At first she wasn’t looking at him, and that fact that she wasn’t made
a rock form in the pit of his stomach. The strain between the two of
them was almost unbearable and he hated it. He only had himself to
blame for that, however, and so really, he just hated himself. Hannah
would be a constant reminder of the friendship he’d fucked up,
leaving him with nothing but ‘what ifs’ and ‘would could’ve beens’
He could tell her that he was sorry a thousand times, and it still
wouldn’t amount to anything.
Then, she was looking at him, and he had to look away. Suddenly
he wished that she wasn’t looking at him. Her gaze felt like daggers
piercing his skin and he hated it. He shifted a tad bit uncomfortably
as her eyes bored into him, and the silence engulfed them. It was
almost suffocating and he wanted to say something, but it was
also stifling and he couldn’t bring himself to speak again.
And then her voice rang out, and cut through to his senses. His
dark eyes lifted to try to meet hers through the flurry, and then
down to the designer bags he’d lugged all the way up here. His
brows knotted together as Emily popped into his head and how
the majority of these bags were all hers and the remember that
she might as well have been cheating on him with Mike is fresh
in his mind again; salt into the wound.
❝Most of those aren’t even mine. They’re Emily’s. I only packed
the essentials. I know how to camp, alright?❞
Maybe he sounded a bit snippy just then, but to be fair, Hannah
wasn’t exactly being overly friendly with him either, and to top it
all off, Emily and Mike hadn’t made things any better.
A light sigh passes his lips, and he brings a hand up to rub the
back of his neck. This wasn’t how he’d wanted their re-encounter
to go. But he also wasn’t sure what he’d even expected.
❝I was talking more about helping you with your knee, but it’s also
fucking freezing out here, and Josh isn’t anywhere around.
Couldn’t hurt to try to find another way in before everyone else
gets here. I don’t feel like standing around and having to listen to
them bitch and moan about being cold either.❞
“ I don’t need your help. “ It’s below a scoff and it passes her lips just as she makes
her own way to pass him -- to the side of the house. “ The basement is this way, “ It’s
an invitation for him to follow and she hopes he does deep down. At least, she needed
this. At least she could pretend they were all fine as much as she hated it. How she
hated that he was carrying Emily’s things for her -- after everything. One thing was
certain; she wasn’t used to being at the other end of Matt’s sharp tone.
She probably deserved it, for her --- no. Regardless, Hannah was DONE apologizing
for these people, no matter what it was. The slight pain in her knee subsided and she
was back lingering around, not exactly knowing where she was going.
“ So.. did you pack warmer clothes?” her back is still turned to him, too busy trying
to find an entryway. She couldn’t wait for whatever the fuck Josh was doing, or want
to stand there while they all pooled in slowly to the cabin. It was so fucking awkward
and she didn’t know why --- he agreed. She glanced over her shoulder, rolling her
eyes almost; she’d asked because she noticed the lack of gloves, hat, winter wear.
Did he really forget?
The tension from before slowly began to roll off her shoulders and she seemed fine
for now; Matt aside from Sam was one of the two people she said she’d AVOID. the
others were just pointless noise that could be easily ignored and she had no problem;
these two? She figured they wanted to talk -- when she didn’t want to. GREAT. So,
why was she alone with him?
All questions she couldn’t answer herself. “ Okay.. so the fucker is locked. So, I’m gonna
need to bust it open with something. or, you could bust it with something..” there’s a pause.
Hannah was still terrified of her father finding out she broke a window, more so Matt
breaking it. “Or you could lift me up to the roof, I’ll climb to my bedroom and get in through
there.” she said it as if it were that easy.
Arms crossed, she took a deep breath and finally turned to him. If you looked real close
you could see a vague apologetic look -- -that was gone as soon as you noticed it’d been
there in the first place. “ We better hurry before the rest of the ‘gang’ shows up.” Sarcasm.
