We are VERY lucky to grow year round in our parts - but every season brings new learning curves and new challenges. ________________ There hasn’t been much rain or chill hours this winter so a lot of my root and hearty crops such as sprouting broccoli and Brussels (purple tipped turnips ? Forget it!) haven’t matured as quickly as I’d hoped... and they might not at all. And here I am already preparing for summer. What?! ___________________ But that’s okay!! I think the best thing I’ve learned as a gardener is to pluck out those plants not serving you and make room for the new...while still continuing to support those strong roots who have been nourishing your heart and body. |SEASONS GREETINGS SO-CAL STYLE| We might not have snow (fingers crossed rain is in the forecast) but we are blessed to live in a place where the city is large but community feels small. We might not have sleet and pine...but we have is laurel bay that make fragrant wreaths, local farms that introduce us to new (grey kabocha!!) squash and a fuzzy happy feeling that urban life doesn’t usually transcribe in the description of our city limits. |COLOR THERAPY| added a few blooms to the garden this weekend while the flower beds transition from the last of spring into the bright pops of summer. Next year I’m tripling down on zinnias because I’ve never enjoyed growing a flower from seed more! I even caved and got a rose bush... Adobe Sunrise...the first rose to turn me into that person who wants to grow roses...and they smell like apricots 🤗 I hope you added a little color into your holiday break too (even if it was just a popsicle...which sounds like an excellent idea right now) 🧡 https://ift.tt/2NFRSqv

|OUT OF OFFICE| at last it’s time to rest and wait for the arrival of our little one any day now! Learning to slow down these past 9 months was a challenge for me but a valuable lesson of how to better take care of myself moving forward. Which may or may not still include a daily scoop of ice cream because, well...calcium 😜But seriously, little simple pleasures go a long way...even if it’s just a sparkling rose lemonade reward like this on a hot afternoon, just because. |HELLO SUMMER| why did it take me until this year to grow cut flowers!? Talk about a cheerful addition to the garden... which you’re forced to make weekly bouquets with because, well snipping blooms encourages more flowering for your plant. I’m pretty sure that’s the best deal ever! Strawflowers, zinnias, dahlias and poppies have been a highlight so far and I’m definitely going to expand my seed selections for next year. |HEADING INTO THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND LIKE| today I got a jump start on cleaning out garden beds for summer rotation and boy did I get rewarded for my work! I had some fennel that was out of control and underneath a lost treasure of candy cane beets... sometimes forgetting about things has its benefits! |PEAS FRESH OUT OF THE GARDEN, CERAMICS HOT OUT OF THE KILN| I started ceramic classes over two years ago with the thought of making my own props for photoshoots - what I didn’t realize is how exciting that creative process would become when adding my garden into the mix. To build from clay a serving dish specifically to showcase a plant I grew from soil. Seeing those two processes come together beautifully makes my heart sing...and so do these blistered peas over burrata with pesto and mixed herb blossoms...I’ll post a recipe of this spring favorite soon. |DEAR SPRING| you have won me over as my favorite season this year. I’ve always been an autumn kinda gal, but the garden has me appreciating these milder days filled with abundant harvests and the ability to still set foot into the greenhouse without melting into a nuclear zapped puddle. I’m into you, that’s all...now time to play with these artichokes. There are still so many more getting ready for the picking! |HAPPY EARTH DAY| so incredibly grateful for everything I’ve learned about growing and nurturing soil these past two years while building my garden. It’s all about paying close attention and taking the time to care...slowing down. A LOT. And for that I am thankful, not just today, but every day for that continuous reminder that it takes a lot of hard work and patience to see those rewards blossom 🙌🏻💛🌱 Even better? I just read a report that says 1 hour of gardening is just as good as cardio and aids in graceful aging of the mind - if that’s not a reason to get out your trowel, I don’t know what is!
