ART 470 — Week 9: Reading 11
Chapter 8
In the chapter, I have learned new definitions of graphic design. It has said that the design is not just about shape, color, and forms. The design should cross the old boundaries — expand and relate to our daily lives. I have been taught that a graphic designer should know why we make the design? What does the design relate to people? What will be the outcome?
In the first half class, we have practiced the social design. My group did Portland Fortune Teller as our topic of social design. We surprised there were actually many people interested in fortune telling. Although our group members are not really fortunetellers, our booth got attention and people had fun with it at PSU campus. The outcome told us that there were some people did care or worry about their lives for many aspects – luck, love, finance, future, and so on.

Chapter 9
I agreed that creativity is risk-taking. I feel sometimes creativity can be accepted or rejected by audience. I always tried to express my creativity, but I am afraid people would not understand what I am talking about. I hesitate about it and go back the old route of design. I should stop making designs with the way I am comfortable with and explore more ways to present my design such as social design.
The chapter also talks about the myth of originality. Appropriation is a good practice to explore more originality of designs. Sometimes it is just a boundary between originality and appropriation, people perceive design differently. We should explore different ways to present our designs other than digital. For example, hand-drawn style or paper crafting can do the trick.
There are some criteria of good design? Of course, it is the most important that the client is happy. Sometimes clients tend to not like the design that we think it is a good design.
