If one reads enough books one has a fighting chance. Or better, one’s chances of survival increase with each book one reads.

"...like Aurélie, she was nothing but a bird in an oil slick; but she had retained, if I can put it this way, a superior ability to flap her wings. In one or two years she would gice up any last matrimonial ambitions, her imperfectly extinguished sensuality would lead her to seek out the company of young men, she would become what we used to call a cougar, and no doubt she'd go on this way for several years, ten at the most, before the sagging of her flesh became prohibitive, and condemned her to a lasting solitude."

The time to talk about your wife is before It is the difference between a shield and a sword And if you want the battle to be fought without arms bring her with you
"Shot Tower" by Bert Almon
I want to think of poems as if made in a shot tower, a tall building where molten lead poured through a sieve drops a long way, with surface tension forming perfect spheres, annealed by the plunge into the cold water tank of reality at the bottom. Instead I confront a bored detective digging a misshapen bullet out of a wall after it missed the target. A leaden clot dropped into a plastic bag but marked by human choice. Pure gravity writes no poetry.
We’re in such a hurry most of the time we never get much chance to talk. The result is a kind of endless day-to-day shallowness, a monotony that leaves a person wondering years later where all the time went and sorry that it’s all gone.

The place to improve the world is first in one’s own heart and head and hands, and then work outward from there.

“The People of the Other Village” by Thomas Lux
hate the people of this village and would nail our hats to our heads for refusing in their presence to remove them or staple our hands to our foreheads for refusing to salute them if we did not hurt them first: mail them packages of rats, mix their flour at night with broken glass. We do this, they do that. They peel the larynx from one of our brothers’ throats. We devein one of their sisters. The quicksand pits they built were good. Our amputation teams were better. We trained some birds to steal their wheat. They sent to us exploding ambassadors of peace. They do this, we do that. We canceled our sheep imports. They no longer bought our blankets. We mocked their greatest poet and when that had no effect we parodied the way they dance which did cause pain, so they, in turn, said our God was leprous, hairless. We do this, they do that. Ten thousand (10,000) years, ten thousand (10,000) brutal, beautiful years.

"The Pequod Meets the Virgin" Robert Rehder
A would-be poet whom I will call D Because you have never heard of him
And I hadn’t either – He edits an obscure magazine
Of quite breathtaking mediocrity Due to his total incapacity
To tell a good poem from a bad one And made more obscure
By the publication of his own mawkish verses, D read a few of my poems
And told a friend that they were ‘Too intellectual’.
When the first blind unreasoning rage had passed, My impulse was to smash his face in
And knock him down. He’s smaller than I am
Even if he is a pretentious cretin. I have no problem with criticism
As long as it’s constructive, But kicking him very hard in the crotch
Might not hurt him enough Since he’s a eunuch,
Therefore, it might be better Just to beat him to pulp.
Then a more moderate approach Suggested itself:
A rocket attack on his car To blast the little twerp to smithereens.
Later, in a calmer mood, I contemplated Using plastic explosive to blow up his house.
I would be sorry to harm his wife or children, But the important thing is
To obliterate every trace of him. Doing an insurance case in Florida,
Stephen had met a shady character Who had offered to bump off anyone he didn’t like,
So months later, After my anger had passed,
I thought of taking out a Mafia contract And wondered if I could get
The name and address from Stephen. Finally, I decided to forgive
And forget, Simply vowing him
My undying hatred. The future, so they say, depends
Upon harnessing solar energy. Who am I to disagree?
I am Rumpletstiltskin And this is my stamp collection.
