Byatoke
The iro and buba came into prominence in the early 1950s. The concept of a top and a wrapper is very popular all across the African continent, it goes by different names depending on the region and material used for the style. However, the particular style of Iro and Buba is very near and dear to the modern Yoruba culture. The Lagos party scene helped in popularizing the style across Nigeria and Africa at large. Lagos state being the commercial hub of Nigeria is foremost in its fashion. In fact the Iro was worn as a mini-skirt back then, as a symbol of the liberation of women. At some point, however, the style became seen by young women as “old”. Byatoke seeks to re-introducing the classic Iro and Buba in a more modernized style to appeal to the younger generation who see it as what their moms or Aunty’s wear. Byatoke seems to change the narrative and let younger women feel both beautiful, classy and elegant in their set. Over the years there has been an evolution of the Iro and Buba and I wish for Byatoke to form part of the brands that desires to keep this classic beautiful garment alive for generations to come.
