Girliness Makes me Smile
I’d be lying if I claimed that I’m only happy when I’m girly. Life in general offers opportunities for me to have happiness, whether I’m girly, neutral, or more boyish. But, I can also say that girliness provides a happiness that makes me smile in a way that is different. I don’t think I’m prepared in my mind to explain how exactly that is. I just know it’s true. At least part of the reason for that is by letting go of the constraining idea that boys can’t be feminine.
Last night, my son saw a boy in a restaurant who had on two hats. He was a bit quizzical about that. Thankfully, he didn’t make fun of him or joke about it. What made me smile though, was that his confusion flipped around to simply say, “Well, if he wants to wear two hats, I’m sure it’s because he likes it.” It’s stuff like that which I see in young people (i see it in kids other than my own too), that makes me happy for the generations of girly boys that come after me. People aren’t just becoming accepting, they’re beginning to let go of the idea that certain looks, demeanor, clothing, etc. really matter. They’re beginning to let people live out their own authenticity. And THAT, certainly makes me smile.
My dear friends, you know that I love you and appreciate you. I wish happiness for you. I wish for you that you and all people around you can let go of any idea that says that boys can’t be feminine.

My children make me smile. Reading this over again, made me happy for who they are and are becoming.
