second of all, isn't that the best part of the sincaraz dynamic??? they are so Complicated and Contradictory in the most intriguing way like how are you giving off a COWORKER vibe to a guy you said "means a lot to me" but then how do you say "we don't spend that much time talking off the court" about a guy who JUST said "we are good friends" they both truly move in ways more mysterious than someone switching lanes suddenly without their blinker on the freeway

yeah, i mean clearly there is something about their relationship where it canāt simply stay that way. with fedal, they had their differences, but at some point they both simply said: yes we are rivals, but we also get along well, and our good relationship is meaningfulā¦ uhhhh, for tennis!
but with sincaraz, i feel like there is still a tension. of something not quite settled. because as you said, how can you ascribe so much meaning to this rivalry one day, and then on another itās just like any coworkerās relationship? how can your face literally light up every time you hear the other guyās name, but then you donāt even talk to each other?
alsoā¦ why donāt you talk? after knowing each other since the alicante challenger. after jannikās visit to alicante years later. after staying for the unveiling of pista carlos alcaraz and taking pictures like a proud boyfriendā¦ why arenāt you closer? because clearly, jannik is capable of being āreally good friendsā with another tennis player, even if heās played the guy in grandslam semis. even if that guy is in the top 5 now.
at the risk of making everything about tennis again ā which it certainly isnāt, but the tennis is all we see ā i canāt help but notice that with jack, while jannik does praise his abilities as a top player, i donāt get the feeling he considers him a threat. and this is no shade to jack, but, wellā¦ he just got here. he just got to the top ten and into jannikās vicinity, while jannik was already no. 1 in the world and capable beating everyone on hard court. well, everyone except carlos alcarazā¦
meanwhile, the extroverted and extremely people-pleasing part of this duo doesnāt seem to have any āvery good friendsā on the tour. at least no one he consistently talks about, or no one he hangs out with outside of practice. i mean, for christās sake, he said his emergency contact would be novak djokovic, of all people šØ there was no player we saw him spend significant time with last season, or at least no one who was mentioned as a friend. so who can he talk to, besides his team and his family? (also side note: it canāt be healthy for a 20 year old to only be surrounded by middle-aged men, right? i mean, has he even talked to a woman who isnāt his mom? sometimes iām grateful tennis pretends to be so apolitical, bc i donāt wanna know what kind of political views someone picks up from a circle like that.)
anyway, how much of carlosā praise of and attachment to jannik is just longing for someone who gets him? some who has fought for a place among the greats his entire life and, now that heās there, still feels unhappy? but again, i donāt think carlos really gets jannik. how he must feel now, with the talk in the locker room and the statements to the press. and i donāt think carlos has reached that age yet where you realize that friendships donāt just happen on their own. at least speaking for myself, it took me a while in my early twenties to figure out that if i wanted to be less lonely, iād have to put in the actual work to reach out to people, lol.
okay, today i donāt have a poetic conclusion to all of my disjointed thoughts. but all of this is to say that i think there is certainly a lot of potential for this relationship to develop in all kinds of directions, which makes it so interesting. and the more they play each other, the more we might see this tension grow. and hopefully implode some day, hehe.

well, i have thoughts (or you might call them delusions) about what their relationship off the court might be like. but before you open the rest of this post, be aware that i fully lost my mind and wrote way too many paragraphs. and debated hard whether to post this or to delete it all. and still probably havenāt answered anything. soā¦ sorry about that. also bear in mind i do not know these people.
but yeah, here you go. sincaraz thoughts below the cut.
- fundamentally i believe that they are just colleagues who donāt even see each other that often and donāt talk that much (and thus i donāt think jannik would expect a text from carlos in any case)
- i do, however, also believe they are not immune to the narrative(s). people want them to be the next fedal, which carlos would happily fulfil because those are the people he looks up to the most on more than just a tennis level. so he happily answers questions about jannik, he finds their rivalry special, i mean iām sure he would love to play huge and ridiculous charity exhos with jannik if they had the time. meanwhile on jannikās side, i think he has certainly felt the pressure to be like carlos in the previous years of his career. to be older than this guy and still be lagging behind in ranking and big titles must have been on his mind. so i think jannik was certainly motivated by the rivalry as well. but maybe not in that singular, special kind of way. i think he felt a similar motivation with djokovic, and even other players, to achieve what they did.
- then, i think some factors from last season have made things a little more interesting. jannik started beating djokovic (and meddy and many more). he became a grand slam champion. ahead of indian wells, him and carlos are only 500 ranking points apart. meanwhile carlos is struggling. he hasnāt won anything since wimbledon (iām not saying he actually had bad results, but the pressure on that 20 year old was insanely high). he keeps losing to djokovic and meddy. and jannik. we know from the āmy wayā documentary that his motivation for tennis was dwindling, and that his team was trying to cheer him up with golf (lmao). but indian wells is his shit. he plays well there. and he plays jannik next. now enter the infamous rain delayā¦. where they both say they talked about ālifeā. which now, with the documentary out, i imagine was mostly about that struggle. to stay motivated. to feel the pressure. to have the expectations of your country on your back and the olympics coming soon. and how can you not bond over that? and if you didnāt bond, why show up in your rivalās documentary?? anyway they play an amazing match, probably the most fun carlos has had on the court for a while. and when he has fun, he wins. and takes the title, too.
but after miami, jannik gets the call. the devastating āyes alex, i am always positiveā call. so obviously, that changes things. how can it not? which is how we got the sincaraz divorce era (honorable mention to french open semis and carlos unfollowing anna on insta jsfshsj). i mean, maybe iām projecting here (could say that about this whole paragraph omg why is it so long), but as an anxious person, i too would have to focus all of my energy on being able to do my job and staying alive during a crisis like that. so i think there simply wasnāt much space for jannik to think about carlos beyond worrying about what he and the other players in the locker room would think or say once the news broke.
- anyway, then thereās the whole second half of 2024, but iām gonna try to keep it shorter now: carlos (understandably) has a crashout after the stress of a channel slam and the emotional devastation of his olympics loss. meanwhile jannik wins the us open despite (or because of?) the shit he gets after his case goes public (dishonourable fuck you to kyrgios). i mean how insane is that? to have the season that jannik had, even with so much going on.
and how does it all lead to their beijing final? and their shared plane ride to shanghai? presumably discussing jannikās appearance in the documentary? and carlos then sitting almost in jannikās box at the final? and then the great six kings final confetti incident of 2024? (i may have lost my mind on that day). well, anon, i honestly have no fucking clue. maybe they talked. maybe they just felt a little more relaxed and less burdened by the tour at the end of the year. or maybe other good things were happening in their lives? really, no idea. but all of this is to say: i think 2024 certainly got them somewhere. somewhere at eye level. somewhere where they are having fun at joint work events, maybe more than they would with other atp colleagues. but still, probably not talking privately. because what would there be to talk about besides work? what else is there in their small little world, besides tennis?
- which brings me to the ban. i mean, what did carlos really think about it? honestly, iām sure he felt bad for jannik on a personal level. i would say āsince it could just as well happen to himā, but i honestly think that carlos is a little too cocky to think that something like that could happen to him. injury? sure. but contamination? nah, no way. i think a lot of players think like that ā mostly bc they do not actually read or understand the rules (shoutout to chris eubanks, the only atp player with reading comprehension). anyway, to me that also explains the weird interview answers carlos gave on the topic. even if he had sympathy for jannik, he didnāt actually get it (which reminds me a bit of the old fedal disputes, but thatās a whole other long ass post). and on a professional level, i think he was aware at the beginning that not having the hype of potentially playing jannik, the no. 1, in epic semis or finals for three whole months would hamper his motivation. but obviously, he still did well for himself, with a 500, a masters, and a barcelona final. maybe he found a bit more focus. or maybe hsās just doing his job as always. at this point, why would he think about jannik? where would he even find the time? and what would he even write him? āsorry about the ban, bro š„ŗš„ŗš„ŗš„ŗ get well soon šā (well now i can actually picture that). but yeah, iām a strong believer in adhdcaraz fully forgetting that people exist if he doesnāt see them regularly (hashtag relatable) and also him being told to focus on tennis by his team of divorced middle aged dads (sry that was mean ily team alcaraz).
- now. āhere we are. we are in romeā. and jannik had lots of time. to smooch. to bike. to bulk. and to overthink his return, of course. who wouldnāt? so after three months, did he maybe start noticing that carlos used to congratulate him on every trophy within 10 seconds, but couldnāt even be bothered to ask how he was just once? or did he watch carlos fumbling matches and thought: if heād played against me, it wouldāve been different? or did he try not to think about carlos at all because carlos is the tour? the one thing he is missing out on and yet afraid to return to?
i donāt know. all i know is that whenever i try to separate their relationship from tennis, i find myself returning right back to it in the next sentence. because everything is about tennis. except tennis, which is about love.
in the end, iām sure without tennis, jannik had to find other priorities for a while, while carlosā priority was still the same. and iām sure jannik had many loved ones who had nothing to do with tennis reach out to him. but in the end, he was always going to return to tennis, with its awkward press conferences and suffocating locker rooms. so anyone who was āsafeā, like jack and sonny, would be appreciated in a time like this. but can carlos ever be āsafeā? they barely started talking. they barely like each other. and heās the one rival who one who can still beat jannik, even during his best streak. so we donāt know.
but heāll make jannik play better. try harder. and isnāt that kind of like love?
ok after some thinking, i'm not saying it's for sure carlos since jannik didn't say anything specifically, we're speculating ofc, but i don't think it's as bad as it seems. realisitcally we know they aren't actually that close, and they've gone hot and cold with each other before (post IW last year). and even still it seems clear that carlos doesn't have negative feelings about jannik and the whole situation. not texting jannik during a 3 month period where he was dealing with his own issues and minding his own business when they're really just friendly coworkers is not that bad, especially if he has no clue about jannik's feelings on people reaching out to him.
