CasinoTrip Staff Review: Spielbank Berlin
Berlin is obviously a major European city, with bustling cafes, bars, restaurants, and too many attractions to see in a few days. When you go to Berlin and you have casinos on your mind, make notice that there is just one major gaming venue in the city, and a few other smaller gaming halls spread around. If you are looking for the local gambling experience in Berlin, here is what I discovered during my one week stay in Germany's Capitol.
I went to the casino in Berlin, locally known as Spielbank Berlin, when I visited the city on July 2014. The casino is located inside the Sony Center, which contains a mix of shops, restaurants, a conference center, an IMAX Theater and more. This location is in a prestigious part of Berlin near Potsdamer Platz, which is a major business and shopping area. A large shopping mall is situated right next to the casino.
I got to the casino at around 19:00 on Wednesday, which is pretty much the local dinner time. The entrance fee to the casino is 2.5 Euros and identification must be presented in order to get in. When I got in, I saw that the casino wasn't really full and there were about 70 people inside, although it might have been just because it was still a bit early. I paid the fee and got a guest card which later used me to buy chips.
The impressively designed casino is divided into three floors: The lower floor is a slot hall where you will find all sorts of slot machines and video Poker. Some of the slots had a 1 Euro minimum deposit, while others were as low as 10 cents. There is no Bar in this floor, but it is possible to order drinks from the waitresses, which were very pleasant and nice.
On the ground floor which is also the main entrance floor, there is a pit with Poker tables, surrounded by slot machines up against the walls. The Poker players are at the center of the floor, and I have seen regular Poker tables as well as cash tables. The minimum blind bet at the tables was 5 Euros, and the casino also hosts some of the European Poker tours, as well as regular tournaments.
The upper floor is where I spent most of my time in the casino. The elevator takes you straight up into the Royal casino, with both American and French roulette tables, alongside a few Blackjack tables, a smoking lounge and a Bar. There was only one active Blackjack table with players when I got there, and since that is my game I sat down immediately. The minimum bet was 4 Euros, although there were people playing for hundreds of Euros in the very same table.
After an hour or so I have decided that was enough. The atmosphere was a bit dull I must say, but then again it very much might have had something to do with the timing of my arrival. To summarize the experience, it is fair to say that the Spielbank Berlin is a very elegant place, and very suitable for players with the right kind of wallet. People looking for the party style 'Vegas' experience will not find it here.
