A Study in Pink — Pilot and Episode One
Look at the slo-mo. For me, that’s the kicker.
AS WE ALL KNOW: Pilot!John and Pilot!Sherlock are only about 1.5 hours away from fucking in that last gif on the left. Like, that’s two dudes who just got done with a really great date, and now they’re going to go get a nightcap, but they both know they’re gonna end up in bed after that. They never even got a chance to need that second bedroom in Baker Street. These two sweet little lambs are currently married, and have been for years.
MEANWHILE: The two assholes we’re stuck with live in this hyper-stylized world where they look at each other and the rest of the world blurs away into color and shape and the only real, solid thing for each of them is the other one. Everything slows down, the music swells, and they look at each other as if they’re not convinced the other one’s quite real. It’s epic. It’s The Hero Shot. And it’s quite frankly shockingly romantic in a way the Pilot shot isn’t.
But it’s also letting us know that, unlike that successful first date we saw in the Pilot, the real thing’s gonna play out SLOOOOOWLY.

a couple of months ago i was reading this book for my lgbt+ american history and literature class called The Beautiful Room is Empty by Edmund White, which is a semi-autobiographical book about a gay man growing up in the 50s and 60s (and it’s also really really good). but as i was trying to read it in peace i stumbled upon this line that just stopped me because i knew it, and i just sat there like ‘what the fuck’ before realizing why i recognized it:
“But for me, the tuxedos (which depersonalize waiters and lend distinction to friends)…”
here’s the paragraph in full
and i realized that it’s almost identical to one of sherlock’s lines in the empty hearse
and i was like oh my god MARK and it was bothering me for months because i researched it to see if maybe both sources were referencing something else altogether but i couldn’t find anything. and so finally this past sunday at the sherlocked con, i was like ‘shit i never asked mark about that book’ and i looked over and there was no one in line for an autograph from him so i went over and asked the woman next to him if i could take a few minutes to ask him a question
and she said yes and so i started telling him this whole story and it was really sweet because when i asked him if he’d read the book he was like “of course i have :)” like genuinely happy to be talking about this book and possibly to realize what i was bringing up
and i told him about how i’d recognized it and realized what it was and i was about to say ‘because it’s in the empty hearse!’ and he cut me off and said ‘it’s the line about the waiter’ and i was like ‘!!! yeah!’ and he started reciting the line with me like. saying it right behind him and i got so excited to have that finally answered, because i mean he just straight up told me that he referenced THAT quote in THAT SCENE
so um. he Did That thanks for coming to my talk
Is Sherlock cool or a dork? No third option
Yes he’s cool
No he’s a dork
Like the gay guy who makes the Pope's shoes
the essence of johnlock is that the watson character has settled sustainably, tho unhappily, into heteronormative life when he meets the holmes character, while the holmes character has entirely rejected the task trying to pass as heterosexual/normatively masculine/neurotypical, so in a certain sense he’s freer than the watson but in another sense he’s even more isolated and lonely bc his abnormality makes him a social outcast. & then over the course of their relationship watson becomes more comfortable w himself and holmes becomes more emotionally open and less isolated. it’s like they have to be Freed from the two contrasting pitfalls that queer people trying to survive in normative society often fall into & the key to both of their escapes is each other
