Calvary reached its most sacred moment in silence and shadow. “Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, ‘Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ Having said this, He breathed His last” (Luke 23v44-46 NKJV).
The darkness wasn’t defeat, it was divine interruption. Creation itself responded to the weight of what was happening. Sin was being judged, redemption was being secured. The light of the world was absorbing the darkness of humanity. “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5v21 NKJV).
Then the veil was torn. Not by human hands, but by divine power. The barrier between God and man was removed. What once separated was now opened. Access was granted. The holy was no longer hidden. “Having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus” (Hebrews 10v19 NKJV). What religion couldn’t accomplish, the cross completed.
And then Jesus spoke His final words. Not a cry of defeat, but a declaration of trust. “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.” Even in death, He surrendered. Even in pain, He trusted. His life wasn’t taken, it was given. “No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself” (John 10v18 NKJV).
This is the posture of true faith. When you don’t understand, you still trust. When darkness surrounds, you still surrender. When the moment feels heavy, you place your life in the Father’s hands. Because His hands are steady when everything else feels uncertain.
The cross teaches us that surrender isn’t weakness, it’s victory in motion. What looked like an ending became a beginning. What felt like loss became salvation. “For the joy that was set before Him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2 NKJV).
So when you face your own dark moments, remember this scene. Remember the torn veil. Remember the surrendered Savior. And say with confidence, Father, into Your hands I commit my life. Because the same hands that received Jesus are the hands that will hold you.
Today is a solemn day. Christ has carried His Cross, taken the insults, suffered tremendous pain, and has died. Seemingly all hope is lost. The Man who claimed such riches defeated by wood, nails, and hatred. It is a day to reflect on the cost paid by Christ who laid down His life for us. What a blessing, such grace, from a terrible event. Let us share in the grief of His mother who saw her Son take from her, let us too endure the loss of friendship that Mary felt, let us experience the devastation that disciples did. But we know not to lose to hope, we know what is coming. So in amongst the grief and reflections on the cost of sin, let us stay at the foot of the cross and worship and give praise. Let us stay true to Our Lord on this Good Friday.
Jesus told us not to let our hearts be troubled. That means you have a choice. There may be turmoil around you, but His peace can steady you. He will rescue you when you call on Him.
Forgive like God forgave you.
