Welcome! To a universe where the superpowers and unnatural talents of fiction have become reality!
In the 1950's, several people developed superpowers now called "Divine Talents" or simply talents. Their talents had them exiled from their communities, people were terrified of these strange abilities. So, those who had developed these talents grew a hunger for vengeance. They came back to their old communities and wreaked havoc, becoming the first villains. Luckily, the next people to develop talents were more accepted (though probably out of fear). They were raised to defend these communities from the first villains, and so they did. These became the world's first heroes.
Flash forward to the present day. There are enough heroes to fight off the villains most of the time, but not always. There are now guidelines in place for these talents. Everyone who wants to use their talents in common areas needs a special license with guidelines based on their particular talent and what they can use it for. Still, the percentage of the population with a divine talent is fairly low at 20-25%.
Our divinely talented friends meet each other in a hero training program, for one reason or another. All hero programs have a minimum starting age of 14. People can join later but tend to show up as early as possible.
