Admittedly, Rukia kind of has a hard time with any animal that isn’t fuzzy and soft and a bunny. Snake are just. Not any of those things at all. Looking at the reptile lying on the boy’s chest was making her feel kind of clammy.

Rukia had to lean over his head to make direct eye contact, and as a result was forced to make peripheral eye-contact with the snake. You just. Stay there, you.”It’s a good name. It’s cute.”

It’s not really that scary up close, at least. “Is it okay for it to be lying on you like that? Aren’t you worried it’ll bite or something?”

He looks from her to the tiny, coiled up reptile who stared on endlessly with it’s unblinking abyssal stare. It made no movement other than it’s subtle breathing and the occasional flicker of a little pink tongue. “Naw. He woulda bit me by now if he wanted to-- I read tha’, snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them. They only strike out of defense because they think yer a big bird or somethin’-- Tha’s a snake fact! At least, fer little ones like these. He don’t gots no venom n I’m no’ a bird tha’ eats neighbors!” The snake finally moves, but only to turn it’s head to look at Reko’s hand as it gestured during the explanation, tongue flicking with every movement, deciding if it was a threat or not-- Right before lazily hiding its head underneath it’s own dark, yellow striped coils. “They like warm things-- hey! Wha’s yer favorite warm thing? I like melon bread”

Who else could he possibly be speaking to? The little guy that was now resting on his chest after realizing that this weird flesh rock that didn’t hurt it is very warm and an excellent basking rock. Good basking rock. Reko was not ready to disturb his new friend yet and instead looked at the other just by turning his head. “Ah! I’m talkin’ to Izzy! Izzy, Izzy. Tha’s a good name fer a snake, righ’? Do ya gots any names ya like? Hey, are you okay? You want to say hi? We’re neighbors.”

He’s found a garter snake while laying in the grass-- It’s about as long as his arm and rather docile, and completely content to slither through his hands as he puts them one before the other, endlessly. “Na, do ya live around here?” There’s a tongue flicker. “I ‘ope so, tha’ll make us neighbors!”

TALK abt Reko's relationship to the 3rd division

While it might not have been the best placement initially for Reko, it was in the end, what set all the wheels in motion. He wouldn’t be where he is right now with out the placement into the division of despair. He understands more than a lot of others his age might--- if just from experience, doesn’t matter how harsh. It also gave him what was once lost: a sense of family, and in the end, a true family. Even when he’s older, he’d probably prefer to stay an unseated officer in the third than move up in the ranks through other divisions. His loyalty is unwavering at very much foolish. He’ll even defend the integrity of third division even if... well, what they say is true. It’s a good and safe place to him, and now, always will be. Fun fact: Reko now wants to learn how to play an instrument due to Rose’s constant playing of his guitar.
