marieclairemag We’re hanging with the lovely @DiannaAgron ahead of the premiere for her new film ‘Zipper’ @birchbox #Sundance
When we caught up with Dianna Agron at Birchbox’s event at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, she told us all about her role in Zipper and it’s sure to make you forget all about her happy-go-lucky character in Glee. The actress decided to take on a totally new role, and it might just be her darkest and most mature part yet.
In Zipper, Dianna plays Dalia, an intern at the office of a lawyer who’s going to be running for office. To say the least, things get complicated. “He’s this respected kind of stand-up guy. What this movie is exploring is how good people can also do bad things, and what the stakes are and what the catalyst can be,” she says. “In this, my character is the catalyst—the intern who’s absolutely in love with him and they get together after an office party,. Rather than go down a road with me, he thinks he can get away with it. It’s really dark and goes in really dark places.”
Playing a role so different from the characters she’s played in the past has been a lot of fun for Dianna, especially since there’s so much creative freedom. “Getting out of the high school level is kind of nice—playing characters who are closer to my age,” she says. “Indie movies have a huge sense of freedom. There are shorter hours and you’re on a very limited budget, so you work really hard for 12 hours then do it all over again. It’s very focused and very streamlined and I think because you’re not answering to studios and executives, you have a bigger say in how the film goes. I love the no-thrills aspect about it. I don’t need a trailer and I don’t need everything to be glam. That’s what it’s about—I didn’t get into this to be pampered. I got into this to be a storyteller.”
Since Dianna filmed four films just last year (!!!), we can expect to see a lot more of this girl taking on the big-screen. But with being as busy as she is, she still makes sure to take time to keep up with her beauty regimen. Don’t worry, it’s easy to copy! “I drink a lot of water, and there are these new skincare products I’m obsessed with right now called iS Clinical. They’ve been really great for my skin,” she says. “I use moisturizer, then there are simple tricks, like I found out baby oil takes off all my eye makeup really quickly and it’s really gentle for your eyes. My main advice is be thorough and take your makeup off at night—things your mom tells you.”
When she’s actually not filming, you might find Dianna hanging with her musical bestie Sam Smith. “We became friends because I tweeted about his music when it first came out, and he tweeted me back and we started following each other and talking. We met after his LA show,” she says. “It was funny because he didn’t ask me to be in his music video for “I’m Not the Only One” himself—he had his people ask my people. He probably didn’t want to pressure me or anything, but of course I was very happy to do so. He’s just such a talent, but he’s so grounded and so lovely. He’s wonderful and I’m really happy he’s in my life.”
