I think the problem with a lot of “feminist” classical retellings that makes them fail at being feminist is that they’re villainizing the wrong characters.

Stop holding the gods to human standards. They’re not human. That is quite literally the point of MULTIPLE Euripides plays. Go after the heroes.

But go after the RIGHT heroes. Why are we vilifying Hector, arguably one of the least problematic heroes, in stories where Achilles and Agamemnon exist? Why is Paris exempt from criticism, but Menelaus is the epitome of evil? (That part is also aimed at Euripides, I love The Trojan Women but holy shit you did him dirty my guy.) Why are we not being MORE hateful towards Jason? Why are we continuing to make Medea the villain?

Why are we making shit up about Romeo to give Juliet her “feminist freedom arc” that she ALREADY HAS IN THE PLAY? Paris is RIGHT THERE, go rip HIM to shreds. And on the opposite spectrum of that, why don’t we NAME everyone who wronged Ophelia instead of sanitizing her to the point where she’s a completely different character, and in the end, oppressing her just like everyone else in the play?

A lot of this also boils down to the refusal to accept women and feminine characters as flawed, as well as the refusal to acknowledge that, in order to uphold these false narratives, you have to completely destroy characters who aren’t traditionally masculine or feminine, but clearly we’re not ready for that conversation yet.

YES YES YES EXACTLY and i was gonna talk about Rosaline in my original post but changed my mind SO I’M GONNA TALK ABOUT IT NOW.

Rosaline is one of my guilty pleasure movies, but oh my god does it fail at being a feminist retelling. Why is a movie not about Juliet still perpetuating unjust Romeo slander? I get that the point of it is that it’s a speculative narrative where Rosaline and Romeo were dating, and me complaining about that is like getting mad at erotica for being smutty or horror for being political, but keeping her a nun and barely associating her with Romeo at all would have made for SUCH an interesting story? But then that would require her arc to not revolve around men, and for the movie to not have an aggressive bias against the wrong characters.

But that would be too nuanced for modern audiences, because it would force them to accept that Romeo and Juliet is already a very feminist story. Because apparently it’s difficult to accept Juliet gaining autonomy through her choice to marry Romeo (who himself may have social autonomy, but is so restricted by his devotion to higher powers that he doesn’t think he has free will) is in itself a feminist concept. So the concept of a movie about a nun who WANTS to be a nun, whose story doesn’t revolve around men whatsoever, could have been a much more feminist concept than what we got. Rosaline could have been about Rosaline witnessing the events of the play and questioning her faith, because why would God allow so much death and destruction? It could have been about her encouraging Juliet to marry Romeo. It could have had a scene where she assures Romeo that he doesn’t have to be so heavily influenced by the stars and his dreams.

And Lady Macbeth, oh my god. She spends the whole play acting as the devil on Macbeth’s shoulder and walking him like a dog. She could rule the entire universe as a tyrannical queen if she so desired. But, again, modern audiences only focus on the scene where she’s trying to wash the blood from her hands, because it’s much easier to sympathize with a woman in pain or a woman who regrets her actions than one who is a bad person.

People struggle to empathize with Lady Macbeth for same reason why they struggle to empathize with Hamlet, or Ophelia, or Romeo, or Tybalt, or Constance, or Medea, or Helen (the list goes on and on), and the same reason why—what I am willing to bet are the same—people struggle to care about mental illness, chronic illness, grief, and suffering when it no longer looks pretty: because it’s no longer perfect and socially acceptable, and that makes them uncomfortable. Yes, it is that deep.

I think most stories could benefit from having two characters whose relationship is just "those two guys" (gender neutral). Most of the time if you look for one of them you'll find both of them. They can hate each other or be the best of friends or something in-between but they just can't find that same spark with anyone else. Their relationship is best described as "do not separate them". They are fully fleshed out characters individually but if either of them are left alone without the other for any reason it feels so wrong.
