Severe weather delays several flights in and out of Clinton National

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Severe weather passing through Arkansas delayed Christmas travel for hundreds of people flying in and out of Clinton National Airport, on Wednesday. Lightning storms prevented several planes from landing at Little Rock’s airport, in addition to delays stemming from poor weather conditions at other US airports.

Most of the arrivals and departures delayed from LIT were delayed between 15 minutes and 1.5 hours. Only one flight was cancelled, but several connecting flights at other airports stranded some traveling from Little Rock at other airports around the country.

6 PIA Flights Delayed Owing To Unions’ Protest

As many as six PIA flights were delayed on Tuesday owing to protest by the unions, spokesman of the national flag carrier said in a statement here on Wednesday. He informed that the flights were delayed yesterday owing to the `industrial dispute’- protest by the PIA’s unions.

`Due to industrial dispute (protest by PIA unions) six PIA flights were delayed yesterday as protesters entered the main data center at PIA headquarters pulling out cables and shutting down computer systems’, the spokesman said.

Due to this, PIA’s entire system remained suspended for nearly three hours, he added.

Airlines must pay for delays

Airlines have paid passengers total compensation of around VND10 billion (US$450,000) since July for delayed flights after the Ministry of Transport issued a circular making such fines mandatory.

According to the Viet Nam Aviation Authority, the rate of delayed and postponed flights during the period was 15 – 20 per cent.

“Ninety per cent of delayed flights is because of aircraft coming back late and 5 per cent is because of technical faults,” the Nguoi Lao Dong (Labourer) newspaper quoted Pham Vu Cuong, deputy director of HCM City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport Authority, as saying.

Delays caused by airport problems like waiting for passengers or traffic congestion are rare, at just 2 – 3 per cent, he said.

Several flights delayed due to Customs officers’ strike at BIA

A number of flights bound for Bejing, London, Lahore and Singapore were delayed due to a sudden strike launched by Customs officials on duty at the Bandaranaike International Airport, in protest against their baggage being checked by airport security officials.

Customs officials on duty at the BIA said that their baggage especially food items and beverages were subject to strict screening by the airport security officials.

One of the Customs officials on duty at the BIA on condition of anonymity told the Daily News that their food items and beverages were screened through the X ray machines installed at the Airport.

“Screening our foods and beverages through X ray machines is a health hazard,” he said

However, the strike was called off after a discussion with the authorities handling security at the Airport

Customs Spokesman Leslie Gamini when contacted by the Daily News confirmed that an incident had taken place at the BIA, but, refused to make any comment.

He said that the Customs Director General will make a formal statement over this incident later.

Firefighters had responded to reports of sparks flying from the engine of a plane that was taxiing at the airport.

However, they mistakenly doused the wrong plane with foam, which led to 30 flights being delayed.

The report of an engine problem had come from an Air China Boeing 737-800 plane bound for Beijing, but firefighters mistakenly doused a Fuzhou Airlines plane of the same make which had exhaust fumes billowing from its tail.

The emergency services eventually sprayed the right plane after the airport’s control tower told them of their mistake.

But the mistakenly sprayed plane did not take off for another ten hours while its engines were checked.

No one was injured in the incident.

Small mistake delayed 30 flights and left one plane grounded for 10 hours

WHEN crew members of a passenger plane reported sparks coming from an engine while taxiing at an airport in southern China, eight fire trucks responded within minutes.

But they covered the wrong plane with white foam.

The mistake at the Fuzhou city airport on Thursday was quickly amended and the firefighters turned their attention to the correct plane, but the other one — with passengers aboard — was delayed 10 hours and 30 flights were delayed in total, the airport said in a statement.

The Air China flight had reported the problems in a right-side engine of a Boeing 737-800 for a flight headed to Beijing.

By the time firefighters arrived four minutes later, engines were switched off.

However, a Fuzhou Airlines plane of the same make had exhaust fumes coming from its tail.

The firefighters sprayed the Fuzhou Airlines plane with foam until the airport’s control centre alerted them to the mistake, and then they sprayed the right plane, the airport said.

Fuzhou Airlines said its plane was covered with white foam and had to be towed away to check its engines. It took off about 10 hours later.

The airport apologised for the inconvenience.

China Airlines flight delayed at Changi Airport for more than 18 hours

SINGAPORE - Some 300 China Airlines passengers were left stranded at Changi Airport on Monday into Tuesday (Dec 8) after a mechanical glitch grounded their plane for more than 18 hours.

Flight CI745, bound for Taipei, was scheduled to depart at 2.05pm on Monday but left Singapore only at 10.53am on Tuesday.

This had a knock-on effect on other China Airlines flights to Taipei on Tuesday and caused them to also be delayed.

Flight CI752 was pushed back from 10.25am to 12.48pm, while Tuesday's flight CI745 left more than an hour late at 3.16pm.

Passengers on Monday's CI745 flight were asked to board, then leave the plane three times, Chinese evening paper Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The first delay was from 2.05pm to 2.45pm. After waiting for 45 minutes in the plane, passengers were asked to leave, a disgruntled customer told Wanbao.

They boarded again at around 5pm, waited for about an hour on the plane, and had to disembark again.

Several passengers, most of whom had bought travel insurance, then decided to take other flights.

Remaining passengers were given dinner vouchers, and boarded for a third time at 10pm. This attempt was also unsuccessful, and they were told to come back the next day.

More passengers then requested to change their flights.

Some passengers also refused to get on the delayed flight on Tuesday due to concerns about the plane's safety.

At least one asked to have his ticket refunded, Lianhe Zaobao reported.

A BWI flight bound for Chicago Tuesday morning was delayed when four people were removed from the plane, according to Maryland Transportation Authority police.

Officers removed three men and one woman from the plane while it was held at gate, missing a 6:30 a.m. departure, according to agency spokesman Sgt. Jonathan Green.

He said the flight crew determined to return to the gate, and officers removed passengers. "What prompted them, that's all part of the investigation right now," he said.

Green said no arrests have been made, but that the individuals were being interviewed. Several federal agencies are investigating the incident, and "to make sure the aircraft is safe," Green said.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports warned flights could again be affected with departures delayed and cancelled overnight because of air traffic restrictions.

Forecasters had predicted the fog would remain in northern and eastern areas of England and Wales into Tuesday morning but the Met Office has now removed its yellow weather warnings.

Heathrow Airport said on Twitter: "Following yesterday's heavy fog, the Met office has issued another fog warning for this morning. If you are due to fly today, please check your flight status with your airline before travelling to Heathrow."

Gatwick also tweeted: "There may be some disruption to flights due to the fog. Please check directly with your airline."

A Manchester Airport spokesman said: "Like much of the UK, Manchester Airport has been affected by the fog and low visibility over the past couple of days.

"There have been periods where conditions have improved, flights have landed as normal and we have been able to accept diverted flights from other airports experiencing the same issues. However it does look like the foggy conditions could remain throughout the morning, and we would ask customers to check with their airline about the status of their individual flight. "

It comes after some 129 flights - equivalent to 10% of departures - were cancelled at Heathrow on Monday because of air traffic restrictions caused by low visibility.

London City Airport was closed for flights until around 11am, while Gatwick, Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon, Glasgow, Belfast and Southampton airports were also affected.
