This is true! The zoo where I volunteer (the illustrious Columbus Zoo & Aquarium) was one of the pioneers of this program.

Our zoo is known for raising cheetah cubs. Cheetahs have a terrible infant mortality rate and cubs are often rejected, so we get a lot of cubs to raise from all over the country (other zoos and sanctuaries, mostly).

The cubs are placed with a puppy friend when they are wee and small, so they grow up together like littermates. They play together, wrestle, and the dogs (yellow Labs) are so calm, friendly and well-socialized that the cheetahs take behavioral cues from them. When they meet new people, or go into new situations (which they often do, as ambassador animals for cheetah conservation), they check out if their dog friend is feeling chill - which he is - and then they know it’s okay for them to be chill, too.

Basically the dog is a service animal for them.

The cats need their dog friends less and less as they get older and more comfortable, but they still often hang out as grownups.

Our zoo does cheetah runs, where the cheetahs get to chase a lure and show off their speed. Often they’ll have one of the cheetahs run (we have like twelve cheetah), and then they’ll have one of the dogs do the run to show how much faster the cats are. People get a kick out of that. The dogs…let’s just say they try their best.

This is what felting is.  It’s a very good hobby for somebody who enjoys stabbing ^u^  what do you think I do all day?

Wanna know how it works?

Those needles have barbs that catch and tangle the fibers of the roving (the term for that loose wool) together. The more you stab it the more tightly-packed and the more firm the object becomes. It takes a lot of little stabs to smooth out the texture on the surface and is best done with a single fine gauge needle.

Fun fact: the longer you use a felting needle the sharper it becomes, as the wool polishes the point.

This doesn’t bode well for your fingers but hey. It’s a fun art filled with cute projects, lots of stabbing, blood, and swearing.

Can’t believe I forgot to post this but here’s the entire Inuyasha gang + inu big bro lol.  But honestly, I like how you can kind of see the divergence of styles as you go down the photo set lol. I guess that’s what happens when you draw at different periods of your life, spanning over a year (happy new year, I guess?)😅

HALF BAD OUTCUT #1

This is from the original ms that I sent to my agent and I cut it (I think) before we sent the ms to publishers. I don’t really like the jewellery box simile but I v much like Gabriel here.

Each night we sit together in the cave mouth. We keep the fire small like a precious jewel, glowing in a jewellery box. The huge trees are its dark walls and the open lid, the sky.  There are an absurd number of stars on the lid.  

We talk about things: I tell him what I know about Russia, stuff Celia told me; he tells me about France and teaches me some French words but then smiles at my accent. 

One night he sings La Marseillaise whilst marching round the fire and I sit cross legged and watch him. His huge boots stomp, his long legs in canvas trousers stride past. He throws off his jacket and his t-shirt is tight on his chest. His head is down so I see his hair and at the far side of the fire it is glowing from the flames, then his head is back shouting out the song. He finishes with a salute before dropping to his knees in front of me.

I tell him, ‘You’re better at poetry.’

He frowns. ‘You laughed at my poetry.’

I shrug. And I remember him standing in the apartment kitchen and I didn’t understand the poem but his voice was beautiful.

‘What?’ He looks intrigued. ‘Do you want me to recite a poem?’

He reads me better than Celia did.  

But he is serious now. ‘Can you ask or is that impossible?’

I think about it but I’m not sure how to ask, and so I say, ‘Impossible.’
