Precambrian Geologic History of Brazil field trip

Last week, we went to Minas Gerais to study the Brazilian Precambrian Geology. We visited parts of the São Francisco Craton and the Araçuaí Mobile Belt, between the Serra do Cipó and the town of Bom Despacho.

Here are a picture of the Serra do Cipó and a picture of a metadolomite. In these days of field trip, we study some geological features we hadn't studied before.

Metamorphic petrology field trip to Minas Gerais countryside

Some pictures of the metamorphic petrology field to the region of Ponte Nova in the Minas Gerais countryside. We described lots of rocks theses days. We had to describe some really weathered rocks since here in Brazil weathered rocks are more common than fresh rocks and we'll probably work with rocks in that condition. But it was very fun at the end!

Some time ago I was working with an old archive, looking for any geological documents, and found this:

It's a drill log from a geological expedition to Siberia in 1918. I often think about the men who kept it. The log starts in January, the Russian revolution happened just a few months before, probably while they were in the field. The country was in turmoil, the world was changing. And there these people were, in harsh Siberian winter, with a steam powered drill, paving the way for mining operations that are active to this day. Text on the right says they didn't work from 27th of January to 4th of February, because part of the team was Chinese and they were celebrating lunar new year. What was it like? There were no names in this log, but I know these people were out there. And I think that is a connection to the past that history books can't give.

We can see some interesting features:

1. The recristalization of plagioclase and pyroxene.

2. Microfractures in plagioclase.

3. Pyroxene being recristalized into amphibole.

While in the Carrancas region, in the countryside of Minas Gerais, we saw lots of folds. I'm in love with folds!! They're such beautiful structures.

Since Brazil is a tropical country, the rocks undergo intense weathering, but we still can see lots of nice things.
