously donated two hot beverage dispensers. ❤️❤️

Just an update!

1. The Dollar trees near us have started to carry instant coffee! The brand is quality approved by The Waystation, so I’ve been cleaning out the shops I visit. We’ve donated...a lot so far 😅

2. I had some hand warmers on hand still from Snowpocalypse, and those were donated to another mutual aid volunteer putting together goodie bags for Seattle neighbors.

3. During that trip to the Waystation, we also dropped off approximately 30 boxes of girl scout cookies! I had distributed about 20 boxes personally, and the rest went out for further distribution. We also donated 7 planters for their garden project. ❤️

4. I finished up the financial spreadsheets for the first quarter. Our final numbers are as follow:

January-March expenses: $5,947.64

January-March donations: $5,339.32

That leaves me at a current deficit of $608.32 for the year.

It has been A WEEK. Meal delivery April 4th has been scaled back just a bit, but not shown is that we’ll be delivering Girl Scout cookies!

We are super grateful to receive 50 boxes of assorted cookies from Girl Scout troop #51607, which have been met with GREAT JOY from folks who have received them so far. They are going out with meal deliveries, some of them have been distributed to my Kent peeps, and the rest will be going to Seattle for distribution at camps.

We’ll also be delivering/have delivered:

-3 shirts and a pack of socks to Kent

-small bag of dog food and treats to Kent

-Kent Crew outreach packs

-Jerky to location A

-7 planters to The Waystation for their garden project

-13 canisters of instant coffee

-17 boxes of instant coffee (6 sticks per box)

-4 small bottles of shelf stable creamer

-1.5 dozen wool blend socks for outreach packs

Hello nerds,

It’s been a long few weeks. Seattle got a ton of snow which meant super urgent outreach for snow prep, then being stuck inside for a while.

We skipped two weeks of deliveries, one for snow and one for a scheduled “vacation”, but besides that, passed out around 350 pairs of socks, 20lbs of beef jerky, $300 worth of hand warmers, about half a dozen jackets, multiple pairs of boots, $100 worth of blankets and fuel, managed to score about $400 worth of instant coffee for less than $30, and did outreach in the snow, in the dark.

Financial update: I’ve still got to upload two smallish receipts and order gloves, and were currently $102.51 in the negative for February and finished off January $241.55 in the negative. I’m posting ongoing and one off needs in the following post.

What did we do this week?

It was a long week and I’m struggling to remember. I’ll probably update this as I remember stuff!

Delivered weekly meals

Visited the Beacon Hill Community Fridge for firewood and foodstuff for Secret Garden (thanks Nikki!)

Delivered socks, gloves, and water I had previously collected to SnoHill

Made breakfast burritos to go with the hand sanitizer and nitrile gloves donated to SnoHill for outreach

Distributed so much to Secret Garden: 6 blankets, 2 pairs of boots (4 more pairs are incoming), a tarp, a case of bottled water, a bunch of firewood, and some food

Took requests for Secret Garden: size 8 women’s waterproof boots, more leggings and pants (2XL), a 2X women’s jacket (water resistant), more sweets/donuts, more firewood

Ordered socks!

Finished updating the financial spreadsheet for January 2021 (we finished at -$241.55)

Became a MOD for HOCS, which will be an ongoing responsibility going forward. I’ll be updating posting guidelines and working primarily in forum and comment moderation.

HUGE thank you to Traci for the brand new wagon. This is going to make outreach to Secret Garden considerably easier. I also plan to use it for my giant soup pot and other outreach projects.

Big thanks to everyone who contributed money and physical donations as well. Monetary contributions were $1,926.25 for January. Expenses were $2,167.80

Wool Sock Bulk Buy!

In this episode of “wtf is Kas doing this week?” we have... Buying a shit ton of wool blend socks. These socks typically retail from $4 a pair (in bulk on Amazon) to $12/pair when purchased individually. Socks are something that are ALWAYS needed, even more so in winter when things take forever to dry and trench foot is around the corner.  Using my superpowers of sourcing for good, I’ve found a wholesale distributor, and between leveraging my resale permit, buying in bulk, and using a new account discount code, I’m able to get 144 pairs for $190.47, including shipping. That works out to $1.32 a pair for wool/cotton blend thermal socks. For locals, I’ve posted details in HOCS and SQE for transparency.  If you are part of a mutual aid organization or do outreach with your local unhoused neighbors (in Seattle area) and would like to participate, let me know. We’ve got some funding to cover folks who can’t afford to purchase. If you’d like to contribute to the sock fund, please venmo @kulispel and leave “socks” in the note.
