Brussels even only for one night was great. Our apartment was 10 times larger than our one in Paris and it was right in the city centre just around the corner from Grand Place. We arrived and heading out to find a beer and dinner. We walked around the corner and found two great looking bars selling many Belgian beers (of course!) We ordered dinner and drinks (I had un vin rouge and it was only 2.50 euro for a glass!) at a bar that seemed popular but had a bit of strange vibe. Later on that night, after meeting a Belgian guy named Stefan, he told us that it was a gay bar that we had been at and that’s why we were getting funny looks! It was a hilarious realisation and it all now made sense. Either way the food and wine was good.
We then moved on to a different bar which was far friendlier and sat and talked for hours with Stefan. Stefan overheard us discussing the correct pronunciation on Maastricht (I think he was probably having a bit of a chuckle to himself!) He was a great person to accidentally meet while in Brussels. He told us all about the city and the story with the different languages and about Antwerp, where he was from. We discussed politics and he even knew about the flag changes in New Zealand. Meeting locals always adds a little bit more to your time in a city.
So far we have been in five countries in 10 days. We found getting into each country very odd. No one seems to even want to see your passport. I was slight disappointed as this means you don’t get your passports stamped.
Next stop – The Netherlands!

We had an amazing time in Paris. So many sights, smells and tastes, too many to take in in one short trip. The metro is especially interesting. We managed to nail it within a day. It’s easy, fast and cheap once you understand the lines, stations and how to get to each platform. It can get a little hot, smelly and crowded but it’s so easy to get where you needs to go (as long as you have Google maps.) I think the only downside of taking the Metro is that you are underground therefore don’t get to see your journey from place to place.
Everything in the city is expensive, but we knew that before we arrived and we prepared for the prices. We had one night where I paid 25 Euro for three beers, I almost fell over. It was 2am and as well as ‘Happy Hour’ (usually from around 5pm-10pm) in some bars they also have ‘Club Hour’ (2am until 5am), where they hike the prices up.
One thing I will miss in Paris is the price for really amazing cheese and wine. You can but a great bottle of vin rouge (red wine) and delicious fromage (cheese) for under 3 euro each. That was many of my evenings sorted!
I got very good at ordering our breakfast at the Boulangerie just down from our apartment – “trois croissant et un pain et chocolat, si vou plait.” I am a little sick of croissants if i’m honest… Marmite on toast wouldn’t go a stray right now!
I turned 23 in Paris. It was a brilliantly sunny day with a perfect temperature high of around 25. We started with a huge breakfast with Bertrand at a creperie around the corner from the apartment. When I say huge, I mean a three course breakfast… you start with bread, cheeses and orange juice, then crepes with ham and eggs with a hot drink and then sweet crepes to finish off. That did us until well after lunch!
We said goodbye to Bert as he had to head to work and met up with Josh’s friend Van, who has been living in Paris for almost five months. We wandered around the area he lives in which is by the canals and then went for coffee. Afterward we caught the metro to Montmartre and meet up with Lola.
Van and Lola were our tour guides for the afternoon. We walked right up to the Sacre Coeur in Montmartre and looked out over the city. A spectacular view. By the time we walked back down, Josh and I were peckish and ordered a burger at Quick, a Belgian fast-food joint very similar to McDonalds or Burger King (not great, but filled the gap.) We then just wandered the streets for hours. Van left us and we found a bar and had a cocktail and waited for a few other friends to join us.
Dinner was my favourite part of my day. We went to a place called Chartier which is known for good, authentic french cuisine that is very affordable. The whole experience was just great. I had foie-gras and bread as a starter, duck and potatoes as my main and what was like a giant profiterole with cream from dessert. Three bottles of vin rouge later (between seven) we were very satisfied!
Our last day and night in Paris was great. We got to visit Van one last time as his work (a coffee shop called Cafe Kitsune) then headed over to where Lola was staying. She made us lunch and we caught the Metro to a rad bar called La Javelle which sits on the Seine. It had an amazing vibe, all outside with fairy lights and missed matched furniture. We ordered beers, sat down and a guy called Kevin Davy White started playing covers. AMAZING. Soulful, deep voice like Ray Charles.
Before I left I was told by maybe people that seven days was too long to stay in Paris, but I couldn’t disagree more. I could have stayed for another few weeks. The city is so large and so dense that after seven days we hadn’t even scratched the surface. I look forward to heading back in the next few years and spending more time there.

The city welcomed us with rain and humidity – very much like home. Our apartment couldn’t be smaller if it tired! I has been fine for us, but we haven’t spent much time there.
The first evening in Paris we wandered around our district and meet Bertrand in a bar. It was amazing to him, I’d missed him a lot since he left our flat in Auckland a few months ago. Bert introduced us to friends of his and we drank beer and talked for hours.
The next day we slept off the hangover and the jet lag. It took me a few days for my body clock to adjust, but I got there. When we eventually got up we meet Eric and Aubrey, who we also meet while they were living in Auckland. The took us for a tour around the Eiffel Tower along with every other tourist.... going here wasn’t on my list of things to do, but glad we did purely for the people watching. You get very good at saying “non merci” because every few minutes there is someone trying to sell you souvenirs or alcohol.
The grounds sounding the tower and nice so we found a supermarket and bought cheese, bread and wine. This became our favourite thing – Apero.
After the apero we heading to a boat party called CONCRETE which is held on the Seine. The people watching was amazing here. No tourists and all Parisians. Everyone was surprisingly friendly and people would just come up and chat to you.
We arrived very early and watched as the dance floor slowed filled up. The guys were the first to start the dance floor, which I found fascinating. These Parisian guys have some serious dance moves that would put Kiwi guys to shame!
Day three in Paris was a walking/shopping/hot kind of day. We walked from our apartment to Notre-Dame. The queues prevented us from going inside, but it’s a stunning sight from outside too.
We keeps wandering and found some cute vintage shops and cafes and spent most of our day walking the streets. The heat go overwhelming so we found a metro station and found a cool shopping mall called Citadium. Althrough Europe is heading into winter so the shops are filled with coats and knits we found a few cool things.
Day four - Another super hot day. I got up early and found a boulangerie and bought us croissants for breakfast. We then spent the day in Musee d’Orsay and now we are sitting in Jardin de Luxenberg having apero and writing postcards back home.

Woke up to this view of our street in Vienna this morning. Sad we don’t have more time here.
Everything about this city has been idyllic (expect for that time Josh left his phone in an Uber but we won’t talk about that…)
Auf Wiedersehen, Vienna. I’ll be back. Tx
