US to review Boeing 787, but calls it safe

The U.S. government stepped in Friday to assure Americans that Boeing’s new 787 “Dreamliner” is safe to fly, even as it launched a comprehensive review to find out what caused a fire, a fuel leak and other worrisome incidents this week.

Despite the incidents, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood declared, “I believe this plane is safe, and I would have absolutely no reservations about boarding one of these planes and taking a flight.”

Administrator Michael Huerta of the Federal Aviation Administration said his agency has seen no data suggesting the plane isn’t safe but wanted the review to find out why safety-related incidents were occurring.

New restaurant pops up in Des Moines

A brand new restaurant has popped up for a limited time in Des Moines.

"It's January, there's not much else to do, (so) let's put on our eating clothes and go eat some down-home Southern food," said Chris Diebel, co-creator of Bubba Southern Comfort. "A concept like a pop-up restaurant really helps break up the monotony of winter."

Offering a taste of Southern comfort, Bubba Southern Comfort is inside Hoyt Sherman Place only until Sunday.

"We've had to literally, from scratch, create a front-of-house staff, a back-of-house staff. We've had to do decor, we've had to do branding work. It's been a long road," Diebel said.

"I think it's a great opportunity to have a very specialized meal, (where) anything can happen. It's like a live show, so it's very exciting to see how he's presenting everything," said guest Angela Bohnenkamp.

Hennepin County taxpayers on track to pay ballpark off early

Target Field debt is being retired at a clip faster than originally thought. Unlike the home team, Hennepin County's financing plan for Target Field is exceeding expectations.

Taking advantage of a stable revenue stream and low interest rates, the county has prepaid $31.3 million of variable-rate debt on the downtown ballpark, including an $11.4 million payment made earlier this month.

"The bottom line is promises made, promises kept," Minnesota Ballpark Authority executive director Dan Kenney said Friday. "We said this deal would work, and it has."

The excess payments made so far will save the county $53.7 million in interest expenses.

Mesa teacher brings goodwill as 'pilgrim' to Newtown

Mesa special-education teacher Faith Leonard talked it over with her husband the weekend after 20 children and six educators were shot dead by an intruder at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The answer was an unequivocal yes.

Instead of driving to Iowa to visit family over her winter break, Leonard would drive across the country to bring toys, treats, donations and cheer to mourners in Newtown, Conn. “As I teacher, I was just sick about what had happened,” said Leonard, 30, who has taught autistic sixth-graders at Barbara Bush Elementary School in Mesa for nine years.

“For teachers, schoolchildren are our love. They are the ones we protect. I have heard the expression ‘Don’t get sad, get busy.’ I felt moved to help.”

The following Monday, Leonard sent an e-mail about her plans to co-workers at Barbara Bush, as well as to Mesa’s Zaharis Elementary and Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary in the Ahwatukee Foothills area of Phoenix, where her husband, Dave, is a teacher. Read more.....

A former aide to Gov. Beverly Perdue pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor obstruction of justice charge in connection with secret salary payments she received while working on the Democrat's 2008 campaign.

Julia Leigh Sitton was sentenced to 45 days in jail, which was suspended to 12 months on unsupervised probation. Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens also ordered her to pay a $5,000 fine and barred her from working for or raising money for political campaigns or groups while on probation.
