sorting through asks / drafts / old snark and revisiting panels that have caused some level of pain and come across this one, thinking to myself god the proportions are so out of whack isn't that so sad i - wait a minute
is that ... [tv hacker voice] ENHANCE
DID SHE ACTUALLY -
rachel deadass drew six fingers on hades (fine, whatever, happens to the best of us three-time eisner winning webcomic artists i guess) and then just. lazily erased the extra finger. and didn't even do it properly.
like YEAH we know she was writing the finale literal hours before it went up. we knew her buffer had run out and she was posting comics by the seat of her pants. but god the sheer fucking laziness and slapdashery is absolutely outstanding. it's actually almost impressive. this webcomic was limping on legs it didn't have and rachel was firing bullets into the ground complaining about how it was slowing her down.
my dad died this february (this story does get funnier) and we had the funeral last weekend (it DOES GET FUNNIER) and winter has been rough so not a lot of greenery / growth to be seen. and for some reason some of the flowers at the ceremony were just SUPER wilted like it was a rough day for plants.
so tell me why my friend. who shares distaste for lore olympus. tell me why she leaned over and murmured to me “damn it’s just like persephone’s decay thing for real” while pointing at the funeral flowers. and my dumbass had to pretend to be crying because i almost laughed out loud.
if that show actually goes through I will be fighting rachel smyth in the parking lot of a denny’s and i WILL be bringing a steel chair
coming in late to the beating of this dead horse but rachel’s latest sketches really prove a) she completely gave up on lore olympus, and b) she can only draw one thing always lmao
like this is visually stunning! far more effort than a solid 80% of her three time(?!) eisner winning webcomic! it’s also just the same fucking thing for the thousandth time
and normally i’m not one to yuck on an art style or preference because people are allowed to enjoy writing or drawing the same thing - that’s entirely their right and it’s her platform. but god, does this not reinforce the fact that rachel just drew her self inserts in gaudy clothes and then tried to insist it was accurate Greek mythology and we were all just haters.
in so many ways, rachel is so talented, and yet she categorically refuses to improve in any meaningful way. disappointing as hell.
was looking through my saved photos to make a post about something else and had to do a doubletake on this i do not know how i missed it but
amphitrite's hair ... someone sloppily added in that bit so that it covers her arms and the side of her body and i don't know why but also it looks so bad???
they didn't even bother to shade it or properly colour it in what happened here???
been wanting to make this post ever since the scene first hit and it took me ten years but here is I Am So Sick of Rachel Smyth's Shit part 5793648759
this is not the first time i've mentioned this, but rachel has handled the sexual assault of persephone (and the resulting consequences) so fucking poorly. one of the biggest issues i've always had with it is how rachel often uses the assault to provide a weird emotional subplot for persephone and hades; often, she recontextualizes a scene and the emotions within to give further ship fodder. this scene is one of those moments.
just to clarify what i mean here: in the original of this moment, back during the trial, hades had just overheard apollo speaking in such a way that hinted towards his rape of persephone. hades confronts persephone directly, and pushes her to admit that yes, apollo raped her when she first moved to olympus. doing so triggers hades' rage, and he proceeds to go titan form and try and murder apollo, at which point persephone is forced to calm him down because i don't know guys, whatever rachel was trying to do is left up to interpretation and prayer at this point.
in the direct context of the original scene, we don't see hades transform or persephone touching him like this; the scene fades out to show his transformation from a distance, and then he's just running buck wild through the hotel. the focus is on persephone pleading with hades to calm down, because she doesn't want him to hurt apollo. she's understandably fraught over having to talk about her assault when she least expects to, and being pushed to do so, and then she's got to calm hades from his meltdown because something something "feminism." the point is, the scene is pretty clear in how upset persephone is, even if it focuses more on hades' emotions.
much, much, much later, when hera is realizing she's a fertility goddess, persephone explains what happened when she made hades transformed - she describes it as "being on fire, but good." this immediately contradicts just how badly shaken persephone was in the original scene, but it also instantly clashes with how hera herself perceives her years with zeus; rather than being on fire, it seems to be utterly draining her. whether this was a deliberate choice by rachel to show the contrast between the two, or more likely just a fluke (i'm betting on the latter because i don't trust rachel to handle a verb correctly, much less a metaphor) the main takeaway is that persephone was happy to share her power, even accidentally, and the experience wasn't necessarily bad or upsetting. in the context, and how persephone explains the whole process, it almost comes across as a pleasurable moment; a kind of pre-sexual connection, unifying her and hades together.
but that's not how the original scene played out, and what the above picture is not showing is that persephone and hades were touching because he had forced her to reveal her rape. in the retelling, persephone is supplicating to hades and there's a charged element to it, but the original scene had persephone trying to initially send hades away because he panicked her so badly with the question.
so by using the phrase "on fire, but good," and using this image, rachel is sexualizing (or at the very least, whitewashing) the moment persephone is forced to talk about her assault. persephone never, and i mean never, gets to discuss what happened to her on her own terms; with the exception of her single therapy visit, every single time the rape is brought up, it's because persephone was forced to talk about it. hades is the only character (of course) to fly into the immediate extreme. it's an awful, jarring, triggering moment in the original setting, but rachel reuses it to emphasize the persephone / hades romance, and to sexualize it.
it's yet another reason the assault plotline just makes me so angry and unsettled. it's never meant to be handled kindly, or wrapped up gracefully; it's a hurdle for hades to overcome, and for persephone to have as a "challenge," while letting the actual emotion and consequences fall by the wayside.
I've actually changed my mind and have come to thank all of the people who spread big misconceptions about the Greek myths because that means when I talk and write about them accurately, I look smart and cool doing it, at least in my own head.
seeing these two side by side makes me want to shriek the downgrade in six years ... how do you fumble your own bag this badly
considering your issues with lore olympus, is the lore rekindled any better? it's the same plot, no?
fantastic question, i am going to write far too much in response!
in short: yes and no! but also no. with a little yes!
for those who haven't seen, genericpuff (and their background artist banshriek) are essentially "redoing" lore olympus, although that doesn't even begin to cover the work and talent they've put into rekindled. probably the best way i could explain it is they've taken the core pieces of lore olympus and actually given them depth and structure, with a plot that just scratches my brain so good uuugh please read rekindled if you haven't already
i've said this before, but arguably my biggest grievance with myth retellings - and absolutely the case here for lore olympus - is a complete lack of care or understanding of the core myth being "retold." someone who knows the myth, knows the importance and value it held and adheres to that in a retelling, will always be ten thousand times better suited to the story than the most awarded artist out there.
i could easily overlook the degrading art and the weird plot holes if rachel had bothered to do her research and show the original myth any kind of respect; instead, she goes out of her way from page one to disrespect the culture, history, and mythology the story of persephone is taken from. rachel sees these shiny pieces, but she doesn't know how to use them with depth or purpose, so ultimately, she just dresses them up and shoves them into the page. it's a shallow and pedantic story that uses familiar names and history, but never goes anywhere with them. genuinely, you could go to the first wattpad fic of a fourteen year old on the internet for the first time and find the same plot, and i'd argue the fourteen year old would do it better because at least they're excited about it!!!
i'll try not to spoil too much, and it is ongoing, but the way rekindled has taken the original plot and made it work is incredible. persephone's hidden rage, her complex feelings towards demeter, the hierarchy of the gods - all of that is displayed with far more tact, respect, and delight. it uses the basic plot of lore olympus, and the very basic structure, but the similarities end there, because there's depth and connection that never show up in rachel's work.
lore olympus often relied on surface level conversations and plots - it struggled to create intrigue, it couldn't really do secrets or plot reveals in an organic way. concepts of sexuality, feminism, toxic relationships, abuse, power, and systemic dysfunction were broached in the comic, but ultimately handled sloppily, or discarded entirely. this is not a comic where you're going to find a lot of nuance, or you can discuss the nature of a character and acknowledge they have levels to them - what you see is what you get, and what you get ... isn't very good.
rekindled adds a lot more to the characters, giving them meat for the readers to parse through. there's a reverence for the original myth that shows, there's clear research in how the dynamics work (hera inviting persephone to her home is not just hera asking for company, and genericpuff showed their work in a follow up post which made me so! happy!!!) this is a retelling that genuinely enjoys itself, and it's a pleasure to read it, because you know the work is being done. the artwork is gorgeous, naturally, but it's the clear work and delight both genericpuff and banshriek demonstrate, and how they've carved away all the unnecessary floss from the lo version.
it also goes to show that rachel - with all the money and accolades she got from lore olympus - could never do what genericpuff and banshriek are doing for free, on their own time. and that says a lot about her talent, but even more on lore rekindled.
me literally any time meg is so much as mentioned in lore rekindled
every time someone mentions the art quality in lore olympus i immediately default to the juxtaposition between these two panels
colour! nuance! depth! detail!!! both men have clear design choices and their rage is depicted both in their eye colouring and body languages! overlay texture is present but hasn’t yet reached “holy god turn up the transparency for the love of god” levels yet
literally looks like fanart made by someone who actively despises the series. ZERO depth, loss of details, that overlay is literally beating my ass in my own home it’s so overpowering.
art styles change and evolve and an artist will develop new styles and techniques as they grow, but lore olympus was literally a total degradation of skills viewed live. it was like rachel figured out how to kind of draw one guy and by god we were going to know it. the details that marked early lore episodes - gorgeous colour choices, composition, shading, soft details - ended up getting completely tossed aside in favour of the same two png cutouts pasted in various tiktok outfits over and over. it’s calarts if they had gotten a multi million dollar webtoon deal
SEEING MY GIRL MEG IN THE LATEST EPISODE OF @genericpuff'S LORE REKINDLED
dicaprio pointing meme THERE SHE IS!!!
kept meaning to make a post and kept FORGETTING to because i'm dumb but i cannot stop thinking of all the loose ends / introduced plots that got dropped without any warning and one that has been sticking out is persephone's "new" abilities after she "lost" her powers
we get a lackluster hint in episode 267, when apollo uses some random magic deus ex machina to "restore" persephone's powers. he starts bleeding from the nose and ears.
also apologies for the terrible quality, i forgot that lo went under daily pass and had to scour my own screenshots lmamdgjsf
it's not explained at the time whatsoever and in fact, the vagueness of the narrative kind of half-heartedly implies that it's an effect of ouranos' magic - it's also completely handwaved away, since no one bothers to ask why apollo is suddenly bleeding from the orifices and able to use persephone's powers.
it's not until persephone and hera decide to visit kronos in tartarus that persephone explains she somehow knew all along what this strange power was! she can apparently make a god rot from the inside!!!
it's not explained at ALL how she figured that out or like ... why she has that specific power. it is mentioned during the solstice where she creates winter that she can only make "decay," but that's a pretty obvious and visual thing - she's quite literally blistered the mortal realm in snow and ice, with all the plants dying on their physical surface.
important context, but other than persephone's attack on minthe, she is never seen using her powers on another person. her abilities are always on herself, or using plants / growth in some way. the fertility goddess nonsense does mean that hades and kronos are able to use her powers to strengthen themselves, but beyond that plot point being ridiculous, it's also something they don't just figure out overnight. kronos being able to escape control the underworld, and hades going godzilla mode during the trial, are clues used to eventually figure out what persephone's fertility goddess powers can do.
in regards to her new winter powers, persephone either figured it out somehow before the scene with apollo, or she figured it out after. with no explanation how.
moving from the how, we then get the last mention to this power, when persephone attempts to stop kronos
spoiler: it does not work. the power is never referenced again.
in terms of lore olympus' many crimes, it's a small thing, but it stands out to me as such a flailing attempt to write some wiggle room into the finale. rachel was struggling to get to the end, that much was obvious, and she was padding out the episodes as desperately as she could so that she could pull on any random thread and find a way to keep the plot moving. in better hands, this might have been a legitimately interesting power to explore for persephone! the goddess of spring, capable of rot, capable of such bone-deep destruction, and how she reconciles that with growth. it could have been a powerful juxtaposition, but it got abandoned as soon as rachel figured out how to give persephone her powers back. presumably, persephone still has this ability, but it is literally never brought up again. we have no idea if there was lasting damage to apollo, if it did anything in particular to kronos, what it can do to a god (the assumption is nothing, since both apollo and kronos seem just fine in their final scenes.)
it's just. amazing to go back and look through all the various strings rachel was knotting together, seeing stuff that might have been genuinely fascinating to explore in some other writer's hands! tiny little things like this, added up together to just be crapshoot after crapshoot. it's no surprise at all that rachel finished the last episode barely an hour before it went live. what a mess.
i’ve been doing Real World stuff for the past while so i haven’t been online as often but someone asked me today if i read lore olympus and im pretty sure i bluescreened in real life
woke in THE coldest sweat from a nightmare where i was being chased by hades from lore olympus. he wasn't even trying to hurt me or anything he just kept saying "can't we talk?" and i was running for the damn hills like my life depended on it.
Lore Olympus, the groundbreaking feminist comic that began with an old man thirsting over a barely legal teenager in a skimpy dress and ending with those two having a Christian wedding and becoming a nuclear family.
