first post on here! i’m jesse, he/him, early 20s. i’m autistic and i never shut up about media i like so i made this blog for all my rants. maria ushiromiya deserves the world.
currently replaying the question arcs of Umineko. spoilers up to episode 4 will be here. please be careful! i don't wanna ruin anyone's experiences.
i think i'm gonna be taking another break, gotta sleep/eat/do other life stuff.
i do wanna thank everyone who's reading the liveblog still. i honestly wasn't expecting anyone to still be around after abandoning it for so long. but i'm really happy that people seem to be interested in what i'm saying. i'm having a lotta fun! and i hope you are all too!

nanjo seems dedicated to making sure this story sticks. also i gotta be honest, this whole time i've been assuming that 'person who takes kinzo's name' and 'person who is beatrice' (in this case, meaning the culprit) were one and the same. it occurs to me now that this isn't necessarily the case.
also, person number 3 in kinzo's study interacting with kinzo directly. so far, it's been kanon, nanjo, and shannon.

here's the thing: i don't think maria is stupid. that is, i don't think just anyone could walk up to her and go 'hey it's me, beatrice, the witch', and have her just believe it. from the scenes later on (in episode 4 i believe) i think it's made pretty clear that maria knows someone who is claiming to be beatrice. we see that she has notes from this person in her notebook. obviously, there's a lot of possibilities here. and i'm not gonna completely write off the idea that someone approached maria in disguise as beatrice. but right now, i'm going to make a theory:
whoever it is that approached maria in episode one and gave her the letter and umbrella is someone maria knows and is familiar with, and who maria recognizes as 'beatrice'. this could be someone who interacts with maria in disguise as 'beatrice', and has done so before. this could also be someone who maria refers to as beatrice, as a sort of codename or nickname. but i think this is more complicated than someone just throwing on a dress and handing her an umbrella and letter.
originally i thought rosa was embarrassed about maria saying it was beatrice who gave her the umbrella. but in retrospect, given that she knew a beatrice and then later watched said beatrice die, that's kinda fucking scary.

finding out who gave maria the umbrella and letter seems like a good first mystery for figuring out the culprit. (at least, until people start actually dropping dead.) the following groups have alibis for this time:
george, battler, and jessica: in the guesthouse, all corroborate each other. if we're going by the rules of fair play, we can assume george or jessica didn't dip halfway through and battler simply didn't mention it.
krauss, eva, hideyoshi, rudolf, kyrie: talking in (i believe still) the parlour. all vouch for each other. i'd be surprised if anyone in this group could leave and have the rest still vouch for them.
shannon and kumasawa: preparing guestrooms in the main mansion. kanon was with them at the beginning, but left.
we have a few people who don't have alibis now: gohda was alone in the kitchen making food. natsuhi was in her room resting. rosa was taking a nap on the couch. kanon was briefly away from shannon and kumasawa to fetch the kids in the guesthouse.
i'm actually not sure where genji was. krauss claims he went with him to call on kinzo, but he never made an appearance in the earlier scene with nanjo. is it possible he was the one inside with nanjo, playing chess? nanjo also doesn't have an alibi anymore, all things considered.
ooooooh shit nanjo just lied!! i think that's the first time that someone in this episode has explicitly said 'i was with kinzo'. that's interesting!
we now have two people who have been shown inside of kinzo's study, directly interacting with kinzo. we have a few explanations for how this can be happening:

b: the people in this scene are faking interacting with kinzo, for some reason. (possible for some things, like krauss knocking at the door*. but weird. and also, how would people have gotten in there in the first place? the only way to open the door is with the autolock and genji's key.)
c: we are watching a scene with someone who has taken the name of kinzo, as shown in episode 4. (possible, but tricky. we'd have to determine who's actually in the scene in that case. also, we'd have to ask why people aren't reacting to someone who is not actually kinzo ushiromiya walking around the island introducing themselves as kinzo.)

that's a funny way of putting it. in retrospect the number of death flags kinzo has in this episode is kinda funny. every other line someone turns to the camera and goes 'man kinzo sure is fucking dead huh'.

i had a few theories re the timing of kinzo throwing away the ring previously, and how someone could have found it outside. (my main theory at the time being that maria found it outside while looking for her rose, and brought it to 'beatrice'/gave it to 'beatrice' when she was given the umbrella and letter.) that's a bit of a moot point now, but i wonder if the timing of this scene is still important? especially seeing as we're soon gonna see the letter seal, which uses the ring.

this scene really startled me the first time i saw it, and it's definitely a hard watch still. but i think this scene is a major one for what i was talking about earlier with the ushiromiya family and the way violence and abuse is normalized in it.
battler has been away for 6 years, and is coming at this from the perspective of an outsider. but when he tries to speak up, rosa gets mad at him, and george (the 'adult' of the kids group and the mediator) justifies the situation to him. after all, one of the main things that distinguishes adults in the ushiromiya family is success in business and capitalism. maria won't be able to accomplish that with her 'bad habits'. and interfering is only making things worse for battler. battler just needs to accept this is how things are.
and that works. george convinces battler to back down and go to the guesthouse. and afterwards, they're just not gonna talk about it. that's for the best, right? that's the mature thing to do, right?
anyways, i'm gonna put a pin in this scene. at some point later there's another scene i want to compare it to.
if i'm remembering right, eva was able to find the answer to the epitaph by looking at it as a word game type of riddle. and at one point, she had to reference an encyclopedia. based on how she solved it, i'm guessing it's something that requires knowledge of japanese.
putting a copy of the translation for this version here too, just for my own reference. i don't think this is something i'll be able to solve just with the english version, though, and i have absolutely Zero knowledge of japanese. given the circumstances of the situation, i'd be very surprised if it turns out the answer to the epitaph led to somewhere outside of rokkenjima.
i think i'll have to put this specific mystery on the back burner for now.
