playful sideways glance is thrown at the raven, tugging on his hand as she drags him through the threshold and inside the warmth, dim lights of the tavern. outside the winter is dreary, however, the fire of the hearth and the stench of strong alcohol and food cooking on the stove give an almost coziness to the ambiance.

charlotte is all ruffled petticoats and black stockings, ringlets of pink hair framing her face; gilbert looks the part of the upscale gentleman, attracts a myriad of wenches to his side immediately. she laughs at this, tugs on him closer, “relax. you’ve got a pistol. you’ll be fine.”

“a long time ago, I used to work at places like this during the snowing seasons,” she’s brought him closer to the center of the room, where three men play a lively tune on various strings . around them, men and women dance lively and closely entwined, moving from one spot to another, unlike the luxurious winter balls of the four dukedoms he’s surely used to.

before he can protest, charlotte grabs a hold of his hand, positions it close on the small of her back, “it’s high time you learn to have some fun!” •••

for once, she is not taunting him, despite the obvious advantage she has over him right now. the hatter has been incapacitated, now the only thing left to do is wait for master glen’s orders of what to do with him.

and so, charlotte sits outside the hatter’s cell, blade in hand. what were once the dungeons ‘neath the baskerville manor are now barely crumbling stonewalls and ancient chains. the hatter is displayed on the wall like a trophy, she takes delight in it as much as she can. even so, his words resonate in her ears - how can she tell him something she has no knowledge of? there are nothing but doubts left in her mind.

“sharing any tidbit of information with you is like shooting myself in the foot. It doesn’t matter if you’re to be killed soon,” she draws out the last couple words, tasting the bittersweetness in her tongue - killing you still won’t bring fang back.

“tell me, do you enjoy being the victim for once? it must be the first time in years you’ve got a taste of your own blood,” cynical chuckle accompanies her words, the sharpening of her blade against the wall ceases before she adds, “I intend to keep that eye of yours; wear it around my throat like a necklace.” •••

• sometimes he will mutter these things out of nowhere, in a voice barely above a murmur, his usual tone for orders and greetings and inquires. she ponders about his melancholy more often than not, that uneasy feeling that creeps up whenever he says them will invade her, but she’ll banish it immediately as nonsense.

because, they all agree on one thing: master glen is just.

when she met the bandaged lord with white hair and rotten breath, back on a snowy evening at the clementine, he spoke of his master with irreverence yet endearment; like a father speaks of his wayward son. she was invited to meet him the following night at the manor, alongside two beauties who were sisters. master glen had been courteous, yet avoiding, and had dismissed them back to the carriage with a nod of his head. the old man had laughed , hoarse and gurgling, like it was always part of his plan.

it is an inside joke, he would say to them - I still have this barter with his sister .

charlotte glances up at glen and finds such memories resurfacing , the old lord with the bandages and sickly laughter. she has not seen him for over six months now.

“whether you had been untrue or not, my lord, wouldn’t matter. my loyalty and admiration would not have faltered, either ways,” she smiles, shy, offers a respectful bow, “and you’ve yet to be unkind to me, so I cannot say anything about such a thing.” •

she doesn’t believe in the greater good. she used to, back then, when such a thing did not amount to the slaughter of men and women and kids. perhaps, if master glen were still alive, things would be different - perhaps he’d manage to keep up the illusion for her.

still, she sees the hatter, whose wickedness he wears on himself like a second skin, and as much as she curses his name, he will never pretend to be anything other than this rotten man.

that draws her into his life, into his bed, into this depraved little game they enjoy to play when nobody is looking.

“give a man a weapon, tell him to kill his brother for a bag of gold. he will - just look at the nightrays,” a low, cynical chuckle accompanies her words, “you and I both know that. guess that’s one thing we can finally agree on.” •

a sardonic half-smirk is her retort to his inquiry, followed by a cackle in response to the furious blush on his cheeks. the raven protests that these are not matters to discuss over supper, and lottie must admit, once more, to be having a grand time teasing him over the bashfulness of his reactions.

there’s just something comforting about the raven and his righteousness, like a solid pillar from the baskerville manor that won’t ever falter. and in lonely nights when the ghost of fang’s last words haunt the corners of her mind, that sense of familiar comfort is often welcomed.

“I can’t be the only one in abstinence, though,” in a teasing, singsongy voice, she raises a brow, “you either have a secret lover hidden under your mattress or your balls have begun collecting cobwebs by now.” •

• working at the red stocking, monthly bleeding meant you didn’t work. in the far more lavish ‘clementine’, it also meant you didn’t eat, because the expenses for the room you were renting still needed to be paid for in timely fashion.

but because charlotte has grown accustomed to skipping meals while in this state, and her face grows gaunt despite her breasts looking swollen, eventually, not only the older baskerville women could track her menstrual cycle, so could some of the men - who feigned nonchalance, yet would keep even bigger distance from her than usual.

but jack vessalius has, obviously, an astonishing lack of fear for his physical integrity, and that is surely why he approaches her with his wide, puppy-dog smile, like he knows and teases her for it without even a single care.

legs cross even tighter ‘neath frilly white nightgown, as if trying to contain both the blood from leaking and her temper from cracking “don’t you have a bed of your own, lord vessalius?” with a scoff, charlotte glares at him through the reflection of the large mirror on her boudoir, “or are you just so accustomed to frequenting other women’s mattresses that you seem to have misplaced yours??”

“it is past midnight. the only reason why you’re still alive is master glen’s benevolence,” the blade stuck on the doorframe, barely an inch from his head, like a warning sign, is obvious testimony to that, “in other words: leave while you still have your balls attached.” •
