Listening to shikamaru explain what he liked about her made her heart feel like it was gonna burst out of her chest, everything felt so fuzzy. Never has she ever imagined this would be her reality, she felt like the luckiest girl.

He sat himself down. Getting himself a cup of tea and some dumplings. He had gotten a little peckish on the road. Taking a bite of his food. “Someone’s excited we’re stopping..usually i’m the one excited about that.” he teased.

She blushed sitting in front of him with a warm cup of jasmine tea and sweet rice cakes. “Well I suppose whatever chance I have to read just makes me excited.” She spoke softly pulling out her book, usually she over loads her brains with information from the books she decides to read however today she brought a romantic adventure book.

“I see. Hopefully you don’t read stuff like Kakashi Sensei does, at least, not in public anyways.” Of course. it was in a teasing tone. Everyone knew he read the make-out series in public, and it was quite awkward for everyone involved. But, the Nara paid no attention to the actual cover of the book she had in her hands.

She gazed up at him from her book, and with a smirk she said ever so shamelessly “don’t worry, I only read those books on my very special alone time.” The small kunoichi popped a piece of her rice cake in her mouth as if nothing.

She held her gaze so she can study his reaction, Shikamaru was easily the most handsome in the leaf, in her opinion, he was far more attractive and cooler than sasuke, and him being a genius only made her attraction stronger.

“Shikamaru,” She began “does ino still have a thing for sasuke or…” this was her way of sneakily seeing who he found attractive by bringing the topic up. It was an easy tatic. She asked him Bout ino, he answers, them she smoothly ask him if he has a crush. She was hoping she couldn’t hear how fast her heart was beating at the thought of his answer.

“Hhg!” He looked at her. Nearly choking on his tea. But then calmly collected himself. Oh that was a good comeback. Very clever. Very clever indeed. “Well I wasn’t expecting that sort of..bluntness. That’s for sure and Ino? I- I think she’s into that Sai guy. Or whatever. and Sasuke. “ He gave a shrug and went to eat a dumpling. He couldn’t really think of her real motive here. It was obvious she was up to something, and the redness on his face from her earlier comment left her a lot to work with. This was a drag. One he walked right into. He hadn’t expected her to be so..well equipped for comebacks.

Her team mates were little baffled by her way of being, it was rare for other people to bring this side out of her. It seemed only rei was only capable.

Arriving at their room the three were immediately taken back at how ravish it looked.

“Wow! This is …beautiful!” Said a very loud rei

She was, childish. Kankuro frowned and shook his head. Feeling less confidant towards the mission success. When Suna requested help, Kankuro had assumed they would send reliable, mature Shinobi’s. But maybe he was being overly critical of the woman. He had been rude to her. Even if her attitude was the cause of his prior behavior.

He resisted the flinch that crept up his spine when Rei spoke. Were they always so loud? Kankuro would  certainly find out it seemed. Glancing from Rei to Suki, he gave her a somewhat apologetic stare. Since she mentioned his stuck up attitude from before it had been bothering him with increasing severity. 

Kankuro stepped closer to her. “ It was nice officially meeting you Suki. “  He offered, his tone gentle if not a bit hoarse.

Big intense eyes glared up at him for a moment analyzing to see if he was being genuine or not, once the brown haired Shinobi passed her little test she extended a small hand for him to take “it’s a pleasure.” She corrected. Her parents were strict with her being that they were greatly respected within the village, in the “political world”, as she calls it. They made sure she always had the proper etiquette, that is whenever they had the time to teach it to her, she never spoke unless spoken too, always sat still, never was allowed to complain or cry, or show any emotion that was ‘improper’. So it was just the norm for her to act like she doesn’t care because that’s how she was raised, it’s a big flaw she struggles with but she just cannot help it or seem to escape this war-or emotionless prison.

“And yes, he’s always this obnoxious, that’s why I’m closer to ryuu .” She whispered returning a kind quick grin. She actually seemed like a person who has genuine emotions rather than a cold heartless robot.

 Suki rolled her eyes when he said her name, she tried her hardest to ignore him yet still listening to his words. She still has yet to forgive him from never properly introducing himself to her.

The rest of the team nodded, the twins vibes were a lot more serious now, understanding the importance of the mission. The twins, despite ryuu shyness, never liked being too serious which kept a balance with Suki’s constant serious facade. They made her laugh. 

“Ya know, I was hoping we would at least explore Suna just a little.” whispered Rei.

He resist every urge in his body to not roll his eyes at Suki’s continued behavior. It’s almost as if she wasn’t taking this mission as seriously as her comrades. Kankuro swallowed down his aggression however. Choosing to be civil despite the hot anger that bubbled beneath his surface. Even if he was generally a hot headed guy. He had enough training to control himself.

“ There’ll be time after the mission to do so. I’ll even show you three around myself if you do well.” He would stand by that. The sand village was a big large and he would hate to have to track down the leaf ninja if they got lost. “ Come on, We’ve set up a room for you three to stay in for the time being.” He turned and started towards the gates.

Suki made sure to walk close to Kankuro, she was gonna allow herself to be vocal this time. “You know, for someone who is quick to show us around you sure lack a proper greeting.” She crossed her arms over her chest and picked up the pace as fast as her little legs could Carry, walking now in front of Kankuro. She knew she was being childish but she couldn’t help herself. She despised improper people and still couldn’t let the grunge go.

His brow lifted, she still was upset over that? Hadn’t it been a year since that happened? “ Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you cared.” he stated, tone flat. “ You know, I don’t think leading the way is a good idea considering you don’t know where we’re going. ”

Kankuro picked up paced, passing the small woman up easily. He glanced over his shoulder at her, one brow cocked as he spoke. “ And It’s Kankuro. ” Was she happy now?

“Damn it” She thought to herself completely at a lost, did he just really figure her entire life out? Was she more obvious than what she thought, this entire time? 

“You know shikamaru, You’re so annoying!” She let out a heavy sign, hooking  strains of wavy black hair behind her ear. Her ears felt hot, and she knew her cheeks were most likely red she she made sure not to look up at him. “If everyone has a fear then whats yours?hm? Getting out of bed before noon I assume??”

“Then when the missions over I guess you’ll be happy you wont have to deal with me anymore. Huh?”  He looked over at her. Noting the tinge of red on her face. He chuckled at her figuring he would be afraid of getting out of bed. 

“Not even close. “ He put his hands behind his head and looked up at the clouds. “Failing my comrades. One could easily look out for themselves but if they don’t put their comrades first above all else. Then what’s the point.”

Her body loosen from being so tensed the more he talked, like every sentence soften her. It made him seem so human and caring, it surprised her.

“I see.” She said clearing her throat.

She pondered her own question, she had many fears but couldn’t decide which one felt the most terrifying to her.

“You know Shikamaru, you’re just a big softy.”

“Eh? A softie? Nah I just have morals.” He looked ahead. “Anyways we shouldn’t be too far from a place we can stop and rest. So, be on your toes. You never know when there could be an ambush. It might be a peaceful era. But, it’s always good to be sure.” A tiny blush was on his cheeks.

After a bit of walking they reached a small tea shop. “Finally! I was getting tired of walking.”
