Dad had always been a heavy smoker and drinker. He always said that I would grow up to be like him, but I always worked out and tried to stay healthy. We did have a good bond though, watching sports on the TV was what brought us together every night.
One night, I talked to dad about his smoking, saying that he was smoking a lot. He told me that I should stop moaning unless I'd actually tried it. What he didn't know was that I'd actually tried it a few times with mates in college.
A beer later, dad suggested that I just try a cigarette. I was a bit hesitant, but I'd been secretly wanting one for a while now.
Dad smiled as I smoked with him. I felt a bit of relief, but I planned to just have a couple and then quit. I was still health conscious and wanted to do well in my sports studies at college.
Dad and I enjoyed our evenings together. It became a bit of a ritual, watching TV, drinking beer and smoking. I must admit, I've started to get a bit lazy and my grades are slipping, maybe I'll stop smoking and get back to working hard? Not tonight though, I'm having a good time with dad.
I never did manage to stop smoking, in fact I've ended up smoking more. I did pass my sports studies course, just, but never ended up using it. I ended up as a delivery driver with my own van. It is a decent enough job but the temptation to smoke all day and night is growing. I've got some tattoos now, which dad suggested I get. He's so proud of me.
Working all day means that I hardly go the gym any more and I've decided to grow my beard a bit too. I think I've put on a a bit of weight, I don't mind though really. I'm just enjoying myself.
I remember a few years ago my dad saying that I'd end up just like him. I looked in the mirror today and saw myself. Fat, lazy and totally addicted to smoking. I'm happy, but I guess he knew me better than I knew myself.
