12/09/19 9:20pm | I’ve had three days off work due to being sick and to be honest it has been so difficult to not feel guilty if I wasn’t connected to my work phone or emails 24/7. I knew I wasn’t going to get any better if I didn’t rest (and I mean actually, properly rest), but I felt so guilty that I wasn’t doing a thousand things like I normally do. Which, logically, is silly - why should I be so afraid of doing nothing? However considering the fact that I value my productivity and performance so much, it makes a lot of sense that I feel bad or guilty or ashamed of not completing my normal work load, even when I’m on sick leave.
I ended up letting myself rest and it was marvellous. I feel quite a bit better and I’m going back to work tomorrow. Let this serve as a reminder to you that your value is not based on your productivity or results. Allow yourself to have a break, even a short one, with no guilt, no distractions, just you. It’ll do you the world of good 🌞
types of healthy coping skills
1. self-soothing
comforting yourself through the 5 senses
Touch: stuffed animals, stress balls, taking a bath, a soft blanket
Hear: music, audio book, guided relaxation
See: snow globe, glitter, calming images, art, anything that pleases you visually
Taste: tea, mints, gum
Smell: lotion, candles, incense
2. distraction
removing your focus from the stressor for a period of time
puzzles, art, crafting, reading, movies, gaming, exercise, being social
3. opposite action
doing the opposite of the impulse that aligns with a positive emotion
affirmations, inspiration, lighthearted and encouraging focus
4. emotional awareness
identifying and constructively expressing what you’re feeling
journaling, listing emotions, using a emotional identification chart, drawing, therapy
5. mindfulness
centering and anchoring yourself to the present moment
meditation, guided relaxation, yoga, breathing exercises, candle gazing, going for a walk
6. ask for help
this is important to do when you feel like your coping skills are not enough or they are too negative and detrimental
therapy is ideal for helping a person create a healthy coping strategy and incorporate it into their life
*a coping skill is considered healthy if it helps you to deal with stress more positively, does not hinder your progress, and isn’t harmful physically or mentally. A coping skill can become negative when it is used to completely avoid dealing with the stressor.

Struggling to stay awake (and not distracted) so that I can study for midterms!
10.24.19// some geometry work for the day🌤️
important tip: if you think a subject is easy, still try to put in 100% effort and pay attention in class, because then it’ll make the harder work later on much easier, also don’t forget to take care of yourself xx <3

I’m going to start a ‘journal’ for my bachelor thesis process to see how I’m going to do over a longer period of time. Another post about it is going to be uploaded soon. Let me just say that I finally feel ready for doing this. My student exchange has given me tools to work on such a long paper and completely in English, plus some research papers have been published this year which turn out to be very useful. Cheers to graduating before the end of this year!

9.16 basically this week’s productivity ; I put way more effort into this picture than I’m willing to admit of but hey, I put in the work so I can be as proud of it as I want :) also I don’t think I showed my new study space bc college so here it is!!
March 2017 | Currently at home trying to power through three pieces of coursework before I can start revising (!) and v much missing having a giant desk surrounded by maps to spread my work (and other paraphernalia) across.
I have constantly million old pics on my phone… often I’m afraid of publishing them, or I’m just “too buzy” (this mean that I find something completely unnecessary that I absolutely “MUST” do) to do it… and the final result is a little me covered in photos that I don’t know what to do with. So… I’m gonna stop this! It’s the moment to get courage and “jump” with decision in a new direcion! … Say “hello” to my little parrot friend!!! ♡

how to avoid education burnout
have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didn’t accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because they’re my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasn’t able to finish during the week.
recognize when you’re at your emotional limits: forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically: take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments: go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand: it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you don’t become overwhelmed.
learn how to ask for help: it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies: you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you don’t lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time: it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.
I spent way too much time staring at the trees outside my window 🍂🍂🍂

September is Suicide Prevention Month, and we’ve created free resources to download and share. Here’s our self-care guide, to help you during the back to school season with tips on how to practice self-care at home, at school, and in public.
One supportive person can prevent suicide. Communicating and connecting about suicide can be the first step towards empowering LGBTQ youth to get the care they need. We can all show LGBTQ youth that they are welcome, they are loved, and they deserve support.
