Final Reflection
It has finally come to an end, time flies by really quickly :(
This communication design studies has covered a broad range of topic and discussions about design that can be applied in different situations. Classes and lectures have been very engaging as well.
I have to say this class has been very enjoyable, from the start all the way to the end. It was overwhelming at first because almost everything was new to me, but thanks to the teachers and friends here have been very supportive and I learned a lot. Being able to see everyone’s progress in tumblr has also been very inspiring.
Hope we can see each other next semester!

Lecture 12
It’s finally the last lecture :(
In this lecture, Andy and Karen went through and revise all the lectures we had before. After revising, they talked about decolonizing design and how we should celebrate all design without looking at race or genders. They proceed to talk about female designers because they’re not as talked about compared to men designers. Female designers like Lauren McCarthy, Tolu Coker, and Nathalie Miebach are some of the influential designers they talked about.
Since the main discussion today is about female designers. I came across one on youtube and her name is Paula Scher, a designer specialising in typography. I came across her documentary on youtube and took a peek on the video. In glimpse, I can already tell she’s very influential and her works are greatly recogniseable.

I love the colours and the drawings overlapping each other

Oil Crayon Practice - my colour lab & open themes
A new pack of oil crayon encourages me to practice this art material more. The texture, the saturated colour, the rough and wild boundaries when drawing a line are all really fascinating to me.
My goal at the beginning is to paint one A4 everyday to see how will my paintings go. From the left to right, top to bottom, the paintings are placed in order from the earliest one to latest one. They are all open themes, just glooming and imagination in my mind. However, a theme is just gradually formed eventually as the drawing is going on.
Strong encourage everyone to paint more, think more and have more fun. Adobe is not everything :D Let’s go old-fashion together
Cheers
These look great!! It’s been awhile since I’ve drawn something non-digital and this inspires me to practice drawing again.
Project 3 : Ask Me Anything
https://maurakurnianto.wixsite.com/basquiat
Here is what my zine currently looks like, I decided to do an interactive zine.
My subject of choice is Jean-Michel Basquiat. At first I was only drawn to his art style and the story behind it, but his take on the art industry fascinates me. His journey to being recognized in the art industry was not easy and I decided to dig a little deeper for this project. I have to say, he’s now one of my favourite artist!

Communication Design Studies reflection
Like the recent Image and Identity assignment, the Communication Design Studies assignment has been really enjoyable due to the amount of creative freedom we were allowed. I had been thinking about the need for an interesting composition and colour palette ever since we attended the Melbourne Zine Fair at the NGV(I) at the start of the semester. The need for an interesting composition of each page was also reinforced in most classes, more specifically the class where Ben told us to rearrange text and a photograph to a more unique layout.
Thus, I merged both my interest for an interesting layout with Saul Bass’ visual and textual style to create my 12-page zine. It took a long time to arrange all of the smaller visual elements and write the answers in a Bass-New York Bronx style. But after a lot of manipulation and constant confinement, I am really proud of the final product.
I didn’t want to utilise the entire 16-page zine spread and spread out the question-and-answer text too far, as the reader would likely be tired halfway through. Thus, I used 12 pages as this allowed for a title page, pages with a full-portrait photograph of Bass, question and answer pages spread out enough, and a back cover that corresponds with the title page to create a sense of unity. The red and orange colour palette derived from Bass’ more popular film posters, such as Saint Joan (1957), Vertigo (1958) and Anatomy of a Murder (1959), seen in my Zine.
Reflecting on the Semester One Communication Design Studies class, I am extremely grateful to Ben, Andy and Karen for leading such an interesting class that provides enjoyable classes and lectures. If I were to do anything differently, I would make more notes in the virtual classrooms to avoid missing important information!
Claudia signing off! :)
I lovee the end result of your zine! The colour palette, layout and design really does reflect the art style of Saul Bass.
Extra Activity
Difference between minimalism and simplicity?
In my opinion, minimalism is reducing quantity or elements that are not ‘essential’ whereas simplicity is reducing the complexity of something. Also, something simple does not always mean it’s minimal. (visual explanation shown below)

An adorable drawing of my dog by Shayna!
So last week in class there was a small competition and the people who won are able to request a drawing by Shayna, our lovely tutor. There were two other winners last week and three new winners this week! Can’t wait to see what they requested.
zine experiments
Did some more experimentations this week with different scanned items, scribbles and messes that I think could work well with my zine.
Stumbled across your account and I have to say I lovee theseee! They look really good! Wish I could do this kind of experiment too
SOMETHING I WISH I HAD SAID
"Put out ideas like you're going to die tomorrow, but, organise your files like you're going to live forever."
-Andy Simionato
These designs reminded me of week 11′s lecture. Very inspirational!
A little throwback!
The semester is almost over! Time flies by really fast :( , so I decided to do a little recap. In the first two lectures of Communication Design Studies, we talked about the outline as well as aims and objective of the course. We also get to see Andy & Karen’s work (which are great!) , and discuss about hand-signals and early writings.
It’s sad that everything has to go online after the first two weeks, but the transition went pretty smoothly and the teachers were very supportive in the situation. I kind of miss doing activities in class though.
Photography: Have you heard of the Lions?
I would like to share some of my photography works. Dance Lion is also my topic for a zine design (which would be posted soon). For a better visual presentation, fortunately, I successfully borrowed a Southern Lion custome.
‘Have you heard of the Lion?’ is created to raise people’s awareness of a traditional art heritage originated from Guangzhou, China - the Lion Dance.
This group of work aims at capturing the beauty of Lion Dance and the fact that it was being forgotten and losing once in order to raise the awareness of people nowadays to pay more attention to traditional art.
What are you trying to show through the photographs?
This art performance started since the Tang Dynasty in ancient China in order to protect people from a monster called 'Nian’ when in Spring Festival. As time went by, the Lion Dance has already become a culture unity of good wishes and Chinese Spring Festival across Asia.
However, because of commercialisation and industrialisation, this heritage was losing at a time because it is time and energy costed. Fortunately, it is such a comfort that the new generation is paying attention to some old and traditional culture such as the Lion Dance. Many creatives produce video, interview or photographs of some traditional culture. A large group of industrial, graphic or fashion designers are inspired by the Dancing Lion. This traditional heritage from our ancestors are promoted in the commercialised market and embrace with the nowadays world.
The photographs look really colourful, does your colour palette represent something?
Yes. I am a big fan of playing around with colours either for my design work or photography. Regarding this project, lion Dance and Chinese Spring Festival related elements and colour are utilised in this project. Additionally, through some flexible pose of the model, the beauty of this dance should be conveyed more effectively.
Another point to mention is the colour applied in this project. To show how this traditional art melts into the contemporary art world, a more contradictory colour combination is applied. The visions are striking and playful.

I really love the photographs!! and I think it’s also great that you chose a very cultural topic, this could help other people become aware about the different cultures. so cool!
This was actually done for one of the image&identity specialist class (inspiring ideation) , but since it has a connection with week 12 tutorial I decide to share it here!
Tutorial 12
In today’s tutorial there was a session where we shared our inspiration for Shayna’s friendly competition. My inspiration would be watching vlogs of other people doing art. Seeing people being productive really inspires me to do the same, especially if they’re doing anything related to art or sharing about their experiences with art. I guess it kind of gave me an insight by looking through another perspective.
I wanted to share a few of the youtube channels that I watch. Hopefully it’ll help inspire you as well!
