nancy 'walk 'em down' wheeler. â a heavily headcanon based interpretation of nancy wheeler, the eldest daughter in every sense of the word. if it comes to protecting her family, and those she loves, she will always put herself in the line of fire. she loves quietly, always a shoulder to cry on â yet never admits to needing that person herself. ( nancy is unlabelled with a male lean & goes by she/her pronouns. )
these are my headcanons for my personal interpretation of nancy; that aren't in her canon portrayal. i will be updating it frequently.
trigger warning for mentions of mental health issues.
ONE. nancy & jonathan are exes. they broke up by the end of season 4 after realising they just didn't have romantic compatibility. they have a bond beyond friendship, though completely platonic. she cares very much for jonathan, just wanting the best for him.
TWO. due to ted's emotional unavailability, and karen stressing with raising the family; nancy has taken it upon herself to be the emotional pillar for mike and holly. she's the one who nurtures them and helps to raise them.
THREE. due to this pressure at such a young age, nancy does suffer with migraines. they can be somewhat debilitating, resulting in her often needing naps in the day to attempt to fight them off.
FOUR. after barb's death, nancy has found herself in a perpetual depressive state. her emotions get incredibly low. she's often rather sensitive and gets emotional incredibly easily. she has intense survivors guilt; and misses her friend heavily.
FIVE. despite knowing how to shoot a gun and using them often; she hates the sound of gunshots. she tries her best to hold in the panic from the loud noises. because of that, she flinches at loud noises in general.
SIX. in addition to survivors guilt surrounding barb's death, nancy also suffers with horrifying night terrors. they come in the form of barb disappearing or even watching her die after being shown her mangled corpse by vecna.
SEVEN. based off what natalia dyer said she had pitched to the duffer bros for nancy's career. nancy lost her job at the paper due to 'refusing a public service by not publishing an article warning people of anti-military propaganda' when really, the paper wanted to publish a smear campaign against robin and steve's radio show. and when she loses her job, she speaks with barb's parents who offer to help her start up her private investigator career. she wants to mainly help lower income families who's cases are always brushed over by police; because after seeing what both the hollands and the byers have gone through with the lack of support, she wants to be able to help them through it instead of it feeling like she's obligated to.

ooc talk real quick. but as a disabled writer with a chronic pain condition, please be patient when it comes to those with ongoing health issues. pushing boundaries and getting annoyed that people won't respond due to bad health is very disrespectful. i've been inactive today because my condition has been flaring up; but with my own past experiences, i have to state this explicitly.
this is a hobby. not a full time job. i, as well as many other writers, do this for fun. but if our health is bad, we have to take care of that. we can't be unwell and writing at the same time. you are not entitled to anyone's time either.
be patient. be understanding, and respect boundaries. we are real people behind these characters.

she blinks for a moment, before slowly pointing at her slightly bruised eye.
" cement, i tell you ... "
upon seeing the purple toned bruising around her eye, he softens and immediately jumps into action.
âwoah, hey ⊠you alright?â he isnât even thinking when he lifts a careful hand to trace over the swollen skin. âyou werenât kidding âŠâ
a slight wince at his touch, though tender, still was rather painful to her swollen eye. but she leaned into the touch regardless.
"i'm alright ... he was just like 'hey wheeler, catch' and then ... smack. but it's not like it's bleeding or falling out." she tries to shrug it off, and tries to make a joke of it. "i'd look pretty damn cool with an eyepatch, though."
giving a halfassed sorry smile, his hand drops, clearing his throat in an attempt to hide the gentleness heâd just put on display so vulnerably.
âhopefully you wonât ever need one, but, yeah. you could have a totally customized one, like a pastel pink that says âone-eyed wheeler.ââ he canât help the teasing in his tone.
a small smile rests on her features in return, moving to lean against a nearby wall and shoving her hands in her pockets. but as always, he always found a way to make her laugh. it was as if he had some sort of sixth sense to channel into how she felt.
"don't start saying that around mike or holly; i'll be having to deal with two weeks of sea shanties around my house." she quipped back.
âwhat, no pirateâs life for you?â his nose almost scrunches up with the mere thought of it, her younger siblings being absolute nuisances. over the previous few years, heâd learned rapidly what that feeling was like.
âalright, then you gotta promise not to shoot your eye out or something, like that kid from a christmas story.â
"nah, not for me. my mom, maybe. with the amount of wine she's been drinking."
ah yes, karen wheeler taking the 'wine mom' trope too seriously and quite literally getting through boxes of wine bottles a day. how lovely!
"ah, damn. ya caught me there, steve. guess my plans for the weekend are now out the window." her arms move up in an exasperated gesture, though clearly sarcastic.
steve cringes at that â both in sympathy for her, and at the remembrance of the last time heâd seen karen. god, has she changed. the impact it mustâve had on nancy certainly isnât lost on him.
âwell ⊠it just sounds like youâre in need of new, better plans now.â he starts, leaning up against the wall but giving her enough space, arms crossed over his chest.
it was a lot for nancy to see. her mother essentially deteriorating and becoming a better mother to a bottle than the three children that needed her the most. but all the more reason for nancy to step up for her siblings.
when he leaned against the wall, she turned her body to face him; big doe eyes landing on his and tilting her head a little bit.
"care to be those better plans and release me from my potential boredom dungeon...?"
bingo. precisely the answer steve had been looking for. though he tries his best to hide the eagerness akin to a golden retriever puppy, it shows when he perks up ever so slightly.
âyeah? you wanna hang out with little olâ me?â the banter comes so naturally to him, at least with nancy. sheâs always felt so easy to talk to, even with the not-so-savory history looming behind them.
âhow about this? we grab some shitty pizza, we load into the beemer, and we park somewhere totally inconspicuous to people watch as they sled down that shitty metal coverup and potentially wipe-out or get arrested.â
she had to fight a smile. she really had to fight off the goofy grin that threatened to attach to her lips when she saw him perk up like that. what was he doing to her?
"well ... you're one of the very few people here who i can tolerate. so of course i'd wanna hang out with you." she remarks before listening to his plan. it sounded like heaven. just sitting in the beamer. eating shitty takeout food. laughing at people's potential idiocy. it's like he knew her hobbies inside and out. so, she just responds with a single sentence.
"pick me up at six."

please know that i will not be interacting with people who will erase the identities of queer characters within this show. will is canonically gay. robin is canonically lesbian. to make them bisexual is to erase such an integral part of their character, and it is homophobic in it's intention.
