Boethius, De musica (c.1120-1150)

Among the medieval manuscripts in the Turnbull Library is this 12th century treatise on music which contains the works of two authors: Boethius and Guido of Arezzo. The illustration above includes three medieval stringed instruments, the three arcs above them demonstrating the musical intervals which make up the three types of tetrachord or 4th in the Greek musical system. 

diatonic = semitone-tone-tone 

chromatic = semitone-semitone-minor 3rd 

enharmonic = quartertone-quartertone-major 3rd.
