I finally did it.
After 19 years of watching them on tv, buying their apparel, and supporting them through thick and thin, I made it to my first Detroit Red Wings hockey game. I can’t tell you how excited I was walking up those steps to the Joe Louis Arena. Honestly, this is one of my only “dreams” that I’ve ever had that seemed do-able; to watch the Red Wings play at their home rink. It was quite the expense, especially for a game on New Year’s Eve and against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it was worth it, so worth it. Also, I am proud to say that I no longer have a voice. By 2nd period it was gone; shredded. I wish I could’ve gone to one of their games when the glory team was playing back in 2002. Yzerman, Chelios, Lidstrom, Shannahan, Datsyuk; these guys were the best in the league. Tonight’s game was unusual. Detroit up 2 -0 during the first period. But the game ended with a Pittsburgh win at 5-2. 5 UNANSWERED GOALS?!?! Detroit pulled their goalie out 5 minutes to the end. Penguins made a goal from across the rink. Its a shame. They just weren’t on their usual game. What an amazing team. In all of these years of watching team after team play each other in the NHL, I’ve never seen another team like them. This won’t be the last time I go to see them play, not after tonight’s experience. Detroit is the scummiest city I have ever been in and I will not spend time here on my leisure, but I will come here as many times as I can to watch this team play. Go Red Wings!!!
