They asked for Colonel James Moriarty in 94, with Lee Pace as a face claim. For those of you who haven’t read it yet, Colonel James is from Kim Newman’s The Hounds of D'Ubervilles and is Professor James Moriarty’s younger brother.

Poisonous Inktober - Entries 15/16/17/18/19/20 !!
I was more or less on schedule for inktober these past few days but I just didn’t have the courage to post anything. Not so much about downloading the pictures, but research work and data collection about the different plants is long and a little bit fastidious ^^’
Viscum album Gui Mistletoe
This one is commonly known by everyone. It’s a type of parasite and its toxicity depends on the subject/plant species it’s on (mostly hardwoods). Ingestion of the berries can cause digestive disorders and after eating more than ten, heart disease.
Euonymus europaeus Fusain, Fusain d’Europe Spindle, European spindle
The whole plant is toxic, but the fruits, shaped like the mitre of the bishops, are the most poisonous, causing digestive disorders, liver and kidney damage.
Atropa belladona Belladone, Belle dame, Cerise du Diable, Belladona, Deadly nightshade
Deadly poison, the belladona is completly toxic. After ingestion of any part of the plant (especially the berries) symptoms are increased thirst, muscle weakness, tachycardia, hyperthermia, hallucinations and death by paralysis of repiratory tract.
Rhus typhina Sumac vinaigrier, Sumac de Virginie Staghorn sumac
This one is not the most dangerous of its species (like Rhus toxicodendron), but it can still cause a vicious itching on the skin or rash by simple contact.
Daphne laureola Daphne lauréole, Spurge laurel
The berries are the most poisonous part of the plant. Ingested in large quantities, they can cause burning of the digestive tract and convulsions.
Daphne mezereum Bois-gentil, bois-joli, verdelet February daphne, mezereum
From the same genus as the one above, this one is far more lethal. Handling the fresh twigs can cause rash and eczema. But after eating more than ten berries, death is the only conclusion (convulsions, coma, …).
Poisonous Inktober - Day 21, 22, 23, 24 & 25
With those five, I wanted to make some kind of link with the folklore and traditions surrounding poisonous plants.
The first three, with flowers that look like helmets, are of the genus Aconitum. All members of this group are highly lethal. In Greek mythology, the herb was created from the slavering mouth of Cerberus (some of the symptoms caused after ingestion are similar to those caused by rabies). There are more commonly known to have been historically used to kill wolves and therefore, werewolves (see Teen Wolf).
If you saw or read Harry Potter, you may (or may not) recognize the fourth one. Due to the humanlike shape of the roots and the hallucinogenic effects, Mandrake has long been used in magic rituals. In the Middle Ages, by absorption through the skin, witches could be led into a deep trance. It also had a lot of therapeutical applications such as against rheumatic disorders or to assist women in childbirth.
The last one is known as Mountain-ash or Rowan (Teen Wolf again (¬ ¬)). Although it is not particularly harmful, mountain-ash wood is known for its magical and symbolic properties. It’s an important symbol in the Nordic mythology and is known as “Thor”s protection”.
Aconitum anthora Anthore Anthora, Yellow Monkshood, Healing Wolfsbane Found in the Alps and the Carpathians, Anthora is absolutly deadly if ingested. Even though its roots can be used to counteract the effet of Ranunculus thora which gave the name “anti-thora”.
Aconitum napellus (subsp. napellus) Aconit napel, Casque de Jupiter, Tue-loup bleu Aconite, Wolfsbane, Monk’s blood
This one is considered as being one of the most dangerous poison of Europe. It’s also one of the oldest poison used by humans. In the Middle Age, healers prescribed it to those who were accused of being werewolves. Death after ingestion is almost instantaneous with motor weakness, tingling and numbness in the limbs, ventricular arrythmias, paralysis of the heart. The only post-mortem signs are asphyxia. Poisoning can even happen while handling the plant.
Aconitum lycoctonum (subsp. vulparia) Aconit tue-loup, Aconit de Naples Northern wolfsbane
Once used to poison foxes and wolves (hence the name), this plant has the same effect than Aconitum napellus and is often found next to it. It’s native of the Eurasian mountains.
Mandragora officinalis Mandragore Mandrake This plant is native of the Mediterranean basin. Its root and leaves are particularly poisonous and in sufficient quantities, it can cause hallucinogenic and narcotic effect and even delirium.
Sorbus aucuparia Sorbier des oiseleurs Rowan, Mountain-ash While not highly toxic, it is advised against consuming in large amounts. The fruits contain particularly a parasorbic acid and the seeds, a glycoside toxic.
My favorite dumb husbands in very accurate Halloween costumes. <3

The Mystical World Of Mushrooms Captured In Photos
Most people consider mushrooms to be the small, ugly cousins of the plant kingdom, but theirs is surprisingly beautiful and wonderful world waiting to be explored. These beautiful mushrooms, captured by enthusiastic nature photographers, are a far cry from the ones you find in the woods or your local grocery store.
Most mushrooms, as we know them, are actually just the reproductive structure of the fungus they belong to – their fungal networks expand far further underground, and some fungi don’t even sprout the sort of mushrooms that we’re used to seeing. In fact, depending on your definition of “organism,” the largest living organism in the world is a fungus – there’s a honey mushroom colony in Oregon that occupies about 2,000 acres of land!
