Perception and perspective are two different ways of understanding the world.

“We all look at the world through our own perception,” is a common saying. Your perception is your reality, and I have heard this from many people throughout my life. Surprisingly, this statement never bothered me, and I agree with it. Let’s delve deeper into this concept.

Perception is your interpretation of the world around you. It is unique to you and no one else can truly understand it. Similarly, I can never truly understand another person’s perception. There is no advantage to your perception; it doesn’t allow you to connect with others or see a situation objectively. This is why people argue so much; they desperately try to convince others of their own perception, which is impossible.

Perspective, on the other hand, is observing the world from outside yourself. It’s like sitting in the seat of the person opposite you. This is how connection, compromise, and change happen.

When you shift out of your own perceptions and into someone else’s perspective, you’re thinking like them. You’re observing the world through their lenses, as best you can. This gives you an informational advantage or an opportunity to make a real impact on the world and others.

Once you start taking in perspective, you’re thinking like someone else while everyone else is stuck in their own perceptions.
