Rotting flesh, it’s all you can smell, the only thing you hear when you pass zombie hordes, all you see is another person succumb to this cruel environment. Sometimes you truly believe your deep need for companionship wasn’t enough to have a will to live. If you had nobody to protect, to love, to stay alive for, then why were you still fighting?
You weren’t sure why, maybe it was because you deluded yourself into thinking that you’d make a connection with someone, or something.
Your head is filled to the brim with worried thoughts, too busy pondering about everything difficult in your life to notice the tall zombie that lunges at you from nowhere.
“Shit! get off!!” You shriek, mentally cursing at yourself for making noise that might lure in more zombies, this young looking one already managed to bite into your fore arm. At first, you’re ready to bash its head in with a spiked bat, but it doesn’t attack after the bite.
He just stands there? As you pause for a few moments, he seems repulsed, spiting out the flesh he managed to snatch between his teeth. His upset clicking as communication confuses you, is he disgusted with the taste of your flesh?
The taste is like a sour punch on his taste buds, even with his rotting tongue he can taste the acidity. It reminds him of the sour and sweet candy he’d eat when he was alive, but it seems to take a turn for the worst on his sensitive mouth in this life.
He sees you holding up the wooden weapon covered in dented nails, wondering if you’d try killing him now. He’s not entertained by the idea of regenerating his body for another month so he steps away, putting his hands up.
“Are you alive?” Your eyebrows are knitted with intense confusion, this zombie has some sort of mind, he’s not completely brain dead because he would’ve continued to attack you, especially with your weapon no longer raised.
“Alive?” He clicks in his own language, tilting his head like a confused dog. “What do you mean?” He chitters further, something you’re unable to understand at all.
“You’re not attacking, this is weird, really weird” You back up more, hesitant on what to do, should you explore this new found mystery or head back home? You choose home, you weren’t sure what type of rabies infested species this zombie might be but you think it’s safer to avoid it for now.
“Where are you going?” He questions, intrigued enough to your peaceful demeanor to follow you.
You don’t notice him tagging along until you leave the store you had entered in search of food.
“Are you going back to your home? Where do you live?” He’s interested in why you didn’t decide to hurt him, are you some sort of super-human? Too confident in your strength that you leave zombies alive? How cool would that be!
“Hey- you can’t follow me, I don’t care if you’re harmless, I don’t trust you” You notice him when he makes his presence known, you try to encourage him into going in the other direction.
“Go, look there’s more of your friends down there” You shove him slightly, a slight push to his upper back to lead him down the long road.
He clicks in confusion, something he feels more and more as he talks to you, those aren’t his friends, every-time he tries talking to them all they do is groan and grumble. They’re incapable of processing anything, unlike him!
You seem interesting, you talk to him! Nobody he’s tried chatting with ever respond back.
“Cmon buddy, really, I have to go” You usher him the other way, pointing at the horde once more, once you figured out he wouldn’t be leaving anytime soon you walk quicker than before, then jogging, and finally running in the end since he didn’t seem deterred.
He’s a little hurt that you didn’t want to chat with him, even though you’ve established him as a harmless zombie, but he gets over it faster than it came and follows you without your knowledge.
The journey from the town you planned to raid was hardly considered a trip, once he found out where you lived he engrained it in his head before leaving.
Maybe if he brought you some trinkets then you’d want to talk to him, bribery seemed reasonable in his head. You’d probably enjoy some food! That’s what he thinks you were looking for anyways.
It takes him a few hours but he’s able to collect a plethora of critters, squirrels and rabbits, this earth has become so infested with animals since zombies don’t have an interest in eating animals, only made with the craving for human flesh.
Wrapping them up neatly in a bag he brings it to your base, dropping them off, he even built up the confidence to knock before scampering off into the forest to see your reaction to the gift.
But seeing dead critters in a plastic bag isn’t exactly the most welcoming gift. At first, you’re convinced it’s a warning, some sort of threat to keep away, but who have you upset? You think you’ve would’ve preffered seeing a severed zombie limb rather than strangled rodents.
At first he believed that you liked his present, you’re inspecting it, spinning the bag in circles while staring through the thin plastic material, but instead of taking it inside while appreciating the gift, you dig a hole and bury the fuzzy corpses.
So you didn’t love it? Why would you bury it? He doesn’t understand..
It takes him weeks of dropping off different things to understand you don’t like dead things, nor food, and you don’t even like the clothes he brought!!
He’s a little too distracted about what the item is instead of using time to inspect the condition of each thing, the corpses reeked and hardly looked anything other than repulsive, the food was molding, and the clothes were so torn that they could be considered rags.
The shy zombie keeps himself busy, hiding from you but always trying to make you happy with little things. He’s content with this, until there’s a threat. Another human, you welcomed him in when he proved to be an honest and loyal individual after saving you from something.
He isn’t sure what that idiot saved you from since the two of you describe it as “the incident” rather than properly addressing it, it makes him frustrated knowing he wasn’t there for you. And this leech, is getting on his nerves.
Why does he get to cozy up to you so easily? Especially sleeping in the same room, he knows the cabin is pretty small but does he really have to sleep in the same room? He doesn’t care if it’s on the floor, it’s not fair!! It’s not fair at all!!!
So he decided to do something about it, hastily enough so you weren’t too emotional to the point where you’d mourn his disappearance, you’d get over him quickly, you had to.
The night is cold, you’re shivering even with the thick sheets you and your buddy had found in a few homes. You had stirred awake due to the discomfort of a full bladder, you’re tempted to just stay in bed and pee tomorrow morning but it’s too uncomfortable to stay in bed.
Begrudgingly, you get up and try not to hit every wall on your way to the bathroom, a designated bush used as a restroom, it’s conveniently a large one that wraps around into a circle, making the journey outside a little less frightening.
Before you can make it there, you hear a sound, a squelching sound that can only be described as crunchy yet wet sounding. Your nape hair stands up, rubbing the back of your neck helps soothe the gut feeling of danger. It was probably just an animal right?
Even though your stomach churns in all the wrong ways, and your skin grows goosebumps quicker than ever before in your life, you tread lightly to the sound, finding a zombie sinking its teeth into your partner. The man who saved you from a crowd of zombies in an alleyway.
He risked his life to save you, he didn’t have to, he didn’t need to, he could’ve ignored you and went on with his day, but he didn’t. He’s a good person, you’ve learned that with how attentive he is with you, making you breakfast and keeping a close ear to every worry you grow with this apocalypse.
A good man, your personal savior, is lying on the floor infront of you, and all you can do is freeze up in the same place, watching the zombie rip flesh from his throat, it was overkill, it was so aggressive you could feel today’s dinner sneak up your throat.
Why did he deserve to die? Why was this world so cruel? Why did it have to take away the only source of happiness you had. Your only reason to live in this apocalyptic world.
“Oh my god..” You finally choke out, sobbing as the realization finally hits, he’s dead, you couldn’t save him, unable to repay the favor he did of saving your life, it wasn’t possible to do the same for him. You’re too late.
The zombie’s head snaps up, he grows panicked. Fuck.. fuck fuck!! You weren’t meant to see this! You were supposed to be in bed! He hesitates to do anything, all he can do is swallow the human flesh he had just torn out, causing your face to contort into more disgust. Your cheeks puff up, burning tears brimming in your waterline.
His heart breaks into a million pieces seeing you scream out his name, too heart broken and lost to even realize the danger of letting your emotions control you when you’re infront of a monster.
He’d never hurt you, but what if it wasn’t him eating your friend, would you have really let it attack you next? You’ve just been standing here unable to look at the sight any further with your eyes tightly squeezed shut .
His heart aches thinking of how much you must’ve really connected with this person if you’d really die for him. He should’ve killed him sooner.
“I’m- sorry” He manages to spit out, crying as he attempts to apologize in your language, any chitter and chirps wouldn’t be useful in this situation. This past few weeks he’s been trying to learn human language and he hopes it’s enough to make you forgive him.
“I didn’t want you to see that” He avoids mentioning any words that remind you he took a life, but rather define it as something less important.
“What the fuck is wrong with you” You cry out even more, no longer caring if more zombies would hear you, this was the same one you saw weeks ago, the one that followed you. Has it developed some sort of obsession? Was this monster the one leaving dead things at your door?
“I like you! I feel… for you!” He grabs onto his chest, where his beating heart would be if he was alive, but he’s not, so all he can do is try to convince you that his feelings are real and alive. “His fault, too near you” He whispers, looking down at the corpse on the ground.
As soon as his cold dead hand tried caressing yours, you push him back, screaming and kicking about what he did. “You’re fucking sick!! You’re a killer, don’t you get that? You’re dead, you don’t feel anything” You spit out venomously, your sadness turning into anger, but your upset emotion quickly withdraws, turning back into loud cries for your savior.
“I feel for you!” He mimics his earlier words, his vocabulary probably limited from the lack of human contact, a small part of you wanted to know how he was so emotionally intelligent to insist he felt something for you.
He argues with you for another few minutes, adamant about showing his love, he had to show you what he meant, you couldn’t truly hate him right? He did this for you!
He just had to show you how much you meant to him, even if it meant locking you in your own cabin, now the home that you view as a prison.
