Your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing.
Fyodor Dostoevsky, Crime and Punishment (via mkikutt)
The destiny of man is no more than a chain of constantly renewable appetites, a yearning which never encounters its definitive satiation, an endless chase round and round on the wheel of imagined need and illusory satisfaction.
Schopenhauer
Today the expression “developing” could be more of a threat than a promise.
We leave the world as evil and stupid as we found it upon arriving.
Voltaire
True life is absent, we are not in the world.
Rimbaud
The most uncomfortable of guests is now at the door, Nihilism, is now here.
Nietzsche
Where is the life we have lost in living? Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge? Where is the knowledge we have lost in information? Twenty centuries of human history distances us from God and brings us closer to dust.
T.S. Eliot
Come to Dinner photographed by Tim Walker.
My perception of the world made me feel a more acute form of the strangeness of things. In the silence and immensity, each object was cut off by a knife, detached in the void, in limitless space, separated from other objects. By the very fact of being alone, without any link with the environment, it began to exist. I felt as if I had been thrown out of the world, outside life, as if I were a spectator of some endless, chaotic film in which I could not take part. I knew not how to reach for anything.
Michel Foucault (via redlipstickandinception)
human beings are most inclined to love the things that hurt them the most not because we are masochists by birth, but because we are taught from a young age that true love is going to, is supposed to, hurt you in ways you cannot fathom
Lorinda Ament, Masochism is a Learned Trait (via wnq-writers)
