Making a Cosplay of @chaotpayasoâs Chimera!Jeff, part 2 of⊠Something?: More Tail
Iâve been struck by the ao3 writerâs curse, and I had to bench this project for a little bit. This tail has been sitting in my living room for over a month. BUT I AM BACK! And I have some progress to show for it, too.
So after some sketching and even more thought, I decided to go with a half-covered design. Iâm basically going to be using a cosmetic fabric cover, and then placing foam plates over it so that there are a variety of textures giving a mechanical look, without compromising structure and movement.
Above you can see the base tail from the previous post! In order to make a pattern for the cover, I wrapped it in saran wrap, then put down a layer of tape onto the tail. I didnât get any photos of this process while it was happening because I messed up and the tail was curved in a bad way, so I had to do some problem solving so the base didnât get damaged. But you can see the tape pattern up there, which consists of just two pieces. It doesnât look that good but thatâs how I make custom patterns for things. What matter is it works, right?
I also keep all my patterns in case I want to do a future project without needing to make more. I also offer irls of mine to take patterns Iâve made that I donât want to use anymore. I think itâs important to share things like that.
Unfortunately (and aside from tools) I had to buy some fabric. I really did think I had fabric that would work for this project but it was too stiff. I needed a silver-like fabric which had a little give to it so that it wouldnât reduce the movement of the tail. Iâve tried making a cover before using an old cotton shirt and it just didnât work. It needs to be a little bit stretchy.
Now, the fabric doesnât look that shiny. This is because itâs the back side of the fabric. Youâll see in the other photo of the complete cover that itâs actually quite shiny.
The sewing process wasnât too hard. Iâm just not really a sewing machine person. I am borrowing this machine and the thread broke??? I was really spooked because Iâm not that experienced with rethreading, but after some trial and error things turned out okay. Unfortunately one of the ends I had to anchor with some hot glue, but apparently thatâs actually not too uncommon to do in even professional work.
And here it is now! You can see how much smoother it looks, which still seeing a little bit of the segments inside. Itâs not really perfect. But Iâm not the most experienced person despite having done plenty of fabrication in my life.
The next step will be designing and fabricating the plates, and then the holster mechanism to keep the tail on! After that, the tail will basically be done. I may have to purchase a few more things for the project (sadly) but it would just be another can of spray paint, and some magnets. All things considered, this tail has been almost entirely no-cost, which is really cool.
After the tail is done, Iâm gonna start working on the head pieces. I think those will be particularly interesting in designing. Don not sure how I will approach the visor just yet, but I think I might try reshaping some plastic from a bottle or something. I just. Have to find a green bottle. Maybe a friend drinks green stuff(????)
The evil and ambitious side of me also wants to try making a tongue prosthetic. But that would be a lot of materials and time for something almost completely unnoticeable. I already have fake fangs, I donât think it will be necessary.
Anyways! Thatâs all I have to show for now. Next update will be more exciting I promise ~
