Raquel knew that Dimitri was right, if there was any time that she would prefer to have this conversation, it’d be never. She’d be long gone and six feet under if she had anything to do with it. She didn’t budge when Dimitri came closer, knowing that he wouldn’t willingly do anything that she was uncomfortable with, which was what made this all so much more difficult. “What?” Raquel looked at the witch in shock, never having ever heard the man so willing to end his master’s life before. That was always what she never understood between Edgar and Dimitri– Dimitri had all of his power and he did nothing with it, even though Edgar treated him so poorly. “That’s not what I want, at all,” she said eventually with a furious shake of her head before she leveled her hazel eyes onto him, “I don’t want you killing anyone for me. If anything, you should be killing Edgar for yourself. If you kill him for me at my command, I’m no better than him and I don’t want that.” She felt like a cornered animal, desperate for an escape. She could lie to him just so they could be done and she wouldn’t be hassled anymore– but she’s not one to do that. Raquel knew she couldn’t look him in the eyes and lie, but this isn’t what she deserved either. “I’ll do what you ask, give you your answer, if you answer my question first,” she said after a time of considering her next steps. Their next steps, “why do I get to be happy and live when my own father and brother can no longer? You know why they died. So, why do I get to have the things they no longer can experience when they died because of me?”
In the moment, Dimitri wasn’t certain he could go through with killing his master, with killing anyone, although he accomplished such in the past. He held the power of the world at his fingertips as dark magic all but consumed the man, but Edgar saved his life and loyalty was a small price to pay where Dimitri stood. The years were growing monotonous, however, tedious and constricting. He fully accepted this is how the rest of his immortality would progress without love or true companionship, but Raquel sought an untenable invasion of his soul without easing the reins for a respite. “And what if it is what I want, sweet pea? To know I am capable of killing him for the both of us with no effort and take my freedom by force? You do what is necessary for the ones you love and that has not changed from the fabric of this godforsaken society since it’s been written.” Dimitri leveled his gaze with the huntress’, piqued by curiosity and contemplation over a question she must have asked herself on the daily. “I never knew your father or your brother, but you cannot possibly believe leading a miserable existence blaming their deaths on you is what they truly wanted. You may have already decided you’re dead at the start of this hellbent crusade, but I see the way your expression brightens when you’re among those you care about. Like that caravan...or me. That is not the spirit of a dead woman walking, it’s a Raquel fighting for happiness. You lose one trace of it and Luther has won the war.” Dimitri reached out, cupping Raquel’s face in his palms, “I’ve never met someone in my centuries who deserves every happiness more than you. You are a Ray of Sunshine, my Ray of Sunshine.”
