Golden State... returns
TERRACE HOUSE GOLDEN STATE - EPISODE 03 - Director’s Notes
“The feelings linger in the ends of your hair.” was a quote uttered by commentator YOU in the infamous Terrace House Boys & Girls in the City episode, Magic Spell Costco. It’s a very profound quote that has a deep meaning. In the episode, Mizuki cuts her hair because her relationship with Arman has dwindled to a little more than just friends. Arman has been distracted by the new girl however this will prove moot as the new girl will show a darker side in the coming episodes.
I’d like to think this quote applies to much more than this episodes but to the parody series as a whole that we’ve created. The idea for this stemmed from a silly thought over lunch to something that’s been a lot of fun to make.
Series End?
Why is this the last episode? Well... It’s not. While it’s hard work to make these episodes/movies, (There’s planning for the shoot, evaluating equipment based on scenes, planning craft services, scheduling not just the house scenes but the commentator scenes as well) it’s a lot of fun. Filmmaking brings everyone together and that’s why I love making this series. Once finished shooting, I edit all this footage alone, stacking layers and syncing audio; adding music and titles where appropriate. The last and final part is adding in English subtitles which can take up to 24 hours total. I want to make at least one more episode before we go out.
Breaking Down the Shots
GS is always a fun series to work on. The cast all knows each other at this point and things change based on real world events. We’re shooting a parody of a reality show while also taking real factors into accord. It’s really not a parody anymore but more of our own version. Everyone did a fantastic job.
A Huge Thank You
I’d just like to thank the cast and crew for making these projects a reality. You’re all seriously talented. It was a pleasure working on all of these episodes with you.

Cinematography of Shin Godzilla
Shin Godzilla ( シン・ゴジラ) also known as Godzilla: Resurgence in some parts, is the most recent live action Godzilla film from Toho Studios. Directed by acclaimed anime director and creator of the Evangelion series, Hideaki Anno; and co-directed by Shinji Higuchi, who’s work includes directing the two recent Attack on Titan live action films. The film was released on July 29th in Japan and on October 11h in select territories outside of Japan. A monster film and political drama, the film reboots Godzilla’s origin story as if the iconic monster were to re-appear in modern Japan. The plot follows the various government departments of Japan and their attempts to suppress the Godzilla attack, bringing to life a more realistic view of Godzilla. It’s more or less a commentary on the Japanese government and Fukishima disaster. A tribute to its rich history, the film features various music pieces, actor cameos and roars from previous films in the Godzilla franchise.
The film is unique in that it has what I will call “Anno-isms.” It features quickly edited scenes, special effects, rarely any long takes, and use of various camera angles. The cinematographer for this film is Kosuke Yamada. He uses a plethora of cameras to achieve different viewpoints to make Godzilla seem quite larger than life.Let’s take a look at a few scenes form the film below:
====================================
IF YOU HAVEN’T YET, CHECK OUT THIS FILM. SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
====================================
What Lies Below Tokyo Bay
The first scene in the film depicts the various human main characters and sub characters meeting to discuss what appears to be a volcanic eruption in Tokyo Bay near Haneda Airport. From here, we see a lot of close up angles of various government cabinet members. They discuss whether the eruption in Tokyo Bay is either natural or unnatural. From here, we cut to various angles of Tokyo Bay, long shots, close ups and extreme close ups as a tail emerges from the ocean. It’s here that we really get a scale of what is to come.
Godzilla’s Triumphant Return
The beginning of this scene depicts Godzilla returning to mainland Japan via Sagami Bay, Kamakura. The REAL Godzilla theme from Akira Ifukube starts playing and immediately we get a look at Godzilla in all his glory. The colors in this scene are a mix of blues and greens for conference room scenes and warmer yellows and oranges for the outdoor scenes featuring Godzilla. This scene features more of a focus on the human characters as they attempt to suppress Godzilla from advancing into Tokyo proper. The camera cuts between extreme close ups of humans and long shots of Godzilla. That’s what I love about the cinematography in this scene the most. It gives scale to Godzilla and shows just how immense he is standing at 118.5 meters tall.
Tokyo On Fire
Shortly after the previously mentioned scene, Godzilla is setting Tokyo ablaze with its new found atomic breath powers. It suddenly becomes dormant and frozen due to internal nuclear cooling. This scene features some beautiful night shots that are a blend of special effects and practical effects. Parts of Tokyo shown in this scene feature a digital version of Tokyo being destroyed. What I love about this scene are that the blacks are black and the blues are blues.

Review: DUNKIRK
*MILD SPOILERS AHEAD*
Christopher Nolan comes back to theaters with his new masterpiece, Dunkirk. The film features an ensemble cast, starring Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy. It is set in World War II during the harrowing evacuation of Dunkirk. The film follows three separate storylines: I. The Mole (on land covering one week), II. The Sea (at sea covering one day), III. The Air (in the air covering one hour).
Let me start off by saying I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I saw this film at my local theater which offered Century XD (the next best thing to IMAX), with quality surround sound and comfortable leather reclining seats. So I had some time to really piece this together. The acting was great, the use of visuals was great and the story was well thought out. Instead of going into the basics, I want to cover four things with my thoughts and opinions: Cinematography and the three parts, The Mole, The Sea and The Air. Let’s begin!
Cinematography
The film was shot on a combination of IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large format film stock in Panavision System 65, on IMAX cameras. Hoyte Van Hoytema once again is behind the camera for this film after having done previous work on Interstellar. The cameras and lenses used in this film were the first to be handheld, supervised by Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard. Filming took place in the UK, Netherlands, United States and the real beaches of Dunkirk, France. The color of the film used that weird war movie filter that can be seen in films like Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor and Letters from Iwo Jima. It uses a lot of blues, browns and blacks to give it a dark tone. Nolan and Van Hoytema probably spent weeks preparing to shoot this film. A big film preservationist, Nolan again shoots on film as previously mentioned. Nolan’s big on shooting on film and it definitely was the pinnacle of his work when it came to Dunkirk.
I. The Mole (one week)
Why it’s called the Mole is because I think there’s a certain character in the group that is out of place... if you’ve seen the film, that’s probably why this section is called that but for the most part, I am not sure. Regardless, this section of the film is where our story begins. We follow a soldier named Tommy. He rarely speaks and when he does, it doesn’t really move the plot forward. This section had good moments however it lacked depth. A lot of it were the characters slowly looking up at the sky as Luftwaffe planes picked them off. It was harrowing to see but these moments really played out well. The photo above really highlights the characters and their reactions as the story progressed.
II. The Sea (one day)
Taking place over the course of one day, this section covers one of the Little Ships of Dunkirk from their leaving the UK to their arrival at Dunkirk across the English Channel. The Royal Navy are commandeering private boats to ferry soldiers back from Dunkirk however the characters Mr. Dawson, his son Peter and their friend George, take the evacuation into their own hands and sail across the channel. Along the way, they encounter several characters from the other threads in the movie. I think this section is the more interesting parts of the movie. It blends both civilian and military types that push the story forward. It also gives perspective to the civilians who had to take part in the evacuation of Dunkirk as well as their morals, feelings and outcomes.
III. The Air (one hour)
Tom Hardy once again acts in one of Nolan’s films. He was the star of this section in the film. Flying Submarine Spitfires, three pilots head to Dunkirk to provide support for the waiting troops. Without spoiling too much, Tom Hardy takes down several planes and barely survives in the knick of time. There’s so much I want to say about this section but I can’t say it without spoiling it!
My Conclusion
This movie was incredible. It was big, it was loud and there were moments that just make you go in awe. It wasn’t the best Nolan film I’ve seen but it also wasn’t the best World War II film I’ve seen. If you are going to see this movie, see it in IMAX. It’s big, it’s loud and it’s masterfully shot.

The Sounds of Kansai
I went to Japan for the 4th time this past July. I love Japan. I love the culture, I love the people and I love the food. Japan is a very fascinating country, from a western perspective, for a lot of reasons. One of which is the sounds. Japan sounds nothing like San Francisco, especially in summer. I wanted to capture the sounds and culture of the Kansai area of Japan. The Kansai area of Japan included in this video is Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Koyasan. Kansai-ben is the dialect primarily spoken in this area of Japan.
As a follow up to my previous video, The Sounds of Tokyo, I wanted to make this a very special video from a very special trip. The video was shot on a Canon t3i with various lenses and edited on Premiere and colored in Lightroom (yes lightroom can color videos, surprisingly.)

VLOG: Goodbye, Ashlyn
I’ve always been interested in VLOGs and VLOG culture. The aspect if filming oneself seemed too much for me. I told myself, “If I were to ever vlog, I would never want to film my entire life.” It wasn’t until I found out about Steven Suptic and Sugar Pine 7 that I started to become more interested in making Vlogs. I actually created some in the past such as the one below here:
I think I’ll experiment and make more videos like that in the future.

Goodbye, Mash Up Studios
And hello Dinosaur Productions!
(Logo not final)
We are going through a re-branding process. After years of deep thought, I decided to retire the Mash Up Studios mantra and am bringing Dinosaur Productions to the forefront.
Why Dinosaur Productions?
I like dinosaurs. The first movie I ever saw was Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic, Jurassic Park. Not only that, my father used to run a production company called Dinosaur Productions when he was younger. I want to continue my father’s legacy and re-brand myself with Dinosaur Productions.
So look forward to more videos under the Dinosaur Productions name!

Letters (手紙) - Director’s Notes
When I first started out making movies, it was always a dream of mine to make films in another language. My father introduced me to samurai movies and jidaigeki (時代劇) style movies. It were the works of Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Rashomon) that inspired me to create films in the Japanese language at an early age. As I got older, I watched more animated based films such as Hayao Miyazaki’s Porco Rosso and Makoto Shinkai’s The Garden of Words. The latter was a huge inspiration for this film in all aspects of production.
The concept of Letters came about after I just ended a long distance relationship. I wanted the film to convey the message of a distant and dwindling relationship between a couple. I feel as though I put a lot of my personal life into the script of the film and it really shows.
Production on Letters started in 2015. Principal photography took place over two years. We encountered some production issues when the lead actress Chika, moved to Los Angeles for work. She would come back up a couple times and we would get some scenes in. We shot in San Francisco’s Japantown, Moraga Tiled Steps and Golden Gate Park. The actors Chika and Tohta, were very enthusiastic about the project and put their all into the voice acting which took around 1 hour to complete.
I blame myself for not being able to finish this project sooner. As time passed by, I found myself unmotivated to work on this project. The long production schedule and gaps between shooting really left me unmotivated. It wasn’t until late 2016 when my buddy Jairus pitched me the idea of scoring any future projects. I took Letters from the back burner and showed it to Jairus. He loved it and created a single for a quick trailer I put together. It was because of his enthusiasm that gave me second wind to finish the project.
Finishing the project was an even bigger challenge. After the project was put on a brief hiatus, I decided to make a hard decision. I had to cut the film down. This is the part that hurts the most. I wrote the script intending for at least a 30 minute run time. It was cut down to 6 minutes and any footage shot already became part of the final cut. Lines were re-arranged and dialogue stripped. This was a huge passion project of mine and I feel like I’m not doing myself justice by finishing the project early. It pains me to know that the full project won’t ever get realized.
On the flip side, I think the film portrays a portion of their lives perfectly. It feels like a complete narrative. I’m very happy with the outcome. Chika and Tohta’s voices shine and Jairus brings a melodic tune throughout. This project was a lot of fun to work on and definitely something I want to do again.
Thanks for watching my video and check out my other stuff on my channel!

TERRACE HOUSE GOLDEN STATE - EPISODE 01 - Director’s Notes
One Wednesday evening, I was having drinks with a couple friends in a San Francisco bar. We got to talking about shows on Netflix and we got to talking about this Japanese reality show called “Terrace House.” My friend described it as “boring but you will like it.” Not the best way to pitch a show but nonetheless, I was intrigued. I went home that night and pulled it up on Netflix.
I couldn’t stop watching it.
From that moment on, I wanted to keep watching it until the end. I couldn’t stop talking about it and I couldn’t wait for the second season. At the same time, I hated the show so much because my friend was right. It was boring, the characters were dumb and there really wasn’t a plot. But I kept coming back. I kept coming back to see what would happen next. I found myself attached to characters. After finishing all 40+ episodes on Netflix, I wanted more. Aloha State was announced but it wouldn’t come out to the US until the next year.
So then I had a brilliantly stupid idea. What if, just if, I made Terrace House with my friends? A parody of the show.
Lucky for me, my film friend Honoka also finished the show. So work began on pre-production of what would eventually become TERRACE HOUSE GOLDEN STATE. We wanted to make this parody as a way to not only bring our friends together but also as a fun way to poke at this show we both love and hate.
Fast forward to December 11th, 2016. We shot for 12 hours using 5 different cameras. It was a very long day but everyone did so well. I can’t thank the cast and crew enough for an amazing shoot. We all had a blast and we hope you enjoy what we created!

2016 as a Filmmaker
“Time is a precious thing, never waste it.” -Gene Wilder
This year was a challenging one. I got a new job, I traveled halfway across the world but I somehow had time to still make movies. I want to thank everyone who helped me along this journey and shoutouts to Henry, Natsuki with an especial shoutout to Honoka who helped me with a lot of the projects.
2016 wasn’t the best year in the world so let’s hope that 2017 is a better one

BUBBLE TEA - Short Film
A very long time ago, (specifically 6 years ago), my buddy Victor introduced me to the wonderful world of BOBA (milk tea)
So I made a short film about it. The film stars my buddies Takumi and Jake. They play two friends, one who doesn’t know about milk tea and one who doesn’t. Jake introduces Takumi to milk tea boba and from there his life is changed... sort of.
The reason I made this short is because I’m now trying to follow the model of “make something.” I just want to make crazy fun stuff with my friends and the only way to do it is just make anything. This marks the first in a series of short films revolving around random experiences in my life.
What is boba? What is milk tea? Is it the same thing? How does it make you feel? A short film about two boys who discover the magic of boba.

Meteorite Flow
I absolutely love m-flo. They got me into artists like Emyli, Ryohei, Yoshika, Bennie K, Rie fu and Emi Hinouchi. Because of them, I really got into Jpop and J-Hip Hop.
But who is m-flo? M-flo is a Japanese hip hop duo consisting of DJ Taku Takahashi and MC Verbal. They’re huge artists in the Japanese pop/hip hop scene. They used to be a trio but former member LISA left in 2002 to pursue a (unsuccessful) solo career. From 2003 to 2007, they collaborated with numerous artists to form the “m-flo loves” compilation of albums. It’s with these works that propelled them to super stardom.
Verbal on the left and Taku on the right
In the early days, they started out as hip hop artists similar to Black Eyed Peas but lately, they changed their branding and image to reflect a more electronic vibe. I absolutely love their electronic vibe. It’s definitely different from their previous works but they are masters of their craft.
2019 marks their 20th anniversary and I REALLY want to go to their concert. Their 10th anniversary concert was AMAZING and the DVD doesn’t do it justice. I sure hope that they are still together as a group when 2019 rolls around.

“Letters” - Production Notes 2
It’s been more than a year since I’ve had an update on this project. But I finally came through with a trailer.
To be honest, I haven’t had much inspiration when trying to finish this film, partly because the actress lives in LA now. It’s funny how I’m trying to make a film based in San Francisco however the actress I want to work with lives where other actresses live.
I finally put together a trailer with what little footage I have. This marks the first time I’ve worked on a project that has lasted more than a year and has been stuck in development hell.
I will say, the whole reason I became more interested in this project is because of my buddy Jairus. He’s a musician/composer on Youtube. Check out his channel here. One night while watching The Boy and the Beast, we had a conversation about Makoto Shinkai’s new film Your Name, we got to talking about the music for Shinkai’s films. Then, it donned on me. What if we worked together? So the next day, I asked if he could be the composer of my unfinished film and he immediately got to work on a piece for the trailer.
Please check out the trailer above and leave a comment/like. And please don’t forget to check out the very talented Jairus (OishiiMusic)

New Video: San Francisco Love Story - Opening
Tokyo Love Story is a 1991 Japanese romantic comedy drama.
When Kanchi (Oda Yuji) first came to Tokyo to work, he is full of uncertainties. He is 'lost' in his work and his love relationship is in a mess. During those times, Rika (Suzuki Honami), his colleague, always encourages and helps him. Though they fall for each other once, all this comes quick and ends fast. Rika is simply too 'energetic' and her love is simply too 'heavy' for Kanchi.
Drama Info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Love_Story
This drama had a huge impact on me when I first saw it. The music, the outfits, and the technology all drew me into 1990s Tokyo. In a way, I could relate with the characters as their lives were a strange reflection of mine. I got a new job in San Francisco. Oda Yuji’s character starts a new job in a big city and at the time, he was around my age. It was a great way to watch the drama, comparing his story to my own.
And now thus, San Francisco Love Story is born. It’s a parody on this drama’s opening sequence and a parody on 1990s opening sequences in general. I shot it with a Canon ZR800 that I got as a gift when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I’ve always had it and I’ve always wanted to shoot something on it. So I did the unthinkable. I bought an extended battery from Amazon (can’t believe they still sold it) and a couple of DV tapes from Walgreens (couldn’t believe they sold those there too!). I consider this a test of my camera and how it can handle longform projects. In the future, I hope to create a longer movie using the camera and tapes.
San Francisco Love Story Cast: Chika Ohata as Samejima Mamimi - 大畑チカ as サメジマ・マミ美 Kevin O’Donnell as Odawara Keisuke - ケヴィン・オドネル as 小田原敬介Miho Nishibashi as Kasami Fuu - 西橋 美帆 as 香澄フウ Yoshiko Mizoguchi as Mikumari Kirara - 斎藤ほのか as 御子守キララ Jake Oribello as Setagaya Yusuke - オリベロジェイク as 世田谷裕介 東京ラブストーリーに基づいて Based on 東京ラブストーリー ディレクター、編集者と撮影監督 - ジェレミー・サンティアゴ Director, Editor and Cinematographer - Jeremy Santiago
Thanks for watching! F.A.Q. -Why did you do this? Because I loved how 90s the opening sequence to Tokyo Love Story was. -What filter are you using? No filters! I filmed it using a Canon ZR800 Mini DV camcorder. I bought a “new” extended battery for my camcorder on Amazon and Mini dv tapes from Walgreens. -How long did filming take? Filming took approximately 4 months to complete. It was mostly me going around and filming stuff by myself on weekend or after work. The shots with people took weeks as schedules were hard to coordinate.
