From hypable, 'COIN HEIST' Book Review: A fun heist story with heart.
Coin Heist introduces us to four characters that are unlikely to be friends or even acquaintances under normal circumstances. Unfortunately for Alice, Dakota, Benny, and Jason there’s nothing normal about their situation. The headmaster has spent all the schools money on his day trading scheme and now it’s up to the students of Haverford Friends prep school to save it.
The novel is told from four different perspectives (Alice, Dakota, Benny, and Jason) as they plot to save the school by robbing the U.S. Mint. Each character has their own reason for wanting to save the school as well as their own skill set to help pull off the heist. The voices of the characters are distinctive, so even though the story is told from four separate perspectives, it never gets confusing. The characters are also diverse representing a realistic group of teens.
Coin Heist plays with some recognizable conventions of heist novels but adds in a few twists of its own. It also addresses the moral dilemma at the heart of the story and handles the ethical dilemma the characters face in a way most YA novels don’t.
Filled with tech details and U.S. Mint lore the Coin Heist is a fast paced, fun summer read not to be missed.
An awesome readergirlz blog on the story behind the Coin Heist cover! : http://bit.ly/1oikFLC
Elisa Ludwig's Coin Heist is out this month, and we had to ask her about that cover! Here she is to share the story: "I felt very very lucky to be part of the early cover design discussion. We shared some of our favorite covers for books out now, as well as some movie posters and went back and forth. My main input was that I wanted the cover to feel contemporary and fresh, to capture the fun and exciting pace of the story, and to appeal to boys and girls equally. No small feat! "I got to see four rounds of comps, and it was fascinating to watch the ideas and inspirations evolve. I made some comments and suggestions along the way, but I also acknowledged that even though I have lots of opinions, I'm in the word business and not the image business, so I fully trusted the experts involved to come up with a great solution. "I saw many 'original' images with different initial concepts. While they all shared a certain minimalist sensibility, some emphasized coins rather than human figures, others a 'plan notebook,' and still others had a tiled floor that represented the Mint at night. It's truly amazing how a seemingly simple design can communicate the plot, the mood, the characters and even the imagined reader of a book. "When I first saw the final cover, I loved it right away. I'm a sucker for vintage graphics, and I thought the white font, bold green and stark silhouettes really evoked classic mystery/heist book covers while the background suggests the more tech-y, modern element of this particular plan. At the same time the details on the figures are emblematic of the characters in a way that won't limit the reader's imagination. My biggest takeaway: I'm in awe of designers! The silhouettes are an original illustration by Tahnee Gehm. "I've already gotten a ton of positive feedback (from, it should be noted, both guys and girls). So yeah, I'd say it hit the mark."
Our author talks all things HEIST in this great blog by Laura Pauling :
If you’ve known me for any length of time as a writer and/or reader or have stopped by the blog at all in the past few years, then you might know that I love heist movies and books! Love them.
My post on the story structure of a heist movie in 15 sentences is my most viewed post and shows up on the first page if you google: How to write a heist novel.
I recently read Coin Heist by Elisa Ludwig and loved it! And I’ve read and watched a lot. I considered this one excellent.
I was psyched when Elisa said she’d guest post on the background behind writing Coin Heist! Oh, and watch the video (link at the bottom). It’s pretty cool.
***
Pulling a heist is no joke, and while the process of writing about one is somewhat easier, there are still plenty of challenges for the author at the helm.
I had some preparation for the climactic scene in COIN HEIST as I’d already written the three books in the PRETTY CROOKED series (Katherine Tegen), all of which involve thievery, break-ins, scams, carjacking, computer sleuthing and code breaking.
Even so, getting four teens into the Philadelphia Mint required research—a lot of research. First, I read as much as I could about the Mint, its history and heists at all of the U.S. mints over the years.
Then, because I live locally, I cased the joint on foot, walking in as a tourist. (FYI: It’s a very cool place to visit, but it often gets slept on in the middle of Philly’s historic Old City district.) I wore my baby in an Ergo carrier, which, I hoped, would help me evade suspicion. Meanwhile, I took copious notes on my iPhone.
The tour allows you to watch the coins as they’re being made on the production floor, so after a couple of visits, I got a sense of how to physically stage the night of the heist.
However, I still needed some more information about how the computer hacking portion of the heist would take place. That’s when I called on Michael Viscuso, a computer security expert. (Conveniently, one of my day job freelance gigs happens to be writing for a company called Net Diligence, which offers cyber risk management services.)
Michael walked me through multiple scenarios for how it could go down, and together we decided on the best one for the purposes of the book—something teens could feasibly pull off. I knew I wanted a combination of hacking and real-life stealing, because frankly, reading about someone sitting at a computer, no matter how many risks they’re taking, is kind of dull.
Oh, and the part about the prom at Franklin Institute? I didn’t need to research it. I lived it. My own senior prom took place there, but we didn’t have a cool band like Jason’s headlining. We had a band called the Flaming Caucasians—which was about as terrible as it sounds.

Adaptive Studios challenged me to come up with my own illustrations evolving around the story of Coin Heist, it was a very fun book to read! This is my final take on Alice Drake, Jason Hodges, Dakota Cunningham and Benny Yizar, the main characters of Coin Heist.
COIN HEIST is a fast-paced YA thriller by Elisa Ludwig, the acclaimed writer ofPretty Sly and Pretty Crooked. The last place you’d expect to find a team of criminals is at a prestigious Philadelphia prep school. But on a class trip to the U.S. Mint—which prints a million new coins every 30 minutes—an overlooked security flaw becomes far too tempting for a small group of students to ignore. United by dire circumstances, these unlikely allies—the slacker, the nerd, the athlete, and the “perfect” student—band together to attempt the impossible: rob the U.S. Mint. COIN HEIST is a dynamic caper told from the revolving perspectives of four teens, each with their own motive for committing a crime that could change all of their lives for the better—that is, if they can pull it off. Smash and grab it! On sale now! amzn.to/Uxz6Bv

I was asked by Adaptive Studios to create an illustration from their new book Coin Heist. After they described the book to me as Breakfast Club meets Ocean’s 11 I was instantly on board. I truly loved and related to these characters, and by the time the book ended I wanted to make an illustration for nearly every chapter.

When Adaptive Studios contacted me last month with an advance copy of their new YA novel Coin Heist by Elisa Ludwig, and the opportunity to do a promotional illustration for it I was thrilled. I was even more thrilled to find that when I picked up the book I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished, because it was super entertaining and had a lot of heart! I got very attached to the main four characters, so providing my own take on them could not have been more fun. For more information on what I found to be a great read, check out the links below!

About a month or so ago, Adaptive Studios contacted me to see if I wanted to do an illustration to help promote a new book. I was super excited about the opportunity, and happily relieved that the book was also a great read. It would be excellent for reading on vacation, stuck in an elevator, waiting for your tater tots to come out of the oven…or really any time I guess. Be sure to check out the links below!

A few weeks ago I was contacted by Adaptive Studios to create an illustration inspired by a scene from their new YA thriller Coin Heist by Elisa Ludwig. They sent me a copy of the book, and it was such a fast-paced and entertaining story that I was immediately sucked in the book and breezed right through it!
For my illustration I decided to draw the moment when Benny, Alice, Jason, and Dakota’s schemes started to take definite shape as they got together for the first time to plan their heist.
If you want to know what happens next—and if you’re looking for something really fun, light, and exciting to add to your reading list— then I highly recommend you check this book out!

"COIN HEIST is indeed a tale of an epic break-in at the Philadelphia Mint. But that's only half the story. The other half is a touching coming-of-age story and the third half is a wonderful character study of teenage life in America as it's lived now. Look, maybe I'm not good at math and maybe three-halves is impossible. Or maybe COIN HEIST is just that good." -- Josh Berk, Edgar Award finalist and author of The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin and Guy Langman: Crime Scene Procrastinator
Coin Heist Review by Reece Hasselbalch Davison
Thank you for reading and reviewing Coin Heist!
Reece Hasselbalch Davison will be a junior this fall at Millard West High School in Omaha, NE.
"I really enjoyed reading this, the idea of robbing the U.S mint is an original plot for a young adult book. Nevertheless, Alice talked at the end of the book how their criminal team had defied social math, but I never saw enough evidence of it in the kids' behavior towards one another. I felt that there should've been clearer scenes of their growing camaraderie, of them
hanging out and planning the crime. There could've been parts where its just Benny and Dakota working out details for the heist and she tells him of her bulimia and he expresses his worry of being able to provide for his grandparents. Alice and Jason would be a good couple, but the reader could see their growing friendship through a trip to a coffee shop or something where they talk about the school and have deeper conversations on their dads' problems.
Also, I feed off visuals when I read and I couldn't get a good picture on what kind of school the kids were saving. Tradition was thrown around and Dakota described what she loved about it such as the corridors, but other than that it was difficult for me to get a clear image.
It was cool to read it through all four kids' perspectives and funny because they each had a different personality and sense of humor. All of them represented a social dynamic that is typical for any school and I think part of the message of this book is that kids from all various backgrounds and situations can come together and accomplish anything, no matter how dangerous. At the end of the day I loved this book, and would recommend it to any reader."
