Have I posted this before? Well Shelflife 3 is another great Calibre weirdly almost ruined by one very discordant track in the middle which spoils the mood and flownearly
And another 12" - Dusky's Love Taking Over. Weirdly this sounds quite feasible at either 33 or 45 :) . Great track
The Nine Bows EP, double 12" on splattered vinyl. Some great tracks on this especially by Aashton
Just a bit disappointing . There are a couple of good tracks and this is one of them, but at an overall level it doesn't really work that well.
2 albums of the year in 2 days. The new #yagya album, Sleepygirls, is a work of deep beauty that broods and rolls like the calm before a storm. Wonderful
Half way through 2014 and a record of the year contender. This one just soars. Innovative production, soulful vocals, unusual production and the hand of Floating Points can be heard everywhere. Try the KNX produced "Underwater" as well
The DJ Kicks series is always pretty good - and there have been some great editions lately, from Maya Jane Coles, Breach, Photek etc. The Brandt Brauer Frick edition is a bit patchy, but there are some killer tracks on it. Like this
Little Dragon's work always flatters to deceive - well, apart from their excellent first album anyway. The pattern's always the same. I hear a couple of tracks, I get excited, I buy the album and ... it just doesnt quite do it for me. Nabuma Rubberband (great title though) is the same. There are promising beginnings, unusual chord sequences, rhythms, and uses of space but ultimately ... doesn't quite work. Works better on headphones though
Ah, Robyn the thinking person's Euro-pop star. Body Talk was a genuinely great pop album, and this collaboration with Royksopp as well a featuring the atrociously catchy "Do It Again" (even if it does sound like something Daft Punk should have made) has Monument, a dark masterpiece.
And what could be better, when you are not watching the World Cup, than to relax to Thievery Corporation in Brazilian lounge mood, touches of samba, bossa nova and old film scores? Except that its all curiously bloodless. Its pleasant enough, but the Thieves sound like they are going the through the formulaic motions and end up sounding less like themselves than like Nicola Conte. Its aimiable enough but ultimately forgetable
Very possibly album of the year so far. Very truthful authentic old school house with basslines that just rumble through you on. Would have been album of the year if released in 1992, definitely is now
Love Moodymann....just love him. Dark mellow subterranean beats that always work. Have a feeling I have head some of this already on the Black Mahogany series, but never mind! This is still really great
6th Borough project newie, Borough 2 Borough. I always get a bit disappointed by this project - some nice beats, but a little too repetitive. Track #2 Our Love is the best, but sadly this one sets you up and disappoints you. Not satisfying
Instrumental atmospheric Guitar based music - a bit like the Durutti Column with less soul. Its pleasant enough but not deep enough to give any real satisfaction
There's a lot of these funky brass bands around these days, and to be honest I prefer the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, but there's a couple of cool tracks on this and more use of a Sousaphone than you usually get
