Why do anti team cap fics, when they are ruled of no wrong doing and are back in the states- why do they come back to live in stark tower where they interact with Tony with each team treating the other badly? Like... Why would team cap even want to live with tony anymore? Let them live elsewhere and away from team iron man, especially Tony.

people aren’t willing to admit that sometimes relationships can’t be repaired. I’m sure they could respect Tony but would never like or trust him.

At civil war, when Tony said 'I was too' in response to being steve's friend I almost literally said b* when? because there weren't scenes of steve being friends that much with avengers, especially tony. Everything tony knows is from his father, which was also most likely a 'greatest creation' because of the serum, not steve.

Steve becomes friends with a lot of the avengers (most notably Natasha, Sam, Wanda and T’Challa) but he and tony were never more than glorified coworkers

There are literally people who hate Steve solely because he was in the military. I get you have issues with the military, but that is a dumb reason to hate Steve, especially when he only joined help stop a tyrannical and fought for everything America is supposed to stand for.

Critiquing the American military is something that is incredibly valid and necessary considering our nation’s long history of imperialism and destabilization. however, hating on Steve for being in the military is somewhat reductive. He joined, as you said, to fight for American ideals, and in the 1940s where patriotic propaganda was rolled out en masse. We see him critiquing the military and government throughout the films so it’s a foolish reason to hate him. if you hate Steve Rogers for joining the army in the 1940s, you have to hate t*ny for providing weapons in the 2000′s, doing more net work than Steve ever could.

Captain America is Political, Deal With It

TW for topics of racism, sexism, anti semitism, ableism, nazism, trump, etc. I think it’s safe to say that the government of the United States has been backsliding into authoritarianism for quite some time now, and the presence of alt right (read: nazi) organizations in governments cannot be made out to be either normal or acceptable. Amidst this, I see a lot of conservative republican people touting Captain America T-shirts and MAGA hats simultaneously. The misconception that Captain America = American Government is an easy one to make, seeing as though half of the names are the same. But the story of Steve Rogers is explicitly political, news flash: he doesn’t subscribe with the beliefs of the current administration.

Steve Rogers…is a leftist.

Let’s look at some historical context. The character was created in March of 1941 by Jewish creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Months before the US joined WWII, the front page showed Captain America punching Hitler. His design—blonde haired, blue eyed—was done purposefully. The perfect ““Aryan”” man…was rejecting Hitler. For the rest of the war Steve Rogers found himself fighting the axis powers until falling to obscurity in the 1950s. Okay, Steve Rogers fights Nazis. Already, that’s a political stance that subscribes more with leftists than present day republicans. But it is his backstory that makes this even clearer. It is depicted well in The First Avenger and in flashbacks in The Winter Soldier. We know a few things about Steve prior to his metamorphosis. He is living in poverty, he is part of the working class, he is Irish, he is Catholic, he is first generation American, he was raised by a single mother, and he’s chronically ill and disabled. These are not attributes that would have made him popular in society in the 1930s-1940s. Arguably, it wouldn’t have made him popular today either. He is oppressed for what he cannot control, and grew up in a time where Socialism was the most popular it had ever been (I won’t go into the history of American socialist movements here or leaders like Eugene V. Debs, but I suggest researching yourself!). It isn’t impossible to think that his mother went on strike while she was alive, or that he was involved in some form of organized union. He was as proletariat as the day is long. Later on in the army, his team is multi racial in a time where the US military was still segregated and had enormous respect for Agent Carter, a woman in a position of authority. Steve Rogers is not a symbol of the government, nor a symbol of conservatism that a lot of people have conflated him to be. Steve Rogers is a nazi fighting, working class icon and we need to remember that in these trying times.

a little out of character for me to talk about superheroes but i think this analysis seems to either miss or purposefully omit that captain america is also a national symbol of america (obviously), which is a settler colony, arguably the world’s most successful imperialist project, and founded on the enslavement of africans and the genocide of indigenous peoples.

a lot of americans like to imagine that their country is ideologically opposed to fascism and nazism, that their country ultimately stands as a beacon of progress and freedom and whatever other positive-sounding words. but just by a cursory look at the history of the country and its current machinations reveals this to be an utter fabrication, and that the united states as a country has itself an inarguably fascistic history, and has continued with fascist flirtations since its inception.

captain america is anti-nazist in origin but also pro-american, and the fact is that american nationalism and patriotism isn’t just compatible with fascism, it actively lends itself to fascism. so when captain america is recuperated as a symbol of american fascist movements, there is a reason for that, and they aren’t completely cycling. captain america is an inherently contradictory figure, as the character’s existence represents essentially an attempt at a fusion of anti-fascism and american nationalism, which are two directly contradictory concepts. given this, captain america clearly is not some sort of useful cultural icon of socialism, at least i personally do not think it’s a good idea for my american comrades to recuperate him as such.

american nationalism is a poison of the mind and has killed in the millions, and it should not be part of any serious socialist movement’s ideology or imagery in my opinion.

Great analysis @transgang ! I didn’t mention America’s colonist nature in this post and I’m glad you brought it up. In my opinion, Captain America shouldn’t be a symbol of a real socialist organization, but can rather be used as an introduction to leftism for casual comic fans who may not typically be politically leftist. This post was more of a mediation on how his imagery doesn’t align with his origin, and as someone who lives in the United States I didn’t mention how his imagery is perceived abroad because I simply don’t know. I’m actually reminded of a deleted scene in AoU where Steve sees that someone has graffitied a picture of him and labeled it “fascist”, causing him to remove his helmet that was portrayed in the graffiti. It would be interesting to see Steve grapple with America’s numerous ideological problems but we ask too much of a major corporation to explore these issues.

I love love love steve rogers and we must protect him but i'm relatively new to this fandom and I understand some of the Tony hate but I still think he's had a decent arc. could you please explain the intense hatred towards him? not looking to fight just to understand because i don't want to support an abusive character if that's what he is

I think other smarter bloggers have already covered this topic better than I have, but I’ll try! Also—if you still like tony stark, that is okay. You are not a band person for finding a character compelling for whatever reason. 

With that said, why do people hate Tony Stark? I think there are a myriad of reasons. 1) civil war discourse. While people hated TS prior to civil war, 2016 really broke the fandom and got the ball rolling. 2) the war profiteering. Say what you will about TS being reformed or whatever, but the truth is that he made billions of dollars off of human suffering. To those who say that he didn’t know where his weapons were going...that’s another reason not to like him, as he is irresponsible and unable to truly own up to what he did. Also, the us military has been involved in a lot of unnecessary, even imperialistic conflict over the years, and his profit off of that makes people uncomfortable. 3) he’s a billionaire. billionaires are bad. next.4) he’s seen as disney’s golden goose, and other characters (namely, Steve Rogers) have been sidelined in order to proponent his story. For example, I didn’t hate him in his own trilogy, but when he’s the main character in team movies,,,it gets irritating. 5) his character arc isn’t actually that strong. He often ends up making the same mistakes, over and over again, like building weapons that end up literally backfiring. it’s boring to see a lack of progression, at least in my opinion. 6) his treatment of women. This is a personal thing and is mostly prevalent in the earlier movies, but his objectification of Natasha, his r*pe joke in ao3, makes me uncomfortable with him. I wouldn’t want to be left alone in a room with this guy. 7) he’s a hypocrite. He signed the Sokovia accords where the government would regulate where he would go, and then goes where he isn’t allowed to go in the same movie. How can he get away with this? See point 3. 8) his role in the Spider-Man films. A lot of Spider-Man fans hate TS because of the large role he plays in Peter Parker’s origin story in the MCU. Him being the one who kind of inspires him to be a hero, gives him a suit, basically kidnaps and manipulates him in civil war, and erasure of uncle Ben is not good. See point 4. His problematic relationship to Peter Parker has been covered a lot, but it’s an issue. And it erases peter’s working class identity but that’s a post for another day.

TLDR He is a billionaire who made his money off of war profiteering and has a myriad of personality problems that make fans uncomfortable at best.

Hi! I'm just another Steve Rogers lover. And the "happy" ending he got in Endgame torn me apart. God knows I still haven't recovered from the depression and anxiety it caused. You said he lived, and I agree. But don't you think he is as good as dead now? Don't you think they have ruined his arc? - someone who can never heal from the wounds Endgame has given me.

Hi! I recently made a post about exactly this! His ending was far from ideal, however, I do not think that his legacy is ruined. Steve Rogers was in the MCU for eight years and in comics since the 1940s. His core characteristics cannot be so easily dismissed by one team of bad writers. And, endgame is full of other characterization issues and missteps, this is just one of the most obvious.

Honestly I love Steve but as the Steve Rogers protection Squad can you guys give the Good Vibes to Scott Lang cuz we can all acknowledge that he is a bomb ass Avenger and father along with Clint Scott doesn't need a giant tacky suit he just needs to be able to shrink and regrow and he could fuck people up plus he grew up poor which means he understands the value of shit and he got a master's in electronics while in jail for whistleblowing
