i love this photo because at first you think that she was going to get married but instead her husband to be left her, or something like that. but actually its quite the opposite. i clicked on the source and it brought me to an article explaining the story behind this photo, and shes not crying, shes hungover. her and her husband went to a football game on their wedding day, and got extremely drunk and partied all night. they took the subway home because they couldn’t drive. so no, its not a sad heartbreaking story, its a crazy joyful one. which in my opinion makes the picture even more amazing.

playing around w. microsoft office as a child was crazy. it felt transgressive. magical. a portal into the beautiful world of business. i imagined myself one day becoming proficient with every menu in excel and word and powerpoint, expertly choosing between them in a manner similar to a samurai deciding on whether to use the wakizashi or the katana. like stepping into the tabernacle without genuflecting. the sensual mystique of the coffee room. an entire imaginary world of grey-blue carpeted hallways and black plastic caster wheels on chairs. the bright ideas of the future, all springing to life as i am assisted by a paperclip shaped homunculus. slayer of demons of profit loss. the holy armor of the suit and tie. the will of god channeled through commerce. kneeling to the invisible hand, and transcribing its will into an infinite scroll of beautiful white pages.

It was massively popular. It billed itself as a new kind of church. Then sexual abuse and misconduct allegations surfaced against its leaders

Of course, not all megachurches have imploded in scandal, but the casual and informal framing of new churches has, paradoxically, made it easier for some leaders to abuse their power and hide their wrongdoing. Perhaps the exponential growth and size of these institutions are part of the problem and allow harmful behaviours and relationships to flourish in the shadows of the church. The Meeting House and the entire evangelical movement are being forced to confront their failure in living up to their ambitious visions for their role in society. “We’ve come to understand,” says interim senior pastor Bokma, “that there are layers of unhealthy culture that we are working to address.”
