Pharrell is a Genius

Pharrell is probably the only artist that could do this...

and he did...

His new single "Happy" has a series of 24 videos, each an hour long, titled for each hour of the day.  Each video is a repeat of the song, with the same single-shot dancing scene in a continuous story-line of sorts with different dancers (or whatever else they wanted to shoot at the time).

This song is so catchy... I would go to, or host, a 24-hour party where it was just these videos playing back to back.  In fact, I'm honestly considering organizing this.

As someone who can barely remember my own name, much less anyone else’s, I totally understand where this comes from. Sometimes to remember even tho most simple things I have to draw an image of it and look at it for a little while. This seems like it could be a great way to work on it remembering people better.

Single Page Apps

I've always wondered (always = within the past month) how sites like Facebook and Instagram update the URL on their site without actually navigating away to another page.

In my mind this wasn't possible, and the insanely talented engineers at Facebook just out-class me so much that they can get the entirety of the Facebook application to navigate to another page without interrupting the chat interface/functionality.  But c'mon, no one's that good.

Okay, in all honesty, that may be true still... as i'm not sure exactly what they do.  but I did find some new functionality on Lee Crossley's blog that I think might explain it: http://ilee.co.uk/changing-url-without-page-refresh/

Pretty much you can now (in modern browsers) push a history state that updates the URL and browser history without ever reloading the page.  This is a big win for SPAs because now we don't rely entirely on changing the Hash in the URL.  

Some people may say, "But Cornelius, why doth that matter at all?  Isn't changing the page by Hash the same as changing the page by URL for SPAs?"  I would say to these people that sure, it's the same in some cases.  

An example though of where this is an issue is when you get into authenticated gateways that proxy traffic through to your site.  Say a user isn't logged in, and they try to navigate to yoursite.com/SomeApp/#Page3, they would then be redirected to your login page.  Once they log in, where would the be sent?  The server would only know about "yoursite.com/SomeApp/" since the Hash doesn't ever make it to the server... so the user will have to manually go to whatever "Page3" is on their own.

Long story short, this is awesome... let's all use it and make more SPAs and make the world a happier place :)
