Day 11 - 15 August 2019 (KHD)
Dear All,
The last day before the one-day weekend and the weather became even more ridiculously hot. It was 41 in the shade in Cairo. This was hotter, and there was no shade anyway. Probably over 50 in the sun. My tan is coming along nicely…at least the bits that are not bright pink!
We said goodbye to Sara today (see pics) who is back off to Tanta.
We also said farewell to our workers (see pics) as we can no longer afford to keep them. So if you want to sponsor a worker they are five pounds sterling a day to hire, and we use a set of 12 of them!
Team Bones managed to get through all the remains that were have been exposed this week, including the seemingly endless G1102 that contained perhaps three individuals (and was a real head scratcher to tie together…a bit like a jigsaw with half the pieces missing and no picture on the box!) while the seemingly tireless Am Yasin and company found a few more burial cuts, that look like slight color changes in the sand but that when dug down a metre or so reveal themselves to contain a burial that hasn’t seen the light of day for over five thousand years…it’s quite a skill, really.
As I write this the muezzins are starting up in the mosques, and sunset is bathing the Delta in a rosy glow. We are aching and burnt and sore and knackered and dehydrated and starving and covered in dust and with sprained backs and legs and feet, and with blisters and bug bites. In other words, we are happy archaeologists!

Day 8 12th August 2019 (KHD)
Today the members of the team dispersed around Cairo taking care of various tasks.
Loris decided he was going to be very sensible and do much writing for his forthcoming book. Make sure you buy it!
Tish and Larry went to the Islamic City and looked at all lines of lovely architecture.
We went to the Museum and were humiliated by Loris who took us around and scolded us for not knowing more about ancient pharaohs.
Later we decamped back to the site. We are now getting ourselves sorted out and welcoming our new colleague and associate, Sara Ebrahim, who will be working with us on burials tomorrow.
Day 7 (KHD TEAM)
Off to mediaeval Cairo tomorrow, then the Khan el Khalili market. Also the Citadel!
Will be scooping up a colleague (Sara) and taking her back to the dig house, where burials await in the field for us on Tuesday!
Can hardly wait!
Day 7 Touring El Giza, Egypt
Today, Joris, Tish, Bear, and I went to the Pyramids of Giza!
Amazing to think these pyramids weren’t even thought of when our site was being developed.
The swarms of tourists weren’t as bad as we feared luckily. We got in with our special Heritage IDs. We had an intricate tour of the site from Joris, who i an expert on this period and heard that the level of huge scandal that was going on in the 4th Dynasty just beats anything we can do, hands down. Dynasty/Dallas with extra incest!
Day 7 11th August 2019 (KHD): The Team takes a trip on a rare day off
Panoramic views of the Great Pyramids of Giza
Minion doesn’t get a day off!
Kafr Hassan Dawood (KHD): Day One - 4 August 2019
Hello to all from the Delta!
Yes we made it and we are here in our rural splendour, all set to start work…except for our own Jo Rowland who has taken poorly and is thus out of commission for the moment :-(
Nevertheless we do have Joris and myself and Omar and his team from Luxor plus a group of local chaps who are all set to start clearing the sand for us! I am going to be assessing some Late Period burials that were excavated earlier in the year by our colleague team who also works in the area, and we are looking forward to the arrival of the Dig Baby (Letitia Service) later in the week!
All of us are very excited - the site looks terribly innocuous but we know that there is a strip of sand maybe 20 x 10 metres in size that contains this most important of all predynastic and early dynastic sites, so we can’t wait to get going and to see what wonders await us! There isn’t anything to show you yet other than these general views - but watch this space and let’s see what we can do!
A big thank you again to all those who helped us get here!
Lawrence & the KHD Team
Day Two 5th August 2019 (KHD)
Salaam aleikum everybody!
I am trying to get back to my Arabic roots and it’s not great…although I do have a galabiyeh (see attached) so it’s a start at least! The day has been astoundingly hot - we are working in a deep pit so that all the breeze doesn’t reach us. It’s like being in a microwave. We are mapping and recording Late Period burials on behalf of some colleagues who work here, while the workers and Joris are starting to strip back the sand on the main site (see attached). The LP burials are a real challenge but loads of information is coming off them - we should be done by tomorrow or the day after at the latest. The locals have discovered us and we are the most exciting thing to happen here since…well, whenever, actually. A squadron of kids arrived and proceeded up the garden path (see attached), full of giggles, to gravely shake hands with us all and take selfies and then run away squealing. Seems Jo (who looks a little like a romantic heroine now she’s off her bed of sickness) and me (just too large to be real) are highly diverting…! Lets see how they get used to us over coming weeks :-)
