new year's day brunch.
if the lazy pace and laughs at this half-past noon brunch we had on new year's day are any indicator of the coming year, I think 2014's gonna be a good one. our ten guests went around sharing their best memories from 2013 and plans for 2014; it was a beautiful meal full of reflection and hope.
thank you to our friend ruthie, who so graciously opened up her beautiful home to us, to liza anne for playing us a few of her beautiful new songs, to mikaelahamilton for another set of incredible photos that allow us to savor these moments around the table forever. to see the day's full set of photos in all their glory, visit our flickr album. here are some highlights:
meet the team.
this time last year we were hosting our very first common table gathering: a christmas brunch. started as somewhat of a hopeful experiment, by the end of that first meal, we felt that these gatherings we’d been dreaming of had true potential to foster something beautiful, heart-warming and inspiring for others. our vision has always been to extend what we already believe to be good about nashville: it is a city full of individuals who value authentic community and experiences. by creating our gatherings to reflect these values, authentic experiences have been born full of divine cuisine, belly laughs, late night story-telling and deep sighs of thankfulness for the reminder that “we gotta good thing goin’” in nashville, tennessee.
we are artists, we are place setters, but we are first and foremost, advocates and celebrators of life around the table. we hope those who have attended and will attend in 2014 are reminded that shared, slow and thoughtful meals with friends feed our souls and are worth making time for, if not planned on twice monthly (or weekly).
rediscover the freedom to wake up late on a saturday and ask your neighbors if they like spinach omelettes & rye toast. serve brunch on your too-small table with your mismatched dinnerware. enjoy it without a to-do list to follow. I promise it has never not been worth it.
as our gatherings have evolved, each featuring a new host home, unique group of guests and creative detail, our steadfast team has been in the background putting the pieces together. today it is an honor to finally introduce ourselves:
simoni kigweba, chef & co-founder
simoni hails from memphis, tn with roots in burundi, africa. he grew up with a love for cooking, but started taking his passion seriously when he worked for a restaurant in fayetteville, ak during college. a hop and skip later, he now cooks full-time at josephine’s - a new upscale hot spot in nashville’s 12 south neighborhood.
simoni lives, breathes & evangelizes the art of food + community. every gathering’s menu is thoughtfully themed; the time, care and detail put into developing each dish can be culminated by the “who are you, really?” question that follows. simoni & cadence’s friendship was setup two summers ago by a mutual friend based solely on their shared passion for good food and community. they’ve been dreamin’ and schemin’ since, hosting their first common table gathering together in december 2012.
cadence turpin, facilitor & co-founder
cadence is originally from atlanta, ga, but traveled around before coasting in happily to nashville, tn. if you asked her why, she’d invite you over for dinner with her friends. she takes deep pride in nashville’s community and is a natural celebrator of most things communal, artful and delicious. a writer & community builder by trade, you can find her telling stories & bringin’ people together full-time at nashville rescue mission and WELD nashville.
when it comes to common table, cadence is the brains outside the kitchen (although she claims to have a world-class taste-testing palette). she works with simoni & the team to cast vision for each gathering, delegating tasks and seeing through the details to make sure the table is set to foster a memorable community experience. she’s somehow tricked various of her super-ridiculously-awesome friends to help her, making each gathering a fun bonding experience & team effort.
mikaela steinwedell, photo + videographer, creative contributor
the real question is, “what doesn’t mikaela do?” no seriously, we’re all still trying to answer that - let us know if you find something. for common table, mikaela captures the visual experience so that we can reminisce and help tell our story better. mikaela shares the rest of our team’s passion for the nashville community (and simoni’s cooking), making her an integral addition to our creative-planning process. she is forever full of brilliant ideas, and we treasure the moments she’s been capturing for us since spring.
outside of common table, we believe mikaela is one of the most talented photographers in town. she comes to us from austin, texas, which helps explain her painfully effortless coolness. she’s also been wow-ing us with recent explorations into videography and as a skilled musician in her musical side project, traveller. she will also cut your hair and make you a mean hot bourbon cocoa. mikaela: the jill of all trades.
chris cole, drinksmith & creative contributor
chris is our resident cocktail genius. originally from forth worth, tx, he moved to nashville to attend vanderbilt university and never left because listen up: nashville needs chris cole. as co-founder of everly, an innovative drink mix company, chris excels in all things sipped. he began exploring the craft of mixology a couple years ago as a hobby and continues to be the go-to guy in our circle of friends when you need a good drink. he works with simoni before each gathering to creatively mastermind the perfect pairings. he is a priceless well of creative ideas on our team.
chris should also be getting paid commission by the city: he’s been a key player in buttering-up nashville for many of its now-residents and is consistently bringing people together for the fun of it. his passion for inclusiveness and genuine love for serving people is evident even from behind the bar. to chris! (a virtual toast.)
beyond this core team, there have been several other volunteered hands, hosts and talents that have gone into making common table a worthy adventure. we are incredibly thankful for these friends and hope to showcase more of them in the future.
until then, hi! so nice meeting you. thanks for dropping in and reading more about us. we hope to see you ‘round the table soon enough.

gathering two: dine & dance.
our second common table gathering was dinner, taking place on satuday, february 23rd in our dear ol' 12 south neighborhood. chef kigweba's theme for the meal was "of the air" or maybe better known by our guests as the duck feast--the really incredible, dannng-this-is-good, five course duck feast.
at sunset, our ten guests drifted in, appeasing their appetites with slices of homemade duck-fat bread & locally-made apple butter.
before long, chairs were being pulled and first course was making its way out of the kitchen. conversation and laughter blossomed & grew throughout the evening as old and new friends connected dots, shared stories and told a few good jokes.
course 1: frisee salad with pickled veggies, fresh cherry tomatoes & duck fat vinaigrette
drink pairing: the mata hari by our drinksmith, chris.
course 2: duck fat fingerling potatoes topped with a aromatic herb medley
course 3: duck confit over mushroom ragu, topped with watercress
drink pairing: medium, silky (and bottomless) pinot noir.
course 4: roasted duck breast with parsnip tart, roasted carrots & orange bernaise
course 5: banana mousse over an olive & sinclair dark chocolate truffle with espresso nibs
drink pairing: french-pressed & local, our neighbor roast inc.'s brazil blend coffee. (note: there may or may not have been an encore round of cocktails that followed.)
surprise guest: jillian edwards chapman, who played us a few new songs to make desert a little sweeter.
this gathering didn't end at the table. after awhile of invited lingering, our guests decided dancing was the only acceptable way to put this evening to rest. (we agreed.) so, the whole lot of us ventured out to dance the night away and relish the warmth, whimsy and company the day had gifted us with. it was an evening that will be hard to forget, the first prized memory created in 2013's memoir for both common table & several of our guests.
thank you to our guests and jillian for creating something special around the table that night that echoes a story of something much grander and more beautiful than just a spread of delicious food & drinks. the community we saw unfold and outbursts of laughter we heard from the kitchen are exactly why we do this.
next up: april 20th on the porch! details coming soon. but, the hat is open!
creating beautiful memories.
"What happens during meals shapes a large part of our memories. As we grow older we forget many things, but we mostly remember the Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners in our families. We remember them with joy and gratitude or with sadness and anger. They remind us of the peace that existed in our homes or the conflicts that never seemed to get resolved. These special moments around the table stand out as vivid reminders of the quality of our lives together.
Today fast-food services and TV dinners have made common meals less and less central. But what will there be to remember when we no longer come together around the table to share a meal? Maybe we will have fewer painful memories, but will we have any joyful ones? Can we make the table a hospitable place, inviting us to kindness, gentleness, joy, and peace and creating beautiful memories?"
- Henri Nouwen

-team common table
*we happily provide a vegetarian substitution for all of our gatherings, please feel free to email us at [email protected] to request this altered menu.
gathering one: holiday brunch
we hosted common table's first official gathering on the second weekend of december, right in the heart of the christmas season. it's a time of year we often can't seem to stop running from place-to-place or writing down to-do lists, and yet it's a time of year we need most to pause.
it would be a shame to roll through the season without letting ourselves stay wrapped up in our comforters on a saturday for just a little bit longer than intended, with no morning plans to drag us up, only books to read and records to play.
so we chose a holiday brunch. for brunch, by very nature, seems to suggest to take the morning slowly, to arrive hungry and rested, with an unspoken willingness to tarry. and we're for that.
[the meal]
chef's centerpiece & theme for this meal: the potato. (a remnant of chef kigweba's earliest culinary experimentation, also symbolic of this meal's hearty and earthy-inspired cuisine).
coffee pairing: homemade, multiple serving-sized cinnamon rolls to share family style
first course (pictured above): red creamer potato with mousse + mushroom ragout, topped with salmon caviar
second course: poached egg over gnocchi with broth + cippolini
last course: clafoutis (a french baked dessert featuring cherry, custard-like batter)
[drink flight]
starter: stumptown coffee's ethiopia nano challa blend, chemex-brewed by barista josh
first pairing: classic mimosa with orange peel twist by our drinksmith, chris
second pairing: christmas in a cup. apple sage whiskey ale garnished with cinnamon baked apple peel. yep, just as magical as it sounds. chris wow-ed us big time.
last pairing: uno mas cafe, por favor!
below: the mastermind, chef kigweba, putting final touches on the first course.
we found that these words by j.r.r. tolkien captured the hope in this gathering wonderfully:
"if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world."
we're abundantly thankful for these very first guests, who gathered around the table and let us trial run this baby with no questions asked. your joy left us full.
our team's been creatively scheming since, and we're excited to serve a new ten of you in february. details to follow soon!
